Throne of Glass is definitely at the top of my list. I can't stand it. And you're totally right about certain fandoms just being awful. One thing that really annoys me is when someone says, "Oh, don't quit 'series x'! It's so good once you get to book 4!" I shouldn't have to read four books into a series for it to get good. That's ridiculous. There are WAY too many amazing stories out there to waste my time with something I hate.
Desiree McLaughlin throne of glass is one of my fav book series so far. I love the story, I love the characters and I don’t understand how people can hate this series
I wasn't that impressed with captive prince, but motivated enough to continue, and I've heard good things about the rest of the series. BUT then I read the second book. Damn. That book is one of my favorite books ever. Best slow burn romance that I've ever read. I don't want to bore you with it, but reconsider continuing it in the future. I see that you don't want to be involved in drama around it, and I understand. I'm not on booktube twitter, so i don't give a f about arguments surrounding this series. Just wanted to tell you that the first book is not a good representative how amazing the rest of it is.
I've heard that over and over, which is why I originally started the series. The major feud surrounding it from both sides is so exhausting though. I think I will read it at some point... once it doesn't make me tired just to think about lol
I get you 100%! You are a booktuber, a book reviewer and I read books very casually. I'm passionate about reading but I don't get involved in discussions. Sooo maybe try continuing when you are well rested from the book dramas? :))) maybe one day, no need to rush.
These 'negative' videos are my favourites tbh. I'm a jaded bitch so I need someone to drag a book every so often to nourish my soul. 'Throne of Glass' is officially the worst book I have ever had the displeasure of reading. Whenever somebody says it's good I'm just like..👀 Oh, and my hometown's mayor feels personally victimised by this video so I hope you feel good about yourself!
FINALLY!!! I hated Throne of Glass so much, I went LOOKING for bad reviews to see if anybody else felt the same, and I kept seeing everyone rave over it. I legit didn't get it, like wtf
I can't even successfully start that damned book. I've tried. I've tried the audiobook, I've tried the ebook (because I'm not particularly keen on the idea of purchasing a physical version of it), and no luck. Just can't get into it.
I honestly don't understand how someone can get mad about other people's opinions, I actually love hearing other opinions, especially if I don't agree with them!😆
Thankyou for warning me about The Bronze Horseman! It's such a long ass book that I don't wanna waste any time with if it's trash. Haha I love that by the time you got to Captive Prince you were just already dead inside
LilyCReads I would recommend trying it if it looks interesting to you. Personally it’s one of my all time favorites. Everyone has different reading tastes so don’t not read something just because someone else didn’t enjoy it.
Throne of Glass 🙌🙌🙌 Never have I cared less about a Main Character before. Her "assassin" character development is one of the biggest let downs for me in a good while.
Michael Young OMG yes I hated à main character so much, and the "mise en place" of the love triangle was so ridiculous, théy were all so plain, so immature.. This book gave me a headache..
Michael Young OMG yes I hated à main character so much, and the "mise en place" of the love triangle was so ridiculous, théy were all so plain, so immature.. This book gave me a headache..
Thoughts on Tomes I read the second book...you're not missing much. Actually, I honestly can't remember most of it. Very little interest in the third book
I wish I never started Throne of Glass honestly. I absolutely ADORED and was OBSESSED with books 1 - 3 and then 4 and 5 just absolutely BUTCHERED everything about it I loved. Could NOT have been more upset and angry at the writing of a series than I am with this one. I'm like "What in the ACTUAL FECK?!"
Liz Marie Gonzalez Caraballo OMG THE. WORST. I read it and got nauseated. I love you to death Sarah J Maas but we do NOT care to read your sexual fantasies since you clearly wrote those scenes for yourself.
Series I'm not finishing: - Fifty Shades of Grey - The Inheritance Cycle - To all the boys I've loved before - A Darker Shade of Magic - Rebel Belle - Not your Sidekick
I get what you mean about the nostalgia aspect of people loving the PJO series, but if I take away the nostalgia, there are actually a lot of elements that I liked in the first series better. I really liked how some of the stories really modeled famous Greek mythology works, like Sea of Monsters and The Odyssey parallel a lot. I also liked the characters in the first series better in the next one, because I feel like some of them get too much power. Romance also isn't a huge focus of the first series, which I personally really liked.
RANDOM27ify trueeeee. I've read the first trials of Apollo book, and it's actually really good. But I'm torn between, this is good keep em coming, or stop looking for money and write something different.
archerymaster8 lol I just felt like it was a little forced all I was saying I mean np with charecters being gay I just dont like when its shoe horned in. also how can peoole STILL ship percyXnico?
Whoa, that was a long one. Your sustained energy throughout was captivating. Must have been good to vent. I'm torn about continuing The Worldbreaker Saga. Ugh.
I loved three dark crowns but agree with the love triangle thing. Made me so angry and it felt so unnecessary took away so much from the original plot of the book. Hoping the next one doesnt have the same issue
The love triangle sucks. I read the second book which I really liked but I don't remember whether the love triangle was that bad in the second book. There is another love triangle that develops in the 2nd book but it's in too intense. I'm so tired of love triangles
Huh I didn't realize Captive Prince was a controversial book. I read the series recently and really really enjoyed it. Maybe because I've just been reading a lot of m/m erotica lately and this is clearly a step above most of that. It was so much more put together and thought out, so that it reminded me of the more high fantasy stuff I read a lot of as a child. I thought the politics were really realistic in this, and for the most part none of the characters suffered from being stupid as a brick of cheese. Do recommend.
For me, the rape in the first book was just too much. I can't read something like that, especially when the one who encourages the rape, gets together with the victim in the end. I actually felt so bad about it that I couldn't sleep after reading the first book😩
I'm not finishing Red Queen either. The second book was terrible in my opinion. These are a few unpopular opinions but I'm also not continuing Falling Kingdoms or This Savage Song. The last book I real in Falling Kingdoms was number 3 and I did really enjoy it but I'm not continuing because I genuinely only care about one character. There are other fantasies out there with better characters and a better world in general that I can give my time to. And as far as This Savage Song goes, I really enjoyed that one as well!! I loved the world, I really really really loved the characters and the concept was so good and I actually do WANT to read the second book. But it's one of those cases where if I read it? GREAT! If I don't? Oh well 😕
Ya I read the first one and it was all right and then I jumped into the 2nd one and it was again all right so I think I’m going to lose steam and probably not finish it! I bought war storm and it is so huge so I’ll probably not read it
I hated the first book in the captive prince series but I decided to read the second one and I'm really enjoying it, it's definitely taken me by surprise
100% agree! The first book made me a little uncomfortable so I ended up skimming some sections! But I LOVED the second book! Going to start the third soon!
Thank you - I needed this video. I have so many books on my shelves that I bought because of hype and now I just do not care or I really hated the first book in the series. Life is too short. I'd rather be reading things I am super excited about.
Some of the ones you said, I totally agree with. I'd add The Mortal Instruments series/Cassandra Clare. I saw nothing good in the first book and cringe every time someone praises it.
Honestly I love the Throne of Glass series but I can totally see why people don't like it! I'll never understand why people get mad when someone's opinion is different that your own!
Outlander! Like why do people like this. It's long. It's boring. It's unhealthy relationships. I read I think 300 pages in the first book and NOTHING happened. Ugh. I do not get it's immense popularity. It's not any different than any other historical romance, other than it's ten million pages longer than it needs to be. Lol
well, about percy jackson I did read when I was 16 but I read again now with 22. While I did have a problem now with the first book (lots of weird things happening) I found myself completely forgetting what my problems were as I went along with the series and found the excitement again? But I do understand what you say about nostalgia, I did read a couple series recently that everybody loves and found that it was really problematic and just awful so it definitely must be nostalgia!
I was washing my dishes, watching your latest video (finishing finished series) and apparently my autoplay was turned on and this video started. I just continued watching because, why not, I love watching you and I haven't watched old videos. I'm pretty much commenting to say: you are so savage here and I freaking love it😂😂😂
I've started Percy Jackson when I was 19 without ever reading it in my childhood. But I only started really liking it after the ending if the 3rd book. Before it was just okay. So I get your struggle with the first ones, especially considering that you hated the narrator. Those people can spoil a book for you.( Still, I think you should give the 3rd book a try, cause for the Heroes of Olympus, well, for understanding the characters, it's essential. Cause Heroes of Olympus is soooo worth it! All the other stuff I totally understand even though I don't have the same feelings about some of them. ;3
Your gripe of The Bronze Horseman is one of my all-time favorite booktube videos. We read the book at the same time and I also HATED that book. I knew it would be on here!
Ugh. I'm trying so hard to get through the Throne of Glass series because everyone loves it. But I'm like 3 out of 6 books in...and the writing is still so bad. Can't get over it.
I would like to know your opinion about the captive prince series personally cuz I really like the points you make and truly enjoy your discussions. As a person that enjoyed the series I just wanna know. Like I don’t even care if you’ll hate it or love it but like just what you think about it.
I agree with Throne of Glass. It had so much potential, and I hate how (spoiler) SJM just threw an ACOMAF at the end of the fifth book. Although I will be reading the last installment but ONLY because of Manon Blackbeak ❤
x_guela haha lol same but I'm in it for Dorian, Manon, Lysandra and Aedion THATS IT every other character has been destroyed and ruined cough Celaena cough also even though I was never really into Chaol I saw he had potential and UGHHHHH
The way you feel about Percy Jackson is the way I feel about Harry Potter haha!! I started PJO when I was a junior in high school and still really love the books. But I've tried a million times to read HP and I think a lot of why people like that one is nostalgia as well. I think both of those series suffer from that :) I love videos like this! Edit: ALSO don't worry about not finishing Delirium. You're not missing anything.
captive prince (the first book) doesn't exist to me lol although i'm really grateful i pushed through to finish that crap because the last two books are. so. good. probably my most favorite series right now!!!! i think!!!!! the growth and development are all done so well ;_____;
Salty booktubers is what i need in my life. All of them are generally so postive and like all the books they read, like how is that even possible? Thank you so much for this, my dark soul needed this 💜💜💜
you explained the darkest minds perfectly?? How it feels slow, walking through mud, sorta writing? Legit thought i was imagining it, but you validate the point
"Sit back, relax, enjoy..." You got my attention :D Can I just leave two yes-es for Percy Jackson, it was a struggle to get into the first book at my age!
I am very curious about books or series that you think were very good reads, but are almost never discussed on booktube. :) because some of the books you mentioned in this video are the kind of books that almost every booktuber has read, so yeah, popular ones. I am always curious about books that youtubers might think are not so known and read but are great reads. anyway, very nice video, now I don't feel so bad about not wanting to read books that are so hyped. :)
I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your videos! It always makes me so happy to watch them. And you inspire me to be more reflective over my reads! I love the "unpopular" opinions so much! Lots of love from Sweden
Meredith Glenn I go back and forth on this. I've read the first 4 and own book 5 and I've been following this story online since the fictionpress days but I'm so blah about book 5 I still haven't read it and then when the Chaol novella became an entire novel... 😝
Never understand why so many people take this as a negative video! I LOVE this type of video, especially as you did it where you give a real explanation on why you don't want to continue! If i am thinking about starting a series -and i am one of those people if i start i HAVE to finish it!- i love watching people telling my why they didn't enjoy that series, because that gives me the other side of the book. Most reviews are so overly positive, so talking about why you don't want to continue? so much better for deciding if it is worth giving a try or not! Great video! :)
LIVING for this video. Honestly, I love how sassy you get in these 'negative' videos. Also, I felt the exact same about Percy Jackson, I'm 16, and I definitely think the reason people like it so much is nostalgia. I mean, it was okay, but... yeah.
I also agree with you about not caring about Aelin gala-something, but at the same time I still have two books left and even though I don't like the main character there a many side ones that I do like (NOT Rowan) and I feel like they make the struggle that is our female protagonist worth it.
I am 1:02 into this video and I'm certain that I need to subscribe and watch everything you've posted so far. I absolutely love your "non-disclaimer" and will now watch the entire video.
My first video of yours, and I'm loving it! I totally respect your perspective and taste in books. Also, we readers need to hear things like," I refuse to make myself read//finish a book/series I dislike, bc I don't hate myself." LOLOL YESSSS!
I completely agree about the love triangle in Three Dark Crowns. Why is it necessary? It just distracts completely from the actual story and the only reason for it I feel was to make Mirabella more serious about the competition? Could've done without the weird drama.
OMG thank you!!! thank you for mentioning throne of glass! the only reason i got the whole series is because of the looks that the hardcovers had. seriously the only purpose those books have is to look good on my shelf... i was expecting something like a song of ice and fire but instead i got the hunger games in a fantasy world. such a shame
I definitely reccomend trying reading the Percy Jackson books. I don't know about the audio books, I tend not to listen to audiobooks cause they're so slow and I don't like that every character has the same voice except with usually a bad acting job on it. So I've no idea what the narrator is like. But I read the series as an adult, and I loved the whole thing. Percy is one of the funniest characters to be in his head. Fair enough dismiss it if you've given it a try, but it sounds like you're dismissing it because you didn't like the narrator of the audiobook - which really has no bearing on the books themselves. If you actually read them and found them uninteresting or annoying I'd understand they're not you're thing. But they're definitely not good just cause of nostalgia. I'd never heard of them till the newest series was well on it's way to being complete, and while Percy might be technically 12 in the first book, he felt 16 to me, and in the later series when they're supposed to be 16/17, they feel like 20 year olds. I dunno, just think they're worth a try, especially since you've not read any of them. (And Nico Di Angelo is the best character ever)
Ironic about Rat Queens. I loved the first volume, liked the second, and HAAATED the third. Now that I know about one of the creators, super glad I stopped reading. Also, yes, this video is awesome :) If I had to pick a series I won't finish, it would be the Opposites Attract series by Erin Nicholas. It's a contemporary romance trilogy about three nerdy friends who have their own love stories. I have never hated a book that I DNFed in so long. It was honest to god shit. I listened to it on audiobook.I hated the narrator and how she pronounced names. I hated the characters. The hero was an asshat who loathed a WOW type game, didn't like anything nerdy, and has a tragic past. The heroine LITERALLY WORKS FOR AND HELPED CREATE SAID GAME AND DECIDES TO NOT TELL THE HERO EVEN THOUGH SHE SPECIFICALLY SAID SHE WAS NEVER GOING TO HIDE WHO SHE WAS AND WHAT SHE LIKED. SHE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO TELL HIM WITH THE GUY'S NERDY SISTER BY HER SIDE, AND CHOSE NOT TO SAY ANYTHING, THEREFORE SETTING UP THE "MISUNDERSTANDING" OF THE BOOK. I am so sorry, but I still feel unadulterated rage towards this book. I needed to all caps rage about it. The second book just came out, and I have no desire whatsoever to listen to it, despite the fact that it seems a scotch better. Nope.
I also had a hard time with the first book of PJ, but now, it's my fav series. Heroes of Olympus is way better than Percy, but many people from the fandom didn't like it 'cause Percy wasn't the main character. Still. it's so good. However, I'm having trouble with The Kane Chronicles, a bit slow... Hope you get through it :D I'm actually gonna start the second book of Firebird this week LOL
Angelica Lopez I love the Percy Jackson series but this whole "Percy has to lead everything he's the best ever" mentality is really frustrating for me. I feel like Heroes of Olympus had some fantastic characters that got neglected because of everyone's obsession with Percy (like Hazel and Frank)
I agree. I was never the biggest fan of Percy and Annabeth (I didn't hate it at all I just wasn't neither loving or hating them) my favorite characters in Percy was Tyson and Grover. In Heroes of Olympus I just love Leo so much and that's why HoO is my favorite series of the 2. I also like that the characters are more grown up, and it's just refreshing with multiple POVs when it's done well.
I have never resented reading a book as much as Throne of Glass what a piece of junk. It hurt me having wasted time on it. Also be aware of book hypes especially during BEA a lot of them aren't that good. I bought too many that I have regretted never again.
BEA is smack dab in the middle of the advertising season for the fall and man do publishers pump a ton of money in to that marketing. I agree, a lot are flops. But I've also found a few gems in there. Last years releases were particularly bad though.
Not going to lie, but this week I donated the Throne of Glass and ACOTAR series. I'm done with the messy drama associated with it. I'm just tired of series and I feel I would be happy with other fantasy series.
I agree with you, there are so many books out there that I want to read that some times I just do not want to continues with a certain series , unless I really like it.
I totally get what your saying for many of these books, especially Percy Jackson. I just couldn't appreciate it as an adult - it's one of those series that really is nostalgia for a lot of people so think.
I tried reading it for the first time as an adult, and I couldn't get past the first few chapters. Reading a middle-school boy's voice in the first person was just not fun!
I read the Percy Jackson series when I was about 11 and I loved it but I completely understand that you don't because everyone is their own person. I happened to have just recently finished the Captive Prince series and I am still in Captive Prince hell. I am in love with it, I don't have a twitter so I never knew about the twitter wars till now and I agree that if you don't at least read the first one you really shouldn't diss a book on the themes you don't like just don't read it.
I tried to read Throne of Glass - but I ended up stopping because it was confusing. After that, there were a few things I was spoiled on, and I've heard that the series goes downhill. So, not planning to read it. I AM reading ACOTAR though. One book I hated was The 5th Wave! I didn't like anything about it - the characters were flat, the writing was confusing and there was ONE trope that I absolutely hated all throughout the first and second book! I read the second out of a sense of duty, and I am SO glad the third one wasn't out at the time. I really, really don't like it. I can understand why you don't like The School for Good and Evil - it IS Middle Grade, and I personally LOVE the series, but I was also 12 when I read it, so I was in-between Middle Grade and YA. I hope you finish it, but I totally get why you wouldn't.
OMG thank you! Everyone is obsessed with the Red Queen series and I'm like 'Really...? Are we just all pretending this is good??' it's such a blatant rip-off of so many other things. So many.
I am not finishing The Remnant Chronicles. I enjoyed the first book well enough but halfway through the second I stopped caring. I felt connected to the characters and liked them in the first book. The second book I suddenly realized the only character I would miss if they died was Gwyneth. When I realized I wasn't having fun reading I put it down for good.
I love that you don’t care what people think!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I love that you’re not afraid to say how you actually feel no matter what the popular opinion is!
I am definitely not finishing The Folk Of The Air trilogy. I just did not like the way it was written at all! And I hated almost all of the characters, I found them very one dimensional and some plotlines were just completely nonsensical. I was kinda disappointed by the first book and I don't care about the world enough to finish the series.
I recommend finishing the snow like ashes trilogy. I know the second one wasn't that good but the last book is great, it was my favourite in the series.
This reminds me that we were talking about this IN PERSON this past weekend wtf. I miss you already. Red Queen: yes. I didn't like it enough to wait for the next one. Throne of Glass: yes. You know. The Glittering Court: 10 pages. I made it 10 pages. Wait was that another Mead book? IDK. Not gonna do it. School of Good and Evil: I feel you. I liked the first book a fair amount but when I think, "when do I want to pick up the next one?" there's only static in my head. The Chaos Walking Trilogy: *cries* It's so good and it gets better. I HATE YOU HOW CAN YOU DISLIKE THINGS I LIKE WAAAAAAAAAH. Percy Jackson: We can be friends again because I agree with you again. I read the first one and I mean... I don't really care to keep going. Nostalgia is 100% it. To All the Boys: I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE MEH'D IT. SO MEH. Fairyland: That's it. We're over again. Delirium: Just kidding, we can be friends. I quit this after the second book. RAGE quit it. Captive Prince: Couldn't make it past the first a bazillion rape scenes so no.
I know what you mean about Blood Red Road, me and my friend read it together we both loved it, however my friend read the second book before me and she said it was horrible she hated it.
I love this video and your disclaimer, haha! I agree with a lot of your points. I won't finish the Divergent trilogy. I enjoyed the first book, but later felt like (a) it has some plot contradictions and (b) I don't like the romance. The romance feels extremely quick and unnatural to me, and, more importantly, it feels inappropriate in the context. Teacher-student relationships are something I don't feel good about. Since Four's in a position of authority and can affect Tris's career path, I find it strange for them to have a romance. Major conflict of interest. I also won't finish the Selection series by Kiera Cass. I enjoyed the first three books for the most part, but not the last few chapters of book 3. In fact, book 3 contained one of my favorite moments in YA lit so far (huge compliments to Kiera Cass for that), but immediately after that I felt like the plot started going downhill. And the end is the most Deus-y Deus ex machina that ever ex machina'd. In other words, she made some random stuff happen to solve the main character's problems instead of the main character figuring them out herself. I was disappointed by that. I'm sort of surprised the editor approved it, since Deus ex machina is widely viewed as lazy writing. Even if I'd liked the end, I might not have wanted to read books 4 and 5, because I just felt like 3 was enough.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who gave up on "Throne of Glass" - and who also didn't give tuppence for the main character. That series goes on my list of one of the biggest letdowns in literary history, because it had so much potential and the world building I very much enjoyed. But the characters - I couldn't do the characters and I didn't like where the story went with them.
I'm the same with Throne of Glass; I really don't enjoy reading from Celaena/Aelin's perspective and I'm just always like "ok but when is Manon's POV coming back". And honestly, I actually liked the series until I got to Empire of Storms which was just...a complete mess
I also don't plan on finishing Throne of Glass. I've got some friends who love it and some friends who also lost interest like me, and I just don't want to deal with all of the tumblr discussions and hate. I'll just leave it be. I don't really know if there are any other series I won't finish, because I haven't actually started that many, but I think for now I'll read a bunch of stand alones and be done with those before I embark on any new series. (And also I'm in a very big slump because if school required reading, so that's not helping) I really hope you don't get any unnecessary hate for this video, you did a great job staying neutral on most of the series.
I really think you should continue with the Captive Prince series, Sam. I understand why you don't want to, but I think it's worth it. I remember I got an ARC of the first one when it came out and I didn't even finish it. I absolutely hated it because of all the themes in it. Then a few years later when all three books had come out I started hearing all this hype about it and how great it was from people I trusted so I picked it up again and finished the entire series in like two days. After finishing it, I love this series. It's really strange because I understand why so many people hate it and think it's problematic but it's mostly people who haven't read it. I find it really difficult to explain why it's so good but I really think you should read it. I think it's amazing, and I'm usually extremely critical towards anything and everything lol. And you're so right, salty videos are the best. You have so much salt about problematic books *cough* SJM *cough* on your channel, it's why you're my favorite booktuber! There are hardly any booktubers who dislike SJM and that's maddening. The TOG series wasn't great in the beginning, I honestly only think the third book is good, the others are either just boring or complete and utter garbage. And it just keeps getting worse jfc. Anyway, just wanted to share my opinions! I won't hate you if you don't read the CP series lol, I completely understand. Just wanted to possibly convince you to read it so you don't miss out haha!
See that's exactly why I wanted to read the series, but I just don't want to deal with the bullshit that goes along with reading the series at this point lol
I felt pretty similar about Three Dark Crowns, but I also felt like the book was more prequelish/build up for the next one, so I'm pretty excited to finish the series in hopes it's better.
Lol about Percy Jackson. I agree that a lot of the hype and love surrounding those series is due to nostalgia. I read them when I was 12 and LOVED them, but have no desire to reread them now. Especially after I've read Heroes of Olympus and The Kane Chronicles. Riordan's writing just feels too young for me now, even though I know that a lot of young adults like them and whatnot. You probably won't like Hades and Persephone in PJO either (I don't think). Also! The audiobooks are TERRIBLE. The HoO narrator is just as bad. *shivers*
Love how blunt you are about these! I feel like there are some books that I just hear so many people talk about loving so I put them on my TBR even though I wouldn't pick it up on my own and Ill probably honestly never get to them because there are so many that I am more interested in reading! But who knows, maybe I'll find my all time favorite book this way. I just finished the School for Good and Evil trilogy on audio and they were good, cute books but I wouldn't say world-changing by any means. The audiobooks are pretty good though. And I feel you on Captive Prince. I haven't started the series but I don't think I ever will just because I feel like I'll be wrong either way and I just don't want to deal with it.
"Why would I do that to myself? I don't hate myself." Best statement ever when it comes to anything, but specifically reading terrible/unenjoyable or potentially terrible/unenjoyable books. Also, Dumpster Fire Of A Book is the greatest thing I have ever heard in my entire life. I adore you. You are magical.
Our tastes are so similar! A lot of these series would be on my list if I were to create one. Good luck with Runaways when you give it a shot! I personally couldn't stand that series because of all of the angst. But if you go into knowing its full of angst, you may have better luck than I did :)
Mine is definately Fallen Kingdoms series. I read the first two because of how much you loved them and I liked them but I didn't care enough to pick up any of the other ones. I skimmed book 3 for the Magnus and Cleo scenes and now I just watch your Fallen Kingdom spoiler videos and I'm glad I didn't continue on. Also, off topic but I LOVE your aesthetic dark lipstick looks phenomenal on you!!
I really liked the first 3 books in ToG. But after those it just got kinda...boring? I feel like high fantasy is the last genre that I should ever think is boring but it's a whole book of "blah" with one or two chapters of "woooo!"
SUCH a good video! I haven't read all the books you mentioned, but I completely agreed with you on the ones I had read. I have recently come to terms with the fact that I do not have enough time to read all the books I want to, which means that there's a good chance I won't to get to read all the books on my TBR list. The questionable satisfaction I would receive by finishing a series does not outweigh the time commitment and other factors. And like you said, I just don't care about certain series, they don't interest me, so why should I read them? My time is too valuable to waste on mediocre or bad books, so that means a lot of books must be left. Also, isn't it interesting how we can look back at our old ratings and reevaluate our opinions? I, too, will sometimes look at my review of a book and think that I was a little too generous, although I don't give out many 5 star ratings. It makes me wonder why my opinion has changed - have I changed my preferences in some way? or have I just forgotten a lot of the details in the book? I have been more purposefully careful with my 5 star ratings over time, so I do think I've gotten pickier about my books. Anyway, I applaud your attitude, love your videos!!
I wont be finishing The Mara Dyer's trilogy, i didint know what was all the hype back then, and i still dont know if i finish The dorothy must die series, the two books where ok but not that great
The Book Walker I really liked the first book in the Mara Dyer series...and I thought the second was pretty good too. But then there was so much time between me reading the second and the third coming out that I knew I'd have to re-read at least the second book to remind me of where the story was...so I put it off. Then I started hearing the third was awful...and now I just don't want to finish at all.
I read the entire Mara Dyer trilogy and for me, book 1 was "this wasn't great, but I'm intrigued", book 2 was "well this wasn't good but maybe the last book will give me the answers I'm seeking" and book 3 was "what did I just read? who allowed this garbage to be published"? So you're not missing out on anything.
I mostly agree with you on Percy Jackson with two exceptions, the First book for nostalgia, but i read the rest when i was much much older, and almost all the other books are "okay" EXCEPT for the the very last one! The last one just took such a fucking awesome turn and i was actually super invested in the stuff that was happening, more than any of the other books in the series.
It kinda does, they're so short it didnt really matter to me and i finished the series because someone bought me the box set as a present so i felt the need to finish, and im SO happy i left the series with a good feeling!
I hated the second book in the To All the Boys I Loved Before trilogy. The first chapter could have been at the end of the first book and the rest of it was pointless. I'm definitely not wasting my time with the third book. It would have made more sense to have one book for each of the sisters.
Chelsea Kerns I can understand your detest for P.S I Still Love You. But I did like it a bit. I had some issues with it though such as the lack of Josh and the introduction of McClaren. It kind of dragged the story too far. Your idea of each sister getting a book is quite interesting as I'm still reading the third book for satisfaction.
I fully agree with you on The Glittering Court being very gimmicky. I think I enjoyed it enough (I think I rated it 3 stars), but I had some issues with the overall plot. I also really didn't care for the girl we followed. I'm willing to check out books 2 and 3 - because I liked the characters they are about more. But, I didn't enjoy TGC nearly as much as I thought I would. I tried Throne of Glass years ago (and recently bought the whole series in hardcover for 10 dollars), but I didn't really get through the first book. I've been told the series gets better and than gets bad and then gets a bit better. I think, with Throne of Glass, it might be a case of "this series is too long and the author is running out of ideas/not defending ideas they already have well." (I think the series is planned to be at least eight novels. I also have the the first two novels in A Court of Thrones and Roses series, which is by the same author. I feel like I might enjoy that a bit more, as I am a fan of retellings. I'll have to wait and see. I wanted to read Percy Jackson, but I could never finish the first page. I've worked with some 7th and 8th graders who loved the series, but I wasn't in to it at all. I think it's an age issue - I'm just way too old for it and I was an adult when the first book came out, so there is no "warm memories from childhood" aspect to those novels for me. I don't plan of finishing the Shatter Me series. I just lost interest.
People talking about their unpopular opinions and what they didn't like feel so good to watch because they're such an assertion of individuality. For me, it's not about the Shade, but about the freedom to say "no", "I don't like it" and "you can't make me and not everybody has to be like you and like what you like".
The description made me snicker. I will inform you that my second cousins daughter's friend's dog feels positively bullied about this video.
Loved the "it's not about you" disclaimer 😂
I hate that it had to be said lol
Throne of Glass is definitely at the top of my list. I can't stand it. And you're totally right about certain fandoms just being awful. One thing that really annoys me is when someone says, "Oh, don't quit 'series x'! It's so good once you get to book 4!"
I shouldn't have to read four books into a series for it to get good. That's ridiculous. There are WAY too many amazing stories out there to waste my time with something I hate.
YESSS! It's bad enough when I have to wait over 200 pages to really get into a book, let alone multiple books! That's ridiculous.
Desiree McLaughlin I hate celeana too! She's awful!
Desiree McLaughlin throne of glass is one of my fav book series so far. I love the story, I love the characters and I don’t understand how people can hate this series
Desiree McLaughlin honestly yeah like throne of glass literally doesn’t get good until the last two books which is so sad, and annoying
Whenever somebody says it's good I'm just like..👀
Oh, and my hometown's mayor feels personally victimised by this video so I hope you feel good about yourself!
I actually get years added on to my lifespan whenever someone drags a book without shame so I feel you on this.
I do the same look with ACOTAR lol.
FINALLY!!! I hated Throne of Glass so much, I went LOOKING for bad reviews to see if anybody else felt the same, and I kept seeing everyone rave over it. I legit didn't get it, like wtf
Same. I need someone to feed the negativity. I'm glad Sam isn't too Disney Happy with her vids.
I can't even successfully start that damned book. I've tried. I've tried the audiobook, I've tried the ebook (because I'm not particularly keen on the idea of purchasing a physical version of it), and no luck. Just can't get into it.
I honestly don't understand how someone can get mad about other people's opinions, I actually love hearing other opinions, especially if I don't agree with them!😆
I'm the same way :)
Same tbh
Honestly the way I got into booktube was by watching a bunch of "popular books I hated" videos and subscribing to those I liked
i think i did the same, now that you mention it...
I love Throne of Glass but holy hell the SJM fandom is too much. They take extra to another level sometimes.
seriously yes
Agree, I got so many hate for saying I don't like it
Thankyou for warning me about The Bronze Horseman! It's such a long ass book that I don't wanna waste any time with if it's trash.
Haha I love that by the time you got to Captive Prince you were just already dead inside
I really was lol
LilyCReads I would recommend trying it if it looks interesting to you. Personally it’s one of my all time favorites. Everyone has different reading tastes so don’t not read something just because someone else didn’t enjoy it.
Throne of Glass 🙌🙌🙌 Never have I cared less about a Main Character before. Her "assassin" character development is one of the biggest let downs for me in a good while.
YES! Omg... an assassin that doesn't kill people or when she does it is off the page.......groundbreaking.
Thoughts on Tomes on an unrelated note would you please tell me how your bookshelves are organized?
Michael Young OMG yes I hated à main character so much, and the "mise en place" of the love triangle was so ridiculous, théy were all so plain, so immature.. This book gave me a headache..
Michael Young OMG yes I hated à main character so much, and the "mise en place" of the love triangle was so ridiculous, théy were all so plain, so immature.. This book gave me a headache..
Michael Young yes I hate celeana too!!
oh yeah red queen is literally the most basic thing ever
part of me wants to see how the next book is but then I'm like why would you do that to yourself.
Thoughts on Tomes I read the second book...you're not missing much. Actually, I honestly can't remember most of it. Very little interest in the third book
Linda H Book two was SO BAD so not do that to yourself Sam
honestly that series just confused me like the first book was SO HARD to follow and it was so freaking bland
Linda H I really liked the first book in the red queen series but book two was shit and book three was (if possible) even worse
You're right... I search for these types of videos.
everyone does lol
No not everyone
I wish I never started Throne of Glass honestly. I absolutely ADORED and was OBSESSED with books 1 - 3 and then 4 and 5 just absolutely BUTCHERED everything about it I loved. Could NOT have been more upset and angry at the writing of a series than I am with this one. I'm like "What in the ACTUAL FECK?!"
Mallorey Rogers I would never stop being salty about Rowan "wrapped velvet steel" territorial bullshit.
Liz Marie Gonzalez Caraballo OMG THE. WORST. I read it and got nauseated. I love you to death Sarah J Maas but we do NOT care to read your sexual fantasies since you clearly wrote those scenes for yourself.
Same! I was so in love with the first three books... I'm onto the fourth book now and I hate everything about this...
"Don't be mad, bro," was the best video ending I could ever hope for.
:)))
Series I'm not finishing:
- Fifty Shades of Grey
- The Inheritance Cycle
- To all the boys I've loved before
- A Darker Shade of Magic
- Rebel Belle
- Not your Sidekick
I get what you mean about the nostalgia aspect of people loving the PJO series, but if I take away the nostalgia, there are actually a lot of elements that I liked in the first series better. I really liked how some of the stories really modeled famous Greek mythology works, like Sea of Monsters and The Odyssey parallel a lot. I also liked the characters in the first series better in the next one, because I feel like some of them get too much power. Romance also isn't a huge focus of the first series, which I personally really liked.
And the ending to the PJO series was really fantastic, in my opinion. It's one of my favorite endings of all time, actually.
The original series was wonderful!
Im kinda making my way through the new seriessss
But at this point.
Riordan just needs to stop.
RANDOM27ify trueeeee. I've read the first trials of Apollo book, and it's actually really good. But I'm torn between, this is good keep em coming, or stop looking for money and write something different.
archerymaster8 so kinda off but on topic
Did you also feel like there was no need for Nico to be gay?
archerymaster8 lol I just felt like it was a little forced all I was saying
I mean np with charecters being gay I just dont like when its shoe horned in.
also how can peoole STILL ship percyXnico?
Whoa, that was a long one. Your sustained energy throughout was captivating. Must have been good to vent. I'm torn about continuing The Worldbreaker Saga. Ugh.
lol thank you :) Yeah this was both exhausting and cathartic lol
I'm an recent fan of the Captive Prince trilogy and I Fell Head Over Heels In Love With It! ^.^
not a rant to you just to people that make drama over the sex scenes and stuff from capri
GREAT! If I don't? Oh well 😕
That happens so often with me and series. I never really make a conscious decision to stop reading it but I lose interest between books.
Ya I read the first one and it was all right and then I jumped into the 2nd one and it was again all right so I think I’m going to lose steam and probably not finish it! I bought war storm and it is so huge so I’ll probably not read it
I may be totally weird, but I actually love when someone hates a book I love, it's like debate, it's great.
I hated the first book in the captive prince series but I decided to read the second one and I'm really enjoying it, it's definitely taken me by surprise
so many people have said the same things.
Exactly! There are too many good books out there to push your way through a series you aren't even enjoying.
I absolutely adore captive prince but I do agree it is a series you have to finish to judge.
Some series I don't plan on finishing are: Outlander, Red Queen, Truthwitch (much to my disappointment I didn't like the first book) and Caraval.
I also didn't like Truthwitch! I was so disappointed as everyone said I'd love it :(
2 minutes in and I'm already subscribed and currently on a marathon of all your previous vids. Really love what you're doing on this channel!
Thank you!
Those people can spoil a book for you.(
Still, I think you should give the 3rd book a try, cause for the Heroes of Olympus, well, for understanding the characters, it's essential. Cause Heroes of Olympus is soooo worth it!
All the other stuff I totally understand even though I don't have the same feelings about some of them. ;3
I literally only continued for Manon too, I freaken love her and then she didn’t even get the ending she deservedddd
UGH HOW DARE
I've heard that Beautiful Disaster is just terrible...
yeah..... it's not good lol
Jay G I did not like it, it was really boring
Jay G it's trash that promotes unhealthy relationships
I am reading this book right now, and it is so aggravating!!!!
Your gripe of The Bronze Horseman is one of my all-time favorite booktube videos. We read the book at the same time and I also HATED that book. I knew it would be on here!
Making that video added years back onto my life that The Bronze Horseman stole from me.
I heard the ending is basically the same as ACOMAF and I giggled.
x_guela haha lol same but I'm in it for Dorian, Manon, Lysandra and Aedion THATS IT every other character has been destroyed and ruined cough Celaena cough also even though I was never really into Chaol I saw he had potential and UGHHHHH
Sidney Horne and the Manon-Dorian ship! 😍❤
I know this is an older video but your makeup looks amazing and another question.. how is the Kiss Of Deception?
The way you feel about Percy Jackson is the way I feel about Harry Potter haha!! I started PJO when I was a junior in high school and still really love the books. But I've tried a million times to read HP and I think a lot of why people like that one is nostalgia as well. I think both of those series suffer from that :) I love videos like this! Edit: ALSO don't worry about not finishing Delirium. You're not missing anything.
captive prince (the first book) doesn't exist to me lol although i'm really grateful i pushed through to finish that crap because the last two books are. so. good. probably my most favorite series right now!!!! i think!!!!! the growth and development are all done so well ;_____;
*kicks up my feet* Bring it, girl, I live for this.
:)
Salty booktubers is what i need in my life. All of them are generally so postive and like all the books they read, like how is that even possible? Thank you so much for this, my dark soul needed this 💜💜💜
thank you :))))
you explained the darkest minds perfectly?? How it feels slow, walking through mud, sorta writing? Legit thought i was imagining it, but you validate the point
"Sit back, relax, enjoy..." You got my attention :D
Can I just leave two yes-es for Percy Jackson, it was a struggle to get into the first book at my age!
:)))))
I didn’t enjoy the Red Queen series either, I almost stopped reading the Cruel Prince but than I read book two and wow I liked it so much
I am very curious about books or series that you think were very good reads, but are almost never discussed on booktube. :)
I've actually done a video pretty recently on underrated books for Top 5 Wednesday!
Thoughts on Tomes awesome, I will check it out!
I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your videos! It always makes me so happy to watch them. And you inspire me to be more reflective over my reads! I love the "unpopular" opinions so much! Lots of love from Sweden
thank you!
Can I just say how much I love your PSA in the description box? 😂
I'm finishing ToG just because I've read the first 5 and I might as well finish since I've come this far...but I don't think you'll be missing much
Meredith Glenn I go back and forth on this. I've read the first 4 and own book 5 and I've been following this story online since the fictionpress days but I'm so blah about book 5 I still haven't read it and then when the Chaol novella became an entire novel... 😝
:))))
lol yea i got a good chuckle out of that too.
Ah, Percy Jackson. The story that tore my friendship group apart and left a trail of tears and pain in it's wake. We were 9 at the time.
I'm so glad it was helpful for you!
Honestly love the Darkest Minds but it also took me longer to get through than it typically would. I don't know why but I get what you mean.
For some reason this video makes me think of Kimberly Clark's makeup antihauls😁 "what I'm not gonna rea-ead!!"
OMG I LOVE HER
Thoughts on Tomes your level of snark in this video matches hers...I love her too👏🏼
DioneN yesss I love her, she has saved me quite a few $$$ "No you don't need it, not gonna buy it"
I am 1:02 into this video and I'm certain that I need to subscribe and watch everything you've posted so far. I absolutely love your "non-disclaimer" and will now watch the entire video.
thank you :)
Yes! It was so misplaced.
I think I've watched this video in entirety 3 times. Love the sass.
Thank you :)
Also, yes, this video is awesome :)
If I had to pick a series I won't finish, it would be the Opposites Attract series by Erin Nicholas.
Hope you get through it :D
I'm actually gonna start the second book of Firebird this week LOL
I think I'm going to like HoO much better if I can just get to it!
I'm sure you will, and you will eat up HoO. I read the whole series in two weeks XD
Angelica Lopez I love the Percy Jackson series but this whole "Percy has to lead everything he's the best ever" mentality is really frustrating for me. I feel like Heroes of Olympus had some fantastic characters that got neglected because of everyone's obsession with Percy (like Hazel and Frank)
archerymaster8 I know! I do like Percy and all, but the other characters are great too. I really love them! Specially, Leo
There's so much engagement on this video... did I miss something? You're right, we love this shit.
I know! It makes me happy :)
Wizardace i hated thzt book i gave itvaway so fast.
Not going to lie, but this week I donated the Throne of Glass and ACOTAR series. I'm done with the messy drama associated with it. I'm just tired of series and I feel I would be happy with other fantasy series.
This video was filled to the brim with absolute goodness......I freaking love this!
:))))
thank you for this!
And honestly, I actually liked the series until I got to Empire of Storms which was just...a complete mess
please continue the school of good and evil series, the second book is way much better than first one, please
I legit just found my new favorite booktuber because YOU ARE SO REAL AND FUNNY
thank you :)
(And also I'm in a very big slump because if school required reading, so that's not helping)
I really hope you don't get any unnecessary hate for this video, you did a great job staying neutral on most of the series.
hell yea! Helene is the best character in the Ember series. love her!
Lol yeah I get that
I felt pretty similar about Three Dark Crowns, but I also felt like the book was more prequelish/build up for the next one, so I'm pretty excited to finish the series in hopes it's better.
:)))
I need more of these videos in my life! I live for your book roasts!!!!
:)
I liked them too. But then it all went downhill and the potential I thought it might have had got squandered :(
SUCH a good video!
I wont be finishing The Mara Dyer's trilogy, i didint know what was all the hype back then, and i still dont know if i finish The dorothy must die series, the two books where ok but not that great
The Book Walker Those are the top two series I won't be finishing either.
Those are two I haven't read but I've heard sooooo many mixed to bad things about.
Aww. I loved Ember in the Ashes and am working through the second now. When you get the chance, you should give it another shot. :)
It sucks that it takes that long to get to the really good stuff though :(
It kinda does, they're so short it didnt really matter to me and i finished the series because someone bought me the box set as a present so i felt the need to finish, and im SO happy i left the series with a good feeling!
