AOPA Editor at Large, Dave Hirschman takes the Tarragon for a flight. The Tarragon is another European model that could be flown as a light sport airplane in the U.S. under upcoming MOSAIC rules. It features a sleek design, carbon fiber construction, Garmin G3X avionics and the smooth-running turbocharged Rotax 915iS engine.

I'll take one!! Wow, it looks like a dream to fly all. Thanks so much for this report.
Thanks for watching!
IT will be beautifull see a video in which we can see flying at 20 thousand feet and where is istall oxigen for both pilot and passenger and endurance of oxigen ..if possible thanks so much
The Tarragon on display at AirVenture 2024 was $429,000. Tarragon has priced itself out of the market. Almost no one is going to pay 429K for a light sport aircraft when there are numerous substantially lower cost alternatives.
I'd rather spend less (around $300k) for an SW-51
155 knots! I do that in my Thorp T-18 at a total cost of less than $50k!
As slick as it looks, with that high $ engine…
Yeah that was unimpressive.
it does 200 kts cruise...
@@janvanhaaster2093 that should have been in the story then
@@sledawgpilot That higher speed is with the 916 Rotax
@ 👍
Its nice to hear that the USA are changing their rules so that these type of aircraft can be flown there. There are several high performance 600kg microlights availible in Europe that fall outside US rules. Shark, Rizen, Tarragon and others. Many of these use the Rotax 912 to keep the empty weight down and payload up bearing in mind the 600kg MTOW. I've ordered a Shark and am expecting delivery next year.
I’ve followed the European microlights for several years, and of course the Rutherford kids circumnavigating journey. The Shark is incredible machine! Will u have a fuel injected Rotax?
No, it comes with the dual carb 912ULS. however, I'm tempted with the Edge Performance fuel injection kit as a retrofit.
@@FasterLowerMike from Stolcreek convert my RV12 Rotax ULS to fuel injection. He knowledgeable, provides excellent workmanship and responds quickly anytime I had questions. Even followed up after the job was completed. So much better than the standard Bing carbs!!! But doesn’t Shark offer other engine options? Like the 915IS or other?
@marcella2mm160 the only factory options are the 912ULS or a turbocharged engine from Edge Performance. Looks like a great engine for high airfields but as I'm based in the UK hot and high isn't an issue. A 914 would be nice but the Shark doesn't really need more power and with a bigger engine cruise speed could be very close to Vne as it is TAS (flutter) limited. Also it is VERY tightly cowled so definitely no spare space.
I'll give very serious consideration to the aftermarket fuel injection setup. Thanks
Is the resin fireproof, saw a carbon fiber plane burn down to the fabric. Had a turbo rotax in it.
It will burn, but no worse than aluminum.
@berrywd completely wrong,it starts to burn at much less temperature.
Is there a baggage compartment? How big?
Apparently it takes about 80lbs. Which is not bad.
That’s the back seat since you won’t be putting a fold up bike through that tiny back door.
With Mosaic, will this be available as an LSA or Part 23 aircraft instead of an experimental? What about existing airplanes that will fall under new Mosaic rules? Can you If you equip one with all the required IFR items and are rated can you fly it IFR?
Will be LSA and can be equipped for IFR if the pilot is rated.
If MSRP is below $100k (which they definitely could make) this would be a game changer for pilot training market. Cessna cannot keep charging $600k for a 172 forever.
Absolutely impossible. The engine alone is about 50k.
@Jester-uh9xg this is a Rotax 912 100hp-ish right can't be costing same as Lycoming?
You could buy Aircam with 2 of these engines for $200k and Aircam charges premium price due to their name recognition. You can buy Rans bush plane with this engine for $70-80k
There’s no way I think you would see this thing selling for less than $350K. Modern airplanes are extremely expensive.
There is really nothing special about this airplane, it cruises only at 150kt, does not have STOL capability, only carry 2 people, is not built for aerobatics with 10G airframe, the only way it would be useful is for primary training. The only way it would be interesting would be price that's what I'm saying;
It's very pretty...But tandem seating is not ever in my future. Love my wide side by side seating in my Bristell. Love the RG's.
Yea, they each have their merits, but for a toy, I prefer tandem.
Did I miss the cost information?
Well if it's all carbon, with retractable gear this will be a $280,000 airplane that's for sure
lean modern planes are great but the greedy price creep is destroying the segment, now often costing well above 300k. These are simple lawn tractors, they should cost less than 100k. Of course that's difficult when Rotax is fond of their own precious greed of 40-50k$ for their little 1.2liter 4 cylinder.
What about the Research and Design costs? What about development costs?
The reason lawn mowers and cars are cheap is because of economies of scale.
@@DanFrederiksen I hear ya, it’s crazy, I enjoy a j3 over most every plane I’ve flown…simple n cheap(er) than most…a joy. I hope with MOSAIC that there will be more competition …
@@kushagramittal4275 bs. Rotax is a mass producer, they can just get away with greed in aviation because there is no competition and people like you defend their greed
@@DanFrederiksen why don’t you start manufacturing engines than complaining if there is that kind if money in it?
You have zero knowledge how of design and manufacturing and are just blabbing away without any backing to what you are saying.
Also, it’s experimental world, you don’t need an aviation engine. You want it cheap? Put a WV car engine on it and hopefully you don’t die being cheap.
@@kushagramittal4275 do you know what inconel is?
Why does important content always have to be intentionally cluttered with distracting background noise?
Price tag? I bet you it is close to 1 million bucks. I cruise at 170 kts. true on my Falco F.8L. Thanks Tarragon, but I'll pass.
What’s it like to have inherited wealth and disposable income?
great...another aopa video with no information.
Too expensive for what it is
Yeah, I wonder if that’s related to why this one is getting a look. There are many planes like this coming out of the EU with lower prices and better numbers that haven’t gotten an AOPA vid. They did say it’s got a comfortable cockpit and is easy to fly, and both of those things translate to drag.
