Real Families: Diving Deep into the World of Autism in Make Me Normal

  • What is it like not to understand the world you live in? What happens when the simplest daily tasks lead to anxiety, frustration and even violence?
Make Me Normal is a film about another world: the autistic world. Autism is a condition of the mind that affects the way you communicate with the world around you. In Britain, over half a million people have autism. There is no cure.
In the film, four of the most able students at Spa School in London take us on a moving journey into their world, to show us what it is like to grow up with autism. Filmed over several months, with unique access to one of Britain’s largest state schools for children with autism, Make Me Normal follows these students as they learn to live with their condition.
Moneer (12) has a form of autism called Asperger’s Syndrome. When he loses his mother to cancer, the school’s struggle to help him deal with his feelings and to manage his violent behaviour, is on a knife-edge. Roxanne (12) just wants to be a normal teenager but her realisation that autism is for life is extremely painful. Roy (18) is desperately trying to make sense of the world during his last year at school, but what he really wants is a girlfriend. And Esther (18), our guide, has a special gift for explaining the autistic world.

I am 22 years old, soon to be 23, with highly functioning autism.
I want to let people know it is possible in some way to live independently.
It takes a lot of work, energy and dedication and I applaud everyone with autism and PARENTS with autism.
    We're all fighters.

Hey you beautiful people! Just want to say thank you for all the love you're showing Moneer in the comments, he grew up and became me! If you have any questions feel free to ask, I am also in contact with Roxanne too. Love all of you, seriously. The world is a lot more understanding now, it still has miles to go, but we're getting there. keep being amazing! I became an actor in the end, who would of thought? (But I will play an astronaut one day lol). Love you all x

Omg! This film is helping me cope so much! My 3 yr old daughter was diagnosed moderate to severe autistic last month. At the moment she is non verbal, still in diapers, can’t feed herself, no eye contact, etc. Seeing these teenagers gives me so much hope for my daughters future! Each kid shown on here has their own story, own personality, own interests and as a parent that’s beautiful to see, the ups the downs all of it! Im so excited for my daughter and the future now. Thank you so much for this documentary! Roy was awesome! Total cutie! These kids do have emotions and do understand things but at their own pace and in their own way! Above all though they are trying and that’s what we’re all really doing when it comes down to it! I feel we as a society owe it to these precious children to educate all people about autism and about understanding! I totally Hated when they said or inferred these children in the film don’t feel for others and don’t form lasting bonds with people, etc. it’s just not true and each of these kids proved it quite convincingly for me at least!

The boy with aspergers (don’t remember his name). I know exactly how he feels. I’ve been there myself. What’s really worrying me is how the adults treat him. The want good but they are making it SOOOOO much worse. It’s making so many big scars. What they’re doing wrong is forcing him, getting very mad at him. Don’t do that. Cooperate with him instead of making teams and attacking him! I actually feel scared when ppl get angry at me. Just even saying no to me is terrifying! I didn’t realize it util I admitted it to myself. (Btw some of them also has ticks)

I know everyone is different but there are so many positives that come with autism too. Yes I have seizures, autistic meltdowns and selective mutism when I have sensory overload but I am also above average intelligence, have a special interest in psychology which is going to help with my future career of being the therapist I never had and I’m also really good at puzzles and seeing life in a different way

I know the school means well, but this is not the way to help. I have aspergers myself, so that’s why i’m saying this. I’m older now, and i’m on med’s. And i’m actually doing very good recently because the school i got to started listening to me and tried to help me in the way that i think is best for me. It’s working very well for me. A part of it is doing it in my tempo, ni forcing, no saying don’t, and treating me like a normal person. Cuz we are. That’s at least what we feel. When i was in a "special school"... it was terrible. It was like i was a show, someone who hasn’t developed, i was the focus at all time. I was probably smarter than those specialists🙄 it’s a joke, but i’m stupid. Treat them like normal adults, and don’t force them to do anything. It has consequences, but forcing them just makes it worse and leaves a scar. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

I don't care for the title "Make Me Normal" although I know what it is to struggle with that word; with that world of "Normal". Needing and wanting to fit in with a Nerotypical brain or society so badly. But as someone with autism my biggest break though came from realizing that I'm not "normal" and even though being so might make things easier for me... I don't want to be normal simply because it's not who I am. I don't want my autism taken from me!

    • @raea3588

Well, since everyone with autism is different no one will ever know everything about autism. That is true. Everything I know about autism I learned from myself or friends who have it and what helps me/them. Sometimes it can help others to share this info but I hope I don't come across as a know-it-all because what helps me might not help someone else who is on the spectrum. I think what helps people the most no matter who they are in life is to be accepted for who they are :) Thanks for the reply and have a happy week!

Oh wow. I haven't even thought about my son dating. I just get sad because his identical twin isn't autistic. I feel like he will always feel different to his brother.

    • @maxixe3143
      @maxixe3143 5 лет назад +5

But that doesn’t make sense. Why is that we have decided that it’s sad that the autistic child isn’t the same as his brother? Why isn’t it sad that the other child is different from the autistic one instead? It’s arbitrary. If autistic people were in the majority then documentaries would be made about “those weird kids who make eye contact and are never passionate about things but just like to talk”. It’s just a matter of perception.

Why is the headteacher not trying to show Roxanne better ways of behavior? For example, if she thinks that Simon is taking away her friend:
    1. Finding a way to manage her emotions so she will not lash out
    2. Asking Simon "Do you want to take my friend away?"
Telling Roxanne "You don´t understand that because of your autism" might be true, but it does nothing to make Roxanne better understand or learn better behaviors. It just puts her down.
In my opinion this is a bad school because they do nothing to teach the autistic students how to behave better. And the headteacher seems to not believe in the potential of autistic students, for she focuses mainly on their challenging behavior and how they aren´t normal.

I think it's really sad that you've had this experience. I don't think God showed you hate or discrimination I think people who called themselves Christians or religious did :( They taught you some twisted way of what the love of Jesus is. I'm so sorry! Every part of who I am knows that Jesus loves you exactly for who you are. Whatever you are. I don't care!...He made you. The world or something that called itself church gave you that hate and those nightmares and the discrimination not the Jesus I know. The Jesus I know proves otherwise by saying right in His word that you are worth something! Simply because you breathe. I'd like to pray for you. That these lies and pain humans have caused will go away so that you will have a chance to see how much love God really has for you and it can be your choice not something this world tells you you should or shouldn't become or do. Blessings.
