The refreshed Vios showcases a completely new exterior and interior design. The front features long, squinting headlights, teardrop-shaped fog lamp vents, and a wide trapezoid grille. The taillights have been elongated, wrapping around to the rear quarter panel. Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has introduced new Prime variants to the lineup, which come with skirts, a spoiler, and a uniquely styled bumper right from the showroom. Inside, the cabin has undergone a significant transformation. It now includes a newly designed steering wheel, similar to the one in the Toyota Yaris, and a dashboard with a more cohesive design that seamlessly flows into the door panels.
Toyota has expanded the Vios lineup with several affordably priced new variants, such as the XE and XLE, both featuring CVTs, which are essential for navigating Philippine traffic. These new additions complement the existing E and G variants, which remain core offerings in the Vios lineup. In August 2020, Toyota Philippines gave the Vios another update, featuring a revised front fascia, a restructured pricing scheme, and several new features, enhancing its appeal and value for money. Additionally, Toyota Motor Philippines introduced a new trim level to the lineup, the Gazoo Racing Sport, known as the GR-S.
Specifically, the XE variant and higher now comes ready with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, as well as accessible Bluetooth switches on the steering wheel. Other trims including the G, XLE, and E variants get redesigned seat patterns for the interior. The XE, on the other hand, gets additional two speakers. Lastly, XLE and E grades get a new alloy wheel design for that fresher look.
The Toyota Vios offers two powertrain options: a 1.3-liter 1NR-FE gasoline engine delivering 98 hp and 123 Nm of torque, and a 1.5-liter 2NR-FE engine producing 105 hp and 140 Nm of torque. Both engines can be paired with either a continuously variable transmission (CVT) or a 5-speed manual transmission. Mounted transversely in a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout, these powertrains optimize cabin space.
Suspension setup remains at McPherson strut front and torsion beam rear. The Toyota Vios features gas shock absorbers and coil springs for added comfort, and better control. The chassis of the Vios is constructed with a unibody architecture, which means the frame of the vehicle is one piece. This, in turn, allows for more chassis rigidity without sacrificing lightness.
The mid to high-tier variants also benefit from Optitron gauge clusters and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, adding a premium touch. Additionally, these variants, along with the new XE and XLE models, feature a 7-inch touchscreen audio system with iPod connectivity. Unfortunately, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not yet standard. However, push-start ignition is available on the G variants.
In the latest refresh, the Toyota Vios now features standard LED headlights for the G variant and LED fog lights for the G, E, and XLE variants. Additionally, the G CVT variant benefits from the inclusion of paddle shifters and selectable drive modes, including Eco and Sport. While Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are still not available, the Vios retains its T-Link system, enabling users to mirror their smartphones.
One of the standout features of the Vios is its extensive array of safety features across the entire range. Standard in every model are seven airbags, vehicle stability control, hill-start assist, ABS with EBD and brake assist, five 3-point seatbelts, ISOFIX child seat tethers, and child lock protection. Toyota has also made three airbags standard across the lineup, with the option to upgrade to seven airbags for enhanced safety and peace of mind.
