  • Illustrator - Place Image Size Demystified - Calculate Dimensions of a Placed File
When you place an image in an Adobe Illustrator file the size of the image depends on two factors - not only the physical pixel dimensions of the file! Yikes! In this video I explain how to place an image a Illustrator file two ways - one sized to your preferred dimensions and the other to the original image size. But - what really is the "original image size"? I'll explain what this is and how you can calculate it - or, at least, understand why it isn't what you might expect it to be.

Ah! what a relief, to understand the reason behind an issue and to know how to solve the issue!... Thanks so much for this video. This issue has eaten up half of my day, before i gave up and bumped into your channel.

I’m so glad that you found the channel and I’m so glad that you took the time to comment. It was a really interesting question and one that I’ve never encountered before so I didn’t realize it was a problem until you pointed it out. I think you’ve helped me create a great video. Thanks so much!

How interesting! I tried to replicate this problem in illustrator, but I am not seeing any difference between a placed jpg at 72dpi, and a placed jpg at 300 (both at 50x50cm, created in photoshop).
Both of them placed perfectly fine, and the dimensions read 50x50cm, and at the same size to each other. I used an image to test further, one at 300dpi, and the other downsized to 72dpi. Again, they placed equally in illustrator. How is it they we have different sets of behaviour going on, would you know?
    Great video btw!

Good question! I think you are misunderstanding things here - the calculations discussed in this video are based on the number of pixels wide and tall and the resolution and using these you can determine the size the image will be when placed in Illustrator.
You are using the width and height in cm (not pixels) and the resolution and that's a totally different situation - your results are consistent because you are calculating based on cm units and not pixel units. If you check out your documents at 72 dpi and 300 dpi both at 50 cm x 50 cm you will find their actual pixel sizes (width in pixels and height in pixels) are very different - that's the issue here.
