  • In this video, I am disassembling a GM (Buick) 3800 series 2 v6 engine at 230,000 mi. to hopefully rebuild. This engine is from a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS.
NOT SUPERCHARGED. It has overheated a lot, has some bad water damage, and knocks really bad.

The rod journals are offset to allow for an even firing pattern, i.e. a spark plug will fire every 120 degrees of crankshaft rotation. Without the offset, the engine would have an odd firing pattern, i.e. instead of every 120 degrees of crank rotation, plugs would fire at 90-150-90-150 intervals. As you might imagine, the even firing interval provides a smoother operating engine. The original iteration of this V6 from 1961 did not have the offset rod journals and had a fairly rough idle as a result. In 1977, Buick changed the design to use the offset journals, and this V6 has had the even firing pattern ever since.

Chris, I had heard of these offset journals decades ago to achieve the even 120 degrees firing pulses, but had never seen a "real life" crank before. Checking the comments before making mine, I saw yours, but the 90-150-90-150 really had me stumped for a few minutes before I figured it out. It took a little head scratching but it clicked, Thanks.

the v 8 was sold to rover / british leyland , kaiser jeep bought the v6 , amc dropped the v6 in favor of their 6 , due to the fuel crises of the early 70s buick bought the engine and the toledo plant back , they were surprized the straps to hold the machinery were still in the floor of the plant saving them a lot of effort, i read a comment by a amc official that they were surprised that gm figured out how to smooth out the engine , it was called the oddfire engine , in parts catalogs as late as 2000 they refered to the engine as such

Excellent ! job on the video man..no stupid music,,sped up the bits that needed it..showed the ins & outs us amateur ecotech 3.8 owners need, that not one single big name engine channel includes ...the ecotech 3.8 is the everymans engine and very likely the best engine ever produced..cheers from Australia down under...we use those engines over here extensively btw..and some of us are doing all we can too not let them die

230 000 miles on that engine! no wonder GM 3.8's have such a great reputation. Never seen such a damaged water pump 06:53 with almost non existent fins, apparently its not an OEM pump. Thanks for showing this great content🔥

My 3800 series 2 blew at 109,000 miles.
She was very well taken care of. I use to get a hell of a deal on oil and filters so I was changing once a month, mostly for fun.
I did the lower intake manifold gaskets last month so, as meticulous as I am, I must have missed something.
Sounded like rod knock, then it seized up after 10 miles of knock.
I have the old motor on a stand. I can't wait to do a post-mortem on it.

I destroyed my 3800 l67. After doing lots of work to it. I was told lifters when I bought it and I replaced them and nope it suffered from piston slap quite bad. Not to mention alot of water was under the valve covers. I put a heavy load on it and the #3 piston shattered into pieces. Now I just picked up a l32 engine i'm dropping into the l67 space with low mileage.

The early 1960s Fireball V6 is the ancestor of these engines. Buick came up with the offset cylinders to try to reduce vibrations.

10:26 to 10:59. I had no idea the cylinders could clank like that on the block. Had an '02 Firebird with the same engine. I feel that is what happened to mine. Had to sell it. However, I know deep down it was treated better that that engine. Cooling was never an issue. Replaced water pump and elbows before they became a problem.

Your doing a full tear down and disassembly of the entire engine. Why wouldn't you want to replace and upgrade whatever you can whenever you can while the motor is out of the car...🤔?
It's like taking apart the bottom end, replacing the crank and keep the old bearings -- believing that you can get a few more miles off of them!
All I can hear in his voice is "should replace this" but I can probably re-use it"...!
    * Might as well keep that old water pump you removed and tell yourself that with the right coolant and thermostat it won't matter that the water pump impeller is destroyed -- 🥴!
Complete engine rebuild. It'll take 6 weeks to tear it down just to put 6 quarts of fresh oil back in it and whoola...Brand New Engine on a budget! 👍
