Ottawa as a capital city also has a lot of security considerations that other cities dont have. The propsed location is really not that far from the Parliament buildings and Supreme Court.
Rogers Arena? It's not even that old and it's in a solid location. They're also renovating it by adding new seats, a ring beam around the whole arena with 64 new digital screens, new scoreboard, some surrounding area renovations, and they added a club area this year in the arena connecting to a luxury restaurant. I think its safe to say Rogers Arena is a top tier arena after all of these renovations.
The Flyers are not moving. The WFC was very much built for the Flyers and is beloved for hockey. The Sixers new arena, which may not happen, would be basketball-only. A hockey rink is more than twice the size of a basketball court before you even add benches and penalty boxes. Again, this is the reason you hate college ball in shared NBA/NHL arenas and why the atmosphere sucks. The first 5-10 rows of removable seats are relatively flat until you get to the permanent seats in the lower bowl.
They haven’t updated the design. The design is going to stay the same just be used at a larger scale to incorporate the community rink and the larger land. The outside renderings will stay the same.

The excavation and shoring permit has already been submitted so they can start construction as soon as the design permit is approved by city council.
I've really been enjoying this video series but am still a little lost on the features that most people look for that make for a good arena interior. Is it tangible things like leg room or bathrooms or intangible things like fan intimidation factor or the like. It seems like the majority of new arenas are faceless and are cutting corners. At these 9 and 10 figure price tags, why do that?
Delta Center will get the major renovation (probably outside as well as inside). No new arena will be built. Utah politicians handed owner Ryan Smith $900M dollars provided the Jazz and NHL team stay in downtown SLC. Smith owns the Delta Center. $900M goes a long way in renovating an NHL/NBA arena. Smith already stated he has parties with cutting edge technology to get major renovations done to make Delta Center one of the best dual-purpose arenas in the NHL.
My point is that since Atlanta has already had 2 NHL franchises that both left there, there's probably not much interest by the owners of the other teams to have a third NHL team in Atlanta.

Give Atlanta two ownership groups that blatantly didn’t care about the sport or city just to collect a quick dollar and then be shocked when it doesn’t do well 😐 The WNBA made it work in Atlanta but the NHL couldn’t. That’s an awful look. THAT’S why.
Actually, both of these teams were done in by bad building situations, not lack of fan interest. In the case of AZ, Glendale wanted them to sign a 20 year lease extension on their arena without enough guarantees of upgrades, so they had to move out. Not 100% sure of the Thrashers, but it was a similar situation. The team and the building owners could not get together on a lease that worked for both parties. As far as the Flames were concerned, that was simply bad management from day one. The team generated no fan interest.
