  • Montpellier Cheltenham a Spa town in Gloucestershire, England, with its Regency buildings.
Montpellier is in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England at the end of the Promenade south of the town centre. Originally developed in the 1830s in conjunction with the spas, and is well known for its bars, cafés, restaurants and range of specialist shops.
Montpellier Spa was initiated by Henry Thompson after springs were discovered on land he bought in 1801. The area was developed as entertainment for the spa facilities. He commissioned the distinctive Rotunda by John Buonarotti Papworth as a pump room in 1825. This was a branch of Lloyds Bank, but is now a part of The Ivy restaurant chain. Opposite are Montpellier Gardens.
Don't miss Cheltenham's most iconic Regency feature; The Caryatids in Montpellier. These 'armless ladies' are a type of column which support the architectural facades of the chic boutiques in Montpellier Walk. Dating from 1840 they are loosely based on classical models on the Acropolis in Athens and are a form of decoration used extensively in 19th century France.
There are 32 Caryatids in total, two were originally sculpted in terracotta by a London artist called Rossi and the remainder were copied by a local Cheltenham man.Any trace of the original Royal Well Spa and Old Well Walk are long since buried under developments, including Cheltenham Ladies College. But the original Montpellier Spa Rotunda building still existds. The Montpellier Arcade still has its original roof and the Caryatides still stand along Montpellier Walk,
Cheltenham Ladies College the iconic boarding school placed in the heart of Cheltenham provides a strong tradition of innovation and empowerment to young women. Perhaps one of the most talked about features of the building is the 70ft high revolving dome observatory constructed with paper mache, steel and painted deep green which was once used as an observation post during the Second World War.
The gardens were the location of the first successful parachute descent. In 1838 John Hampton jumped from his hot air balloon at a height of 6000 feet. His parachute was like an umbrella 15 feet in diameter.

Having watched your 3 excellent Swanage films I decided to watch this Cheltenham one. I live in Gloucester and have been to to and through Montpellier and into Cheltenham zillions of times. This is the first time I have seen the "armless ladies! Driven past them, been past the on the bus and walked past them! The eye test is booked in when the lockdown ends!

An excellent film. I moved from London to Cheltenham in February and am still finding new places to explore - a town full of charm and history.

Made a little one of that:
A walk to find the pieces of The Cheltenham Pigeon Art Project.
      Hope you enjoy Cheltenham 👍🌈🙏

@R A there are uneducated and dishonest people in every corner of this planet, but the history and architecture are still worth seeing.
We always look on the positive side. There are some wonderful people as well. Keep safe 👍🌈 thanks for watching 🙏

@R A it must be hard if you continue to be confronted by that type of behaviour, but when Carol and I have been there we haven’t seen too many people out of control, but we have usually left by ten to get back to Worcester. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment even if it’s on the dark side our videos are not about promoting a place there represent what we see and where we go. Because not everyone can get out and about and people in other parts of the world want to see places they will probably never get to. 🙏🌈
