Find an early 90s honda trx250x atv and use the engine from that, or the 300 ex from honda. Both had reverse, and are air cooled instead of liquid cooled. Plenty of power without being to power for a kid to ride.
On the next upgrade-- I'd just jump to a 1000cc sports bike engine, like an R1 or CBR1000 or ZR1 or GSXR. You can always put a governor bolt on the throttle pedal and keep it dialed down as they grow into it. But you would have much more reliability and it would be drag track ready when they get old enough.. plus it would be fun for adults to squeeze into- just like your other build.. It's more unique and Plus the resale value would be way higher. Just depends on what cheap engine falls in your lap I guess. :)
Be Kind to your kids, don't have the tyre pressure any higher than 10psi, so they can stay on top of the sand and not sink in and get stuck, But having a 17hp small block myself, I recommend dropping to a smaller 19mm carb or changing the throttle linkages in a way that only gives the 1/2 throttle
@@motomule Jet boats at gold beach. Fraisers in Bandon. Shore acres, Charleston, coos Bay, north bend, pizza rays (bedrocks) in Winchester Bay..Kinda miss the coast. Astoria down to Newport is fun too. Stuck in the Midwest now but it's enjoyable.

Yes, but those ones have a much different rear axle... Much more heavy duty than this 1in mild steel keyed shaft.
