Wonderful! A great video of one of the worlds greatest trumpet players, who brought the piccolo trumpet to the forefront! This great master has influenced so many fine trumpet players! Thank you Maestro Andre!!! Rest in peace.

I played the first one on my pic. Same as our master, Selmer Paris 4 valve. Absolutely love the pitch, tone. I will never forget Maurice Andre 👍🏻

Oh, man, listening to the master so close is awesome! I had this opportunity in 1982, in S. Paulo, Brazil, when he played Bellini, Hummel and at the end, almost 20 minutes of encore... The next day, a Saturday morning, he gave us (some 200 trumpet players from everywhere) an unforgettable masterclass. Thank you very much for this stupendous video!

Years ago I heard the flautist James Galway reminiscing on BBC Radio 3 about his time as principal flute of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra . Galway recalled how the orchestra and Karajan were booked for a commercial recording session with a trumpet soloist. (it was Maurice Andre) Galway had no idea who he was and turned up with the rest of the band for the session. Galway said he watched while a young man strolled in front of the orchestra and - here's the thing - without any form of warmup began the session.

A l'heure actuelle quel trompettiste peut-il jouer avec une tel qualité quand on sait la difficulté d'enregistrer avec une prise de son à 1 ou 2 mètres. Et en plus dans une salle très sèche. Hubert.

Hilarious there’s like 8 people in that awful room with what must be a flat dead acoustic and a wretched pianist. And it sounds sublime.

That was an excellent performance. I haven't seen a lot of him in live concert, usually it's through recordings, so it was great to hear him get around some technical material no problem. He may not be the best technician, but he adds colour to what he plays, which appeals to me.

What takes Maurice above everyone else is his ability make magic when he plays the trumpet. Everything he does is so much music. It's crazy. But I have to give Miles Hendon right. Maurice was not the best technical trumpet player. I mean, he was crazy good in all aspects, but not the best. There is many of today trumpeters that (technically) can play these concerts better than Maurice, but once again, Maurice stands alone in the way he make magic when he plays...

I just want to make clear that I think Maurice is fantastic, both technically and musically. But if I'm really peaky, you could hear that not every attack is perfect and that his sound is not as warm as many others. When he goes up in the register, he sometimes loses the sound. It sounds harsh, but when I listen to many other trumpeters, everything sounds so much easier.
If you want names that I think is greater techincally: Håkan Hardenberger (!!) Ole Edvard Antonsen. Philip Smith. Jeroen Berwaerts. If you listen to some of Håkan Hardenberger's concertos (especially the end of Martinsson Trumpet Concerto) I think you understand what I mean. Or listen to Håkan's Henze Sonata recording here on youtube.
However, this recording of Maurice is indeed perfect. But compare Maurice's recording of for example Jolivet Trumpet Concerto with Ole Edvard Antonsen's recording.

This is the standard respond when someone discuss Maurice Andre. If you read my comment properly, you can see that I see Maurice Andre as #1. He is the best, and will always be. However, I still don't think he is the best technician, and as I'm a musician myself, playing trumpet, I can tell most of the professional trumpeters I have spoken with, agree with me. Everyone sees Maurice as #1, but he is not the best technician.
It's not about throwing shit at Maurice. It's about analyzing and compare with other great great trumpeters. I don't know why fanboys like you think that Maurice is the god that is flawless in every way. He has his flaws, just like any other musician at this planet.
If you think Maurice is the best in every way, I urge you to be more objective and start listen at other soloist, and I think you would recognize flaws - even at Maurice. I mean, my teacher was a student to Maurice for some time and he asked him "why do you practice when you can do everything" and Maurice answered: "My wanted level just increases as I practice, because I recognize more and more things that can be better".

When I hear others I don't think they are better because he seems really born to play the trumpet. I wish anybody could tell why he had an advantage. He believed himself he practised more than the others but nevertheless he couldn't learn his technique to his son, so something is going on. It's like his lips are for him like vocal folds. His embouchure doesn't move much like all work is done inside the mouth. The disadvantage of his own technique could be that he is not so superb on the normal trumpet and I have the impression his static embouchure means he is less good in modern etudes with very wide perfectly legato intervals. His legato is a little bit "aided" with the tongue but that way it's secure of course.
