  • I picked up a DC versio of an Atlas GP15 and then added a TCS drop in decoder along with one of their small Keep Alive capacitors and ended up with a locomotive that runs incredibly well, even through insulated turnouts and areas of slightly dirty track.

We were having a discussion at the model railway club a couple of weeks ago, between some of the N gauge modellers, about the difference between some of the older, less detailed models, and the latest models, with all the 'bells and whistles' (literally sometimes!) that the manufacturers add to them now. We all agreed that we preferred the older, less detailed models, as they usually are heavier, and so will pull a more accurate rake of coaches or goods trucks. Also, at scale speeds, the minute details are often overlooked - and they are also much too fragile for quick changeovers on an exhibition layout! The handrails on your loco may be a bit too big in reality, but looks fine for 99% of the people looking at the layout!

I own 2 of these now. They are simple and reliable. Love them!

I’ll probably buy another as well. I have those two Kato switchers coming in too that I preordered, but this setup is really nice and having two of them together would be great.

Great stuff! Can't wait until someone invents a robotic 3rd hand attachment to help with soldering. 😁
That keep alive is the smallest I've seen. I wonder what kind of capacitor they use? I know tantalum capacitors are very small but they do have a tendency to explode, or the ones I saw a few years ago did.

@StevesTrains You're never going to believe this Steve, but I was listening to a science segment on the radio today and a research team called Danny Clode have developed a robotic third thumb. 😲

What track do you use for your layout

Did the KA block the front headlight?

It did (I didn’t realize that at first) but I can move it out of the way. Some light gets past it but it is dim. There are a couple options I think (well three if I attach another LED with wires on the other side of the KA. I think I can move it to the other end under the board or adjust the orientation to allow more light to get by.
