    I'm not an English speaker, so i don't understand everything about the lyrics, but since i was a kid for me this song talks about my uncle: he spent his life on the road, driving trucks through Italy-France and England. He din't build a family himself, always traveling for work, all he had was us, his nephews. He always brought us presents from his travels. Today i recognize he was a dangerous solitary man, but he has been great.

    Here's a reply folks,
    From someone who was there when this was born from Bob Seger...one considers that Seger would have been greatly impressed with Metallica's cover and rightly so for Metallica has always been a great group of guys that truly honor and feel their music to the highest degree. Example: "The Unforgiven", "Enter Sandman", "One", "For Whom The Bell Tolls", etc, etc... one realizes when he is hearing greatness on multiple levels.
    Enjoy the evening,
    Vaelin

    “Remembering what she said...” brings lots of emotions. My mother died from brain cancer in 2007 and this reminds me of her on her death bed, telling me to do great things in life before she dies, and I felt like such a loser for years since I did not achieve anything when she was alive.
    But I’ve matured and grown a lot since then. I know that my family would be proud of me if they were alive now.

    First song I listened to when I got home from Bootcamp. It's such a lonely song and I LOVE it. I needed it. Being around 60+ guys yelling at each other every second of every day for 3 months, getting fucked up every day no matter how hard you try to be perfect. I needed a moment of isolation from everyone, to get to know myself as an individual again. Popped my headphones in, sat in the winter cold outside dark by myself and lit a cigarette to this song on full blast. Best moment ever. Damn what a feeling.

      +Haley Carlock I agree I like Seger's version better but that might be because I saw the epically bad video Metallica did for their version. Why they decided to make a video suggesting the song was about a stripper/hooker when it is plain that it is about Seger's experiences as a touring rocker is beyond me. Listening to it without their stupid video makes their version a little better but I like the bluesy strain to Seger's better.

    I adore both versions of this song. It's the same story, told by two different voices and perspectives. Bob Seger (original) told the story from the perspective of a man broken down and completly destroyed by his experiences. James tells it like a man who is suffering with his experiences, but instead gets angry about it, and uses his anger to keep himself going. Amazing work from both men.

    That solo at the end just makes you want to cry, like when you listen to any of the songs that were remade by a band that was better the second time. JC, hurt; Brad Paisley, Harlan(coalminer's blues); Hallelujah, no matter how many people remake it... it's best. Oldies never really get old.

    I grew up listening to Seger and hearing this song covered is interesting. The slide guitar in place of the saxophone adds a new flavor to the song. James' voice fits the song pretty well, a lot better than expected. And the fact that they tuned down a half step gives it an interested nuance

    This cover is way better than the original. James gave his all vocal power to this song. The guitar solo in the middle is unique and totally James' creation. It's very rare and brave to add a such a melodic solo to a cover song.

      @Unflushablepiss 9 лет назад

      musasm "This cover is way better than the original." it may be ur opinion so i wont flame you too much, but in what retarded universe do you reside in to say this is WAY better than the original? you need to stop listening to Michael Bolton as your perception of sound is totally messed up.

    • @NoneShallDefyMe

      This is better than the original by miles, it actually feels like this is the intended version while Bob's is a cover. Guess what? Just because you're the original artist doesn't mean someone can't come along and blow your song out of the fucking water. It's about the lifestyle of being a goddamn Rockstar and Bob sings it like a damn old hooch past his prime. It's actually rock and roll now.
      Deal with it.
