We are the dead; short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe! They clearly didn't, by the end of the war Germany had lost approximately 7.15 million soldiers (give or take 1 million), these are counted as casualties. However a casualty does not necessarily mean the soldier is dead, rather he is unfit to serve anymore (lost limbs, missing jaws etc.), only around 1.7 million (again, give or take 100,000) German soldiers actually died (mostly on the Western front). If any army had a casualty rate that high during the war the country would've must certainly fell into chaos and revolution (like Russia in 1917).
Well the stuff I've read has said Austrian (specifically as opposed to Austro Hungarian) troops suffered extremely heavy casualties of those that were mobilised. They were in the field longer and with poor or no rotation. Their only ticket out was to be wounded.
#32 PTSD or "shell-shock", was precisely the reason why General Patton slapped a soldier in a field hospital. That slap was believed to have cost Patton his dream command -the Supreme Commander of the Allied Invasion Force during the Normandy landings.
My mother told me that when she was growing up they would often have to pin her father too the floor during thunderstorms as he would, in his mind, be back in World War 2. One time when they were to slow at restraining him he threw my (at the time 7 or 8 years old) mother across the room thinking that she was an enemy soldier. Though he had trouble with flashbacks the rest of his life these hallucinations and flashbacks did lessen up as he got older. He was no cowardly man but war is terrible and beyond the understanding of those who have never had to fight in one.
You forgot to mention Portugal, we remained in peace at the start of the conflict but declared war on Germany in 1916, fighting not only in France but also in Africa.

Dude, South Africa was literally an allied country! And took over German colonies in south west Africa, and they were in the battle of delville wood in Europe, why did you say they were German? Were you referring to a minority of afrikaners in SA who wanted to side with the Germans or the colonies of what is now Namibia?
These are the same geniuses who forgot that the British empire included Australia and New Zealand, as well as others. Didn't even mention us in the "British" losses. Annoyed I am.
I just watched first minute of the vid and came across this discrepancy, scrolled down to see if anyone else already commented on it. Embarrassing to get it wrong. There was a pro German rebellion inside of RoSA but it was defeated by the government.
It wasn't just the Australian soldiers in Gallipoli there were also New Zealanders who were fighting with the Australians and they were called the anzacs
And also a vast majority of the troops were British, even French troops outnumbered ANZAC soldiers. The ratio of British to Australian soldiers was 7:1 and the British did most of the fighting.

This is Propaganda. And why is it always "the british" and "England" and "the Usa" and "the americans"? Not a single fact about russia? Not a single fact about Bulgaria? Not even a single fact about Austria-Hungary? Holy and stop saying austria to Austria-Hungary.
I'm not going to lie here, the British empire did most of the work on the western front, with the blockade of Germany and a attempted assault at a potential ally of Germany and Austria-hungary. At least in northern France. The French did a great job at holding and fighting the southern front, but there were many rebellions within their ranks. Russia was a great power, but didn't know how to use power properly, it just charged across a broad front. Only until they charge across a small front did they see some kind of success. The Americans joined far too late to make a effective effort.

PTSD was referred to as "Battle Fatigue" in WWII and "Shell Shock" in WWI. Many British soldiers who succumbed to Shell Shock in WWI had their records marked "LMF" meaning "Lacking Moral Fibre" suggesting that they were cowards. When the British intercepted the message to the German ambassador in Mexico, it was not passed on immediately as the British did not want the Germans to realise that the British had broken their main code. The Americans received the message thinking that it had been a breach of security in the German Mexican embassy.
"Male" tanks were with bigger guns, "female" with machine guns. Nowadays tanks got both and they actually work, instead of just breaking apart and being male or female on top of that.

Sorry then for saying clickbait. I used the wrong word. I just wanted to say that the "Insane" facts that will "shock you" is a bit misleading. I made that when I was twelve. I keep it out of sentimentality :) Hope you have a nice day! (PS What is pederinjos?)
Correct. The fighting ended in 1918 because of ceasefire brought about by surrender. But the war didn't end until the peace treaty was signed. Similarly I've heard arguments that WW2 didn't end until the Berlin Wall fell and the subsequent reunification of Germany on the 3rd October 1990.
After listening to Dan Carlins hardcore history, I pretty much fascinated by WW1. It get's no media attention, since the USA barely touched it, but man, it was brutal. D-day was also bad place to be, with 25% chance of survival, but it was a walk in the park compared with somme or verdun. Just in the battle of somme, there were 60.000 casulties ON THE FIRST DAY, a total of 1.1 million people died, it was a meat grinder. The first 200.000 or so people had about 99.99% chance to be dead or crippled. Talk about heroic fights. Most of them never saw a enemy, just mowed down by machiene guns, mortar fire, gas attacks or land mines. In WW2 you had least a chance to see an enemy and shoot at him. In WW1? You were lying in a mortar hole, literally in toxic water and on top of about 500.000 people blown to pieces while being constantly shelled and shot at. They said the shelling was like drumming. They didn't even exaggerate. Millions of shells were fired in a short time. It's just really brutal, if WW2 bad, than WW1 must be hell on earth.
25% CHANCE AT SURVIVAL? No lol. allies had 156,000 men....around 12,000 casualties and about 4,000 dead. that meant around 2.5% died......you have the right outlook but your numbers are off. Germans lost 9,000 of 50,000 btw
hey dont sell it short, the US's entry in the war was the very factor that brought it to an end. The Michael Offensive in late 1918 puttered out against a now beefed up Allied Army. Since the americans had gotten combat experience under the french, and then let loose under Pershing, the German army had to face the facts that they were not going to be able to win. America didn't win the war, but we are why it ended.
Formally yes, but there were huge Boer rebellions going on that were backed by germany, so they could do very little as they were always on the brink of civil war.
Seriously, if they really wanted to include that they could have included it in the same fact slot as the one about ww1 being the sixth deadliest modern war.

@lelennyfox34 Yes. They had home rule in their own internal affairs, but not in diplomatic matters. They were dominions, so when the British declared war, Australia and New Zealand (and Cananda, for that matter) were automatically at war.
Don't forget that The Royal Newfoundland Regiment fought at Gallipoli too, It was called The Newfoundland Regiment at the time. It did not get the "Royal" title till later in France. They were the only North American Regiment to fight there, they were not part of Canada at the time as they were their Dominion during WW1 (not a province in Canada till 1949)

2:06 The "South African Republic", also known as "Transvaal Republic" was a country founded by Boer settler (of Dutch origin) in 1852 and conquered by Britain in 1902 during the two Boer Wars. By 1914 it was fully annexed by the British dominion of South Africa, which obviously fought on the side of the Allies, so it is incorrect to mention it as an ally of the Central Powers. There actually was a rebellion of the former Boer in 1914 (knokn as the Maritz rebellion) supported by the German Empire at the start of WW1, but it lasted less than six months.

Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead; short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe!
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high!
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

How can Germany alone have twice as many casualties as all Central powers combined?
You clearly didn't check your numbers.
Had to give a thumbs down.
You want to look at the casualty figures for Austria. Savage!

That soldier also had Malaria.

Shell shock was rebranded as battle fatigue, then it became operational exhaustion, then finally post traumatic stress disorder.

We remember the 11th cause that's when they told the soldiers they are done.
Correct. The fighting ended in 1918 because of ceasefire brought about by surrender. But the war didn't end until the peace treaty was signed. Similarly I've heard arguments that WW2 didn't end until the Berlin Wall fell and the subsequent reunification of Germany on the 3rd October 1990.
18:58 his last name SERVED him well ;)
After listening to Dan Carlins hardcore history, I pretty much fascinated by WW1.
Don’t forget about fucking Gallipoli
The total amount of casualties was in WW II a lot higher, 55 mln, and a lot more civilians died.
South Africa fought AGAINST the Central Powers! What an incredible oversight!
Formally yes, but there were huge Boer rebellions going on that were backed by germany, so they could do very little as they were always on the brink of civil war.
