Motivation, goal setting, success, and language learning. Motivation for second language acquisition is a dynamic notion, so learning how motivation works is key to helping your students. In this lecture, Theo and I will discuss motivation and goal setting for language learning. Although we mainly draw from Dornyei's concept of the L2 Future Self (clearly, he was influenced by Carl Jung), it is important that educators understand that motivation and success are very closely linked - check out my website for my discussion on that.

The key variable that many EFL / ESL / TESOL researchers fail to address is the link between success (visible learning or succeeding in an optimal challenge) and motivation. In short, those who succeed, feel more motivated - and that is why setting learning tasks that are challenging, but manageable, is key to promoting motivation. Check out www.joshesl.com and you will see this discussed on the page about motivation.
