    am i the only one who prefers pre-rendered graphics to full 3d engines? this looks 100x better than pretty much any AAA 3d game made today

    • @matthewhornbostel9889
      @matthewhornbostel9889 2 года назад +7

      Realtime 3d has been popular for its dynamic and responsive qualities, but prerendered still can work great for some types of games.
      I personally wonder if Cyan jumped to realtime too early - given that their early-mid 2000s forays into realtime were the games in the series that flopped. (Realmyst, Uru, Myst V all did poorly at launch and the reasons varied, but the thing in common was realtime 3d but Now, with Obduction, Myst (2021 version) and Firmament we're seeing them able to make realtime 3d worlds that are close in detail level to the best of the prerendered Myst series work. Because the tech has gotten to the point where that looks way better than it could in the '00s.
      In general, prerendered by its nature will always be well ahead of realtime in fidelity. The difference between what can be rendered in about an hour vs. 1/60th of a second, is always going to be massive. It's possible to do things in prerendered that are unthinkable in realtime - I know, I'm running a render of a VFX sequence that contains 4.5tb of geometry alone* which would never ever work in realtime, at least... not right now. But another decade from now, who knows? Game engines may be doing more graphically by 2035 than Hollywood movies can currently. So while there will always be an edge in detail for prerendered, at some point both prerendered and realtime will be so realistic the perceptual difference won't matter in practice. We're nearly there already in many ways.

    • @Freddis

      You are confusing genre and technology. Your any AAA game is prolly a huge open world. Compare some Uncharted 4 in-house scenes with myst and you will see that Uncharted is head and shoulders above in terms of details and acting.
      With that said. If someone had a target to create an AAA game in the same genre as Myst it would be completely amazing and you would love that. The problem is that kind of adventures are not AAA type of game, since the audience is very narrow. We're talking about a 20 hours long continuous IQ test. Such things impossible to sell to wide public.
      The problem is in the market not in real-time 3D.

And thank you for letting the big story scenes play through! Like you, I've loved the games since I was a little kid, playing them with my Dad. We had the same set up - a notebook to write all the puzzle info down and even the strategy guide for when we REALLY got stuck. This was such a fantastic trip down memory lane, and even after all this time I still got a little emotional when Achenar pulled his final move. I didn't really mind the mysticism aspect of Serinia. As they said, Catherine wrote this Age, and her writing was always considered to be rather out there. Now, whether or not that's a good thing is up to the eye of the beholder, but I did like finally getting to see one of her Ages and how different her writing was compared to the very logical and analytical Atrus.

      @@JordanRogers85 My favorite parts of these commentaries/play through is how you approach and discuss the puzzles. It's refreshing to see someone "analyze" the puzzle like it's the first time playing, rather than simply explaining the solution. It's nice that you take the time to put yourself in the shoes of a first time player, and call out small or subtle hints at the solution. Your videos explain "how" a puzzle is supposed to work, rather than just the answer. It's cleared up puzzles in the past for me, that I now have a deeper understanding and respect for. I also appreciate that during slower parts of the game you have interesting dialogue/content to fill the time. It keeps the entire video engaging and fills in gaps in the story/lore/etc that the player may have missed. Please keep making these! Maybe Obduction next?

    Jumped back into the game this year for the nostalgia trip. It truly is one of my favourite games ever. Mostly, like many others have stated, because of the fact I played it extensively as a kid with my father. I do, however, truly abhor the final puzzle in Haven. Considering it is possible to simply skip it and move on to Serenia, that is what I do every single playthrough. It's quite abominable of a timed puzzle and I hate those in general. Every time I engage in Spire's chair puzzle my heart beats out of my chest. I simply despise when you're not allowed to make a single mistake or you have to start all over. It certainly takes a toll on me.

    Wonderful video - thank you so much for putting it together! I love how you explain things as you go, detailing what you're seeing and what information the player is meant to gather from it. You have a very logical mind that I'm sure helped you complete this while I floundered :) The slowness of the game is a huge problem and I think many of the other game's problems would be mitigated just by fixing that - making the mouse less weird and sluggish, have the cursor highlight the active spots when you mouse over them, and not take five seconds for each step. If movement were quicker, it would be much easier to play and experiment with the puzzles - as it is, it's just so frustrating to even try things. Late on in my video series I timed myself just realigning the wheel on the big water device in Serenia and it takes nearly a full minute to switch it from one direction to the other!
    Serenia is exceptionally weird... it makes sense that they were trying something new, and that it was different because it was a Catherine age, but the sudden appearance of Peter Gabriel was where I completely lost it. The thing that most frustrates me about it was how rubbish the Revelation was - you've got access to this incredible mystical realm, a network of ancestors' memories for thousands of years, and you use it to get a display of six colours representing how Sirrus prefers to arrange his marbles. I think it would have seemed much more worthwhile if it was taken further - if you had to piece memories together to work out a larger puzzle that you couldn't have seen on your own, almost like something from the Zero Escape series.
    And oh dear god the last puzzle is like an edutainment game, "sort out the jumbled conversation" - just like the slowness of the controls, you think you've reached the ending and it just keeps going on and on! It really leaves a bad impression, because the game is absolutely beautiful and has a stunning soundtrack. It's a great story but not a great game!

    I found and have been going through your Myst retrospective series the last few days, and I must say that I really think you found the perfect groove with this video. I'd consider it almost like an annotated long-play which is great, letting the game run through without skipping interactions and cutscenes and providing both good commentary on the puzzles as well as context from research. I realise that you prioritised cutting the videos down to make them more snappy at first, but getting the full uninterrupted long-play is really comforting and many of us appreciate these longer videos, even though we might watch them as chapters over time.
    When or if you find that you'll have the time to do more videos like this one with other work by Cyan or other publishers I'll be here to watch them! I realise that they require a lot of time to create though, I hope you'll be able to find that time when life isn't requiring you elsewhere!

    First, I salute you for soldiering through the mess that is Myst IV without screaming, going to sleep, or throwing things. EVERYTHING about this was rock bottom awful; the tired trope of Atreus and C summoning you to bail them out yet again. The addition of the "Bad Seed" child (check that movie if you don't know it; she is so clearly modeled on that) was horrific. But they had no plot, none of the actors have any interesting human qualities, and 99% of this mess is, as you right call it, busywork. The mystical b.s. is full-on cringe. Riven was full-on genius. Myst Exile had some fascinating art work and an actual plot and stellar acting by the wonderful Brad Dourif. And we can all conclude that Atreus and Catherine are really crappy parents. Even so, I really enjoyed your skill and knowledge and honest appraisals; and I agreed with every one of your negative comments. Brilliant work! I came here following your Myst 3 walk-through. Myst IV: The Tail Wagging the Dog.

    This could have been great but even though I consider myself a strong lateral thinker I found the puzzles non-intuitive and often didn't know if I was on the right track because there was so little feedback.
    I still love the series , and I am glad I played IV for completion , but found this one really frustrating.
    Excellent playthrough though!

    I've always found this approach to games to be really interesting! It made for some impressive visuals in 2004, even if not all of it rendered in real-time.

    • @JordanRogers85
      @JordanRogers85  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, it's a really constrained approach to the game's visuals that offers a blank canvas but a really controlled interaction space. See also: Resident Evil's pre-rendered backgrounds from the PSX and GameCube era.

    I was 4 years old when this released and my father played it with me for the first time. I never got past Tomahna by myself so that part is especially nostalgic to me. Such an amazing atmosphere and the scenery is out of this world beautiful.
    Sometimes I wonder how difficult it would be to upscale the imagery in the game with modern technology - perhaps use AI to sharpen actors' and actresses' recordings while still maintaining their original likeness.
    I wonder if that could be possible. Unless Cyan Worlds decides to give this a remake as well on their own accord.
    Thanks for sharing this video with us fellow Myst lovers.

    Wow...thank you for this play through. I used to think this game had a depth that made it mysterious, but upon rewatch it's just strange for a Myst game. Well, I guess they tried... anyway, love these videos!

    Looking back Serenia kinda gives me Bionicle vibes IMO. Like the spiritual atmosphere along with the advanced mechanical devices like the bathyspheres, and the door to the old memory chamber, not to mention those mechanical looking masks that open and collapse away into nothing like some kind of far future technology.

    Jordan, I will be very honest with you!
    These videos on the Myst "franchise" are just AMAZING! You should really consider doing more of these, as in... grab those other games you liked back then and walk people through them with your very interesting persona
    I think you mentioned once Metroid or so? being your number one? Go for that one!
    You are very well spoken and your videos are well prepared and have high production value
    Think about this! I've watched the Riven one like 4 times in the past months for example
    Blessings

    My biggest problem with this game how slow the interface and transitions were. That and some of the puzzles. But overall, I kind of love it! Music and gfx are amazing but I still kind of want a remaster of this. Thanks for the video.
