I bought the Yongnuo when it came out. Saving for the Nikon lens, but wasn't there yet... Don't regret my purchase. Thanks for helping me feel good about it. No complaints from me.
To be fair, literally every mirrorless 85mm lens is absolutely stellar, i dont think they are hard to design since they all perform so incredibly well, the sonys, viltrox, yongnuos etc.
I have both Nikkor and Third Party. Most of my third party purchases ae Sigma Art (F mount) or Laowa Ultra Wide Angle 10, 12 and 15mm. No Nikkor shorter than 20mm Z mount yet. The Aurora is very active and that is my main subject matter. I look for glass that is good enough for the task at hand, but I sure like my S line glass. As they say, I have one foot planted on each side of the fence.
I think that is the future if third party manufactures keep making them this good. I keep getting the aurora photos wrong, the last time I was doing my exposures too long, as it was so bright I only needed 5 second exposures I think
@@RussandLoz View your histogram after every shot, I adjust my exposure to 1 or 2 stops to the left. I shoot wide open, shutter speed depends on Aurora movement, usually 2 seconds, iso about 6400 to start.
Really interesting comparison this one. Given its almost as good as the Nikon Z 85mm 1.8s, would you say its on a par or better than the older Nikon F 85mm 1.8G? And while it seems like a no brainer price wise at less than half the price, what price difference do you think the Nikon lens is worth? Appreciate that is a pretty subjective question!
@@dogdadoutdoors I can’t remember what the old f mount versions are like. It would be interesting to compare to the 1.4 if I had one. Like with all tech. You pay a lot more for a bit more. So the Nikon lens is a fair price on promo or used especially
Interesting to hear your Nikon doesn't focus straight away (jerks). Mine does that too. Would be great to see examples of rendition at F8. Good video as always.
Tamron have made 2 of my all time favourite lenses for my Nikon system, 35mm 1.8 VC and the 70-200 G1. Bar anything else out there. Having said that, I would not use Sigma glass if you paid me! swings and roundabouts.
The Nikon lens is more than twice as much money and the difference is very slight. But, will the Nikon lens last longer? Better construction? I think the YN85 f/1.8 is well worth a look. Thanks for the review. I enjoy watching you two chatting in the park.
@@RussandLoz the only third-party lens I’ve considered was the Voitlander 35 for my ZF. I wanted the aperture control for a complete analogue experience. Outside of that I only wanna shoot Nikon; call me a fanboy! 😂
If you want to sell the lens, the Nikon is much easier to sell I'm sure. If you can buy the Nikon second hand, your own write-off will be lower than with the Yongnuo. By the way; the Nikon 85mm 1.8S is really, really good. In stead of sharpness, I would be much more interested in lens errors and the way the unsharpness renders. Most lenses are sharp enough under easy circumstances.
@@TuttiPutti67 Yes some camera stores might not even want the yongnuo! In the video we did compare the out of focus areas. Almost identical I would say
Chinese manufacturers will shake up the camera market a lot. They can just produce cheaper, so offer a similar product for less money. Initially they struggle with experience, but once they are a few years in, they catch up and are hard to beat because of their cost structure. We've seen it with Viltrox, there will be more to come. It will be very interesting to see because they not only compete against Nikon, Fuji, Sony and Canon, they also compete against each other. Viltrox, Yongnou, Meike, TTA, 7Artisans, Sirui, some of these names people will associate with poor quality for now, but they did the same for Viltrox some years back.
I'd still buy the Nikon for reliability, quality control and compatibility. You never know when a new camera or firmware releases and it becomes incompatible.
@@RussandLoz even so, some Tamron lenses never worked for the FTZ adapter in the end. Despite having a USB firmware update option. 3rd party lenses have always been a mixed bag for me, but I do love my Voigtlanders though.
no offense mate but I think this takes a little bit of a limited view on what counts as a 3rd party lens. A Zeiss Otus or Coastal Optic lens would both be third party. Also in the cat photo it was easy to spot because of LocA and the overall feeling of color accuracy. Thankfully I despise 85mm so no difficult purchase choice for me.

Hi … How about the focusing noise of the lens ? Interested in that matter when it comes to shooting video …

Wow, I'm genuinely shocked. I really didn't expect much out of a Yongnuo lens. Now I really have a dilemma. Great work on this one guys.
So were we! But if you can find a good deal on Nikon, and want the extra bit of sharpness. But otherwise Yongnuo is a good chance to try!
I take photos of things that move fast so focus speed is important to me.
Which one would you pick?
I have this lens, it's really nice, the colors and look are perfect!
It still surprises me with the results! I hope they make more options!
Crazy results! Amazing how some third party brands have moved up to “excellent” level. I have a Viltrox 13mm i use on my Z50 that also impresses me.
Yes I remember the viltrox lenses were excellent on dx cameras, i hope to see this continue
I do hope this comes out for APSC X Mount
Nice lens and lovely images Russ 😍 as a portrait lens then image quality is more than adequate. So good to see cheaper options and more choice 👍
Love your guys chilled, chatting way that you do your reviews. I never need an 85mm, but if I did I'd definitely get the cheaper lens.
Thats a similar way we thought of it, don't need one very often so it's an excellent price option!
Very useful information and analysis. Thank you.
Thanks, it did take a long time to test and edit this as usual, but fascinated me with the results!

I am looking forward to the 7Artisans test. 11 aperture blades should provide some interesting bokeh.

Interesting to hear your's does that too! Can I ask why f8? for studio?
Yes, studio but it doesn't have to be F8 as long as it's not wide open. Find it hard to tell rendering when background is smooshed.
Great video as always. Do they do a 35 1.8? Also could you recommend a 35 1.8 that is weatherproof and beats nikons price please?
I'm not sure if Yongnuo make a 35mm, but there are a few like Viltrox and 7artisans which aren't as well made as this, but still ok. See our reviews!
