And yes, this is how high level pianists (and Technicians) evaluate pianos.
He first listens to the overall tone, the colors, the sustain of singing lines. Then he tests the piano's ability to produce fast, repeated and controlled notes. At the end he points out voicing irregularities and finally focuses upon the piano's dampers - how cleanly they cut off (and he correctly points out that it is not "so" easy to make them better.
As a Technician myself I watched Alexis Sultanov go back and forth for 2 hours pre-concert, testing a Steinway vs a Grotrian - and he finally told me to make the Steinway play like the Grotrian!
This was an extremely interesting answer to read. Thank you for all the explanatory details.
I think Richter went in ballz blazing and didn't give a flying fuck about what piano he played on. What a champion!
Here is the full translation from french:
Name of the video : Nikolaï Lugansky chooses his piano | Rachmaninov Cycle at the Champs-Élysées theater.
Lugansky: I'm gonna walk a little...
Other man: Between these two (pianos)... all right...!
*Lugansky plays arpeggios on both pianos*
Lugansky: A little more difficult but it's very light over there (talking about the other piano)...
*Lugansky plays some chopin etudes*
Lugansky: That's why... *inaudible*
*Lugansky tries the other piano*
Lugansky: It's more... *inaudible*.... really it's (more) interesting... than this (talking about the other piano)
*plays again*
Lugansky: *inaudible russian* ... very... very bright...
Other man: yes, thanks to you... one needs to be very careful about those details when it comes to choosing a piano... sound length problems...
Lugansky: It's good if it's not exactly the same (???)... it's good ! but sometimes, it's just too much... this, it sounds good ! just, a little more careful on this...
*plays an arpeggio and notice how the sound stops*
Lugansky: *inhales deeply*
Other man: this... i will fix it... it's just some settings...
Lugansky: i'm not sure if it's that easy...
Other man: not difficult but... i will put some work into it !
*play another arpeggio*
Lugansky: this, good... but sometimes, just a few notes are...
Other man: some differences in release...
Lugansky: i think i'm gonna stay with this one...
Tkx
thank you so much.
More like "I think I will stay with *THIS*" and laughs with internal pain.
Et en français en plus ! Quel artiste ! Mon pianiste préféré de tous les temps ! Chopin par Lugansky, c'est sublime 😋☺️...
Rachmaninov surtout !
I was at his concert 2 month ago and it was awesome!!! Beautiful!!!
He is playing one of the most difficult Chopin Etude (25 - 6) and one of the most difficult Rachmaninov prelude (23 - 9) as if he was merely folding laundry...
Do you know the slow piece from min 1:18 until min 2:35?
@@ItJamesIs chopin piano concerto no 2 -second movement larghetto
C est naturel sous ses mains.
I'd like to see his folded laundry.
J'ADORE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And his successor is Alexander Malofeev.
T'as l'air de bien aimer Rachmaninoff haha
A true musician is always a musician, even while choosing a piano for the concert!
Grande pianista
Phenomenal pianist!
Incroyable vidéo, merci !

Eccezionale ! Un genio, un vero genio!
The right one, sounds like magic. There is something missing, in the left one.
..he finds it light on the keyboard and brilliant in the timbre, although slightly unbalanced in some registers: ..then finally perfect for Rachmaninov. Chopin or Schumann would certainly have preferred them over the one on the left
Perfeição!
Yeahh piano on the right sounded more orchestral me thinks. Bit of a fuller sound

I don’t understand French!
No worries, I got you covered. Whenever you're dealing with translation CONTEXT is king. Given I'm not able to provide subtitles, I will provide a more contextualized interpretation which will ensure all nuances expressed. To set the stage, Nikolai (according to the title) is in the process of selecting which piano he will perform on during an upcoming Rachmaninoff recital to be held at the Champs d'Élysée Theatre.)
There are two pianos (one on the left and one on the right). At 0:25 he says: "Un pétit plus difficile. Mais, c'est très lèger là-bas." He's saying that the piano (the one he's currently sitting at) is more difficult to play than the piano on the left. (Also, when he says "it's a little more difficult," he's referring to the action of the piano, the response time of the keys, how agile they are, and how well they can keep up with passages that require extreme dexterity and speed.
Around 3:25 he is indicating that the piano that he is sitting at is often too bright in the upper octaves. The dealer/technician thanks Nikolai for pointing out that issue. In fact, the dealer/technician goes a step further by highlighting that it is thanks to Nikolai that he is now more vigilant in spotting upper octaves that call attention to themselves because they are too bright. The rest of the dealer's sentence is cut off as Nikolai interrupts to demonstrate just how those top notes stick out due to their excessive brightness. However, Nikolai reiterates, "it's good," as if to say: I don't want you to get the wrong impression, it's not all terrible, but the brightness of those high notes is noticeable, and can be a bit much at times. Nikolai then cautions the dealer/technician to be keep that detail in mind. The dealer reassures Nikolai that he can address the situation. Nikolai, however, wonders if such an issue can actually be resolved.
Nikolai then plays the lower notes of the piano and says: "Ça c'est bon." Bare-bones translation: "That's good." But WHAT is good? Nikolai is referring to the RICHNESS of the lower octaves, which are, indeed, to his liking. However, Nikolai does indicate that there is some sort of imbalance of quality between the lower octaves and the upper octaves.
Notwithstanding, and despite the concerns Nikolai expressed regarding the piano on the right ... it is, indeed, the piano on the right that Nikolai decides to sick with in the end. Meaning: I think I'll go with this one.
I'm glad he chose the piano on the right, by the way. It's the piano I thought he played the best. Time simply stopped when he played the slow movement from the Chopin Piano Concerto. I remember the great Russian pairs figure skating team Ekaterina Goordeva and Sergei Grinkov skating to this music in the 1988 Calgary Olympics. It was truly a legendary performance. That is where I first heard this Chopin concerto. Ever since, whenever I hear this piece, I think of Ekaterina Goordeva and Sergei Grinkov. Sadly, Sergei tragically died during a practice session when his heart gave out at the very young age of 26 or 27. The figure skating world has never been the same. So, my first memories of this particular Chopin piano concerto are wrapped up in this sad memory. On the bright side, Ekaterina Goordeva and Sergei Grinkov gave the world legendary performances that transcended their sport. They were champions of simplicity, grace and quite elegance. What more can a true fan ask for? The gave us their all, and we will be eternally grateful to THEM!
With that being said, I trust my translation will put you on equal footing with any native French speaker watching this clip. Had I just written down the translation (I like this ... this is too high ... that is better) you would have been no better off. It's key to know WHAT Nikolai is referring to and WHY. I also a former pianist, so, I am able to unpack this with a bit more finesse than others, perhaps.
To say Nikolai is a marvelous pianist does him no justice. He's so much more. He has restored my hope in the fact that being a true artist is about more than a bunch of 14-year-olds playing X number of Chopin etudes at the speed of light. Nikolai truly awakens the beast which lies within the piano through his deft phrasing and nuanced musicality. He is ... a living treasure. Enjoy!
