The current decision as it stands has ruined the whole project, the realization that trains will now run much slower, that platforms will be shorter along with shorter trains, so the capacity calculations are now duff will be looked at again by a more sane future government and department of transport not driven by the road lobby as present. After all the current decision was only made to appease Tory voters (who would never use this anyway being as they own 4 WD 4.2 L Turbo diesels and are happy in their shires), A stronger set of politicians of all parties would see that getting capacity for freight from the Southern and Eastern ports and the tunnel is a necessity for carbon targets, for road congestion relief, the idea that this was about journey times as a red herring. Well Dave you made some pretty biased (sorry 'ill-informed') statements there. let me help you: * The decision to curtail the project was right given the cost explosion. Further studies will be (and indeed already are) in place to get to Manchester and Leeds. * The trains will run at the designs speed not slower. * The platforms will not be shorter as the stations are already in build. As designed. * The trains will not be shorter just fewer of them to start off. The trains will be legacy compatible and run on past Birmingham to the North. As designed. * The capacity between London and Birmingham and on to the North will be as designed just slower beyond Birmingham. * The DoT is not 'driven by the road lobby' ( nice pun). Although the way the rail unions have tried to destroy their industry you couldn't blame the DoT for lacking faith in rail. * The decision to curtail was a financial one not a political one. Want proof? Most Tory voters are in the southern section which is being built. * To assume all Tory voters 'own 4 WD 4.2 L Turbo diesels' is bordering on hilarious while sadly showing how ignorant the Liberal Left can be. Huge quantities of concrete have been used to build hs2 so its level remains fairly constant - unlike traditional railways which follow the contours of the land. Renewing and extending traditional rail lines is probably peanuts by comparison with the enormous costs of hs2. Instead of the multi-billion cost of hs2 we could have had huge improvements and additions to our current rail network, improving travel for everyone - not just a handful of MPs and businessmen! The extended line from Oxford to Cambridge is an excellent example of good connectivity - perfect for all those travellers who don't need to travel via London. So, instead of similar schemes in all parts of the UK, we're getting just one railway line which will serve 2 stations in London and (I believe) 2 stations in Birmingham!
Please explain how the extended line from Oxford to Cambridge helps ease chronic congestion on the two track WCML - one of the most used rail corridors in the country.
@@mrglide7078 .. arguments that the WCML will soon be at full "capacity" rely on a discredited, out of date forecasting model which overestimates long distance passenger growth & isn't used for anything anymore except to justify the monstrous white elephant that is HS2. A DfT analysis shows that in peak hours leaving Euston, WCML trains were loaded at just 52.2%.
I hate to pop your bubble but reinstating small lines would not help at all with the capacity of the network as a whole and would be poor value for money. HS2 that we are getting will be added to in the future once we have a government that isn't so short term. Have you seen the cost to benefit for the Cxford to Cambridge line vs HS2 as planned?

Incredible engineering ❤
Fantastic, elegant structure. Nice work - well done to all the team!
Pretty elegant design and top notch engineering - going to carry trains for years to come!
HS2 should be built in full alongside HS3 in the North of England
Northern England may end up with more cheaper to build routes instead.
I've seen a couple of sections in this area up close & it's amazing. Hoping it remains low profile when the electrics are added.
Excellent work 👏
Once the deck is complete you should hold some sort of race (running / cycling) on it before tracklaying
Great work. How much did it cost? Could the line have gone round for less money?
