Ronald Binge was a British composer and arranger of light music. This is probably his best known composition. It was originally simply titled Andante cantabile, although the original (1951) orchestral manuscript parts in Binge's own hand show the title The Man In The Street. In 1952 he renamed it to reflect the dawn of a new Elizabethan Age in 1952.

This music video reminds me of the loneliness and isolation in High School in the late 60's when I heard Elizabethan Serenade on 'Radio Voice of the Gospel' on shortwave radio for the first time. The 55 062 downloads (1 January 2020) is not a reflection of the beauty of your version, and I believe it will one day be 'discovered' after all of us are gone! On average this song is downloaded 3 times per hour, which implies that only 3 new people on this planet are listening to the song in during the hour that I would replay it. But ironically, this adds to the loneliness and isolation ... ... ... Thank you once again (55 062 downloads / 26 months / 30 days / 24 hours = 2.9 downloads)

By playing a lot of different pieces of different styles, people can see the potential of this instrument and decide to learn to play it. I finally figured out that it was a zither. Your videos have been wonderfully instructive in how to play the instrument, plus you are an excellent musician. Thank you again!

The chord zither is a more recent type of zither first developed by German settlers in the US during the mid to late 1800s. They tried to simplify things by adding numbers under the strings and claimed anyone could play by just following the numbers. The very early ones had only 3 or 4 chords. In the 1920s and 30s, better and bigger instruments came form Germany itself, like the one I am playing here which has 5 chords.
Recently I've tried this on my egg-cutter; the result being a bit far away from success... :-) But seriously, I'm deeply impressed about the rich sound a zither is able to produce, and especially all the nuances of this famous piece. A marvellous interpretation; my highest compliment!

I've just bought an antique 6 chord zither. My ambition it to be able to play this tune. Even If the Elizabethan Serenade is the only tune I learn to play well, I will be a happy man.

Yes, in Australia, teachers in those days had to learn the autoharp to lead the singing in the classroom. The chord zither has the same shape but is played differently. There is a melody section played by the right hand while the left hand strums pretuned chords. Cheers, Etienne

Hi Etienne, you have what looks like a sharping lever on a string within 2 of the chords. Are they used to change the chord from a minor to a major? (Increasing the number of chords) Which Chords? where did you get them?
You got it right. The 3rd of the chord is raised by a semi tone when the lever is up. It's like putting a finger on the first fret of a guitar. It shortens the vibrating length of the string. My chords are arranged differently to the original. They are from right to left: C maj, A min, F maj, D min, G maj. The levers change G maj to G min and Dmin to Bflat Maj (inverted). One of my students made these levers for me years ago.
What strings do I use? There are three types of strings used: 1) Plain strings: For a full restring, use piano/music wire. You will need sizes 9 to 5. Eg: PIANO WIRE / Original Röslau piano steel wire available from Ebay. For a few replacement strings, use guitar steel strings of the same gauge as the broken one, or the string next to the broken one. You need a micrometre to measure the gauge or take the broken string to your nearest music shop and they will measure its gauge. 2) Thin wound strings: Use wound steel guitar strings. These can be purchased from your local music store or from Ebay* (Eg: SIT Phosphor Bronze Wound Acoustic Guitar Single String). You will need sizes 0.032”and 0.026” 3) Thick copper bass strings: These strings are wound with a copper wire within the length of the vibrating section only (they wouldn’t fit through the pin hole), therefore they have to be custom made. These can be ordered from a string manufacturing company such as Lenzner in Germany (www.lenzner-strings.de). When ordering, you will need to specify: 1) The pitch 2) The vibrating length 3) The length of the copper winding should be about 30mm less than the vibrating length. 4) Ask for no loop and 180mm extra at each end (you will make your own loop).

Beautiful music elegantly performed - how on earth did the zither fall in popularity?
Simply: too many strings to keep in tune and also the original tuning doesn't make sense. I use a different tuning more adapted to our times.
