  • OneMic - the minimalist recording series by John Cuniberti demonstrates that an entire band can be recorded with only one stereo microphone in one take. Each recording session is shot in 4k video on a Sony a7RII by filmmaker Nathaniel Kohfield. What makes this series so different from other live performance videos is that the artist is in complete control of his/her presentation. This means that the sound, balance, dynamics and stereo image is decided upon at the moment of creation, not in post-production. The artist (band) is responsible for the final product. There is no editing of the audio or video. It’s as honest as it can be including imperfections. This organic presentation isn’t limited to “acoustic” music as seen with live classical and folk music. In this series veteran recording engineer John Cuniberti records bands with electric guitars and drums that would normally require a multi-mic, multi-track approach. This is not the first time this has been done but this technique was quickly forsaken soon after the multi-track tape recorder was invented and with it a loss of a level of musical intimacy. The OneMic series demonstrates the positive aspects of the minimalistic recording process of the 1930s but will be captured on modern stereo recording equipment.

    John Cuniberti / OneMic,
youtube stores uploaded files as .mp4 files (which are essentially .mp3 files with video).
The .mp4 format (like the .mp3 format) is the Kriptonite of sonic excellence, because it throws out countless samples.
    Two questions:
    1) In what digital format does your gear record your sessions? I am assuming it is a lossless format?
    2) Are your (96 kHz / 24 bit?) lossless files available for downloading, without going through youtube? Once on youtube, they become 44.1 kHz / 16 bit .mp4 files.
You focus your efforts on sonic excellence. So I would like to hear your recordings, in all their glory, as they are before youtube processes them and diminishes the sound quality.
    Thank you.

Video is 4K and the audio is 96k / 24 Bit.

@@onemic-theminimalist Do you make available the 96 kHz / 24 bit recordings?
The processing that youtube performs diminishes the sound quality -- sort of defeats the effort that you put into making realistic, compression free, process-free recordings via your high-end, cherry picked gear.
I would really like to listen to your recordings, and appreciate them at 100% quality -- not youtube quality. Please let me know if your recordings are available outside of youtube.
      Thank you.

    Hi Mr Cuniberti.
Would you rather recommend an R88a (active version) or a passive R88 with Cloudlifters? The only preamps I have are the preamps of my Apollo X8P. Are you aware of a sonic differnce between the passive and the active versions of the R88 mic? Thank you!

There is a difference. The active is a bit more forward in the 2-4k range
