Living in the moment isn't cringe. Fuck this modern internet where sentimental and healthy human behavior is "cringe". No wonder depression is so ubiquitous. Great vid--Anno is amazing.
Anno 2070, to me, is the best of the series. I guess I have a lot of nostalgia for the game because it got me through a tough break up over 10 years ago. I still remember playing coop with 2 other friends and building the end-game monument. It was able to calm and de-stress me. I also completed Anno 1800 several times coop with a friend. I’ll always be a fan of this series.
I was sad when they finally pulled the plug on 1800. I particularly wanted a South-East Asia instance - the Princess would have made an ideal introductory character to it. Some tips for anyone new to the franchise: The best way to learn how 1800 works is to play 1404. In 1800, get to Enbesa as soon as possible, obtain a white flag and start trading watches from Archie to Ketema - thereafter money is no problem. Get hold of Costume Designers from Eli - no need to ship cotton (until you get into really fancy stuff later.) In the opposite direction don't bother shipping sewing machines until you're ready to colonise Manola. In the Arctic you can buy most of your regional needs from the Inuit camp. Old Nate gives you enough gas to construct two airships - do it and ignore the rest of the quest until you've used them to claim all the gas plateaux. The AI characters will have airships by other means but only you will be able to power cities without oil. Isobel sells aluminium - enough for all your postal needs. Set up a New World hacienda farm solely to produce fertiliser to ship across the globe (put in a sell order at the harbour to get rid of the alpaca wool).
I'm also long fan of Anno series, since Anno 1602. IMHO Anno 1800 is the best. For the next Anno I would like something like Ancient Rome/Greek or back to roots Portugal exploration era. Building an Portugal empire with Anno 1800 settings would be so good. And every new map bring new resources and expantion od production line. And then you move all the diferent products and resorces from all over the world back to your main city.

Having never played Anno before, I recently grabbed 1880 in a sale and then 1404 soon after. So glad I did. I was surprised by just how chilled out they were. They closest thing I can compare to them is Banished, but that is quite stressful.
Thanks for the video! Should definitely try the series. For some reason, I never payed attention to it, even though the game of my childhood was Caesar 3, so I totally understand your nostalgic feelings and vibes.
I started this series on 2070 after having never heard of Anno before. Guess it is still kinda niche. I went in expecting some kind of strategy/management but was blown away immediately by the piano music and the opening screen. It felt like the beginning of a children's storybook and as the game continued to be developed I loved taking part in the real time events. No other game quite captivated me in the same way. I guess there's a certain 'intensity' to Anno games based further forwards in time. Anno has definitely been a weird mix of constantly working to improve or reach a goal whilst also finding time to catch glimpses of your creation and really coming to appreciate what went into making it. I liked 2070 for seeing residences grow taller and taller whilst seeing the landscape transform based on my decisions and 1800 was an incredible and exciting journey of industrialisation. Steam engines will always make my heart race. I guess at the end of the day, as much as I would love to see another sci-fi or even post apocalyptic Anno, we are in agreement: Anno is great because it's not following the trend of many other games. It's cozy and yet complex, filled with unforgettable characters whilst you manage potentially millions and through it all it's just content to keep doing things it's own thing in it's own way.

I played Anno 1404 unrecommended for the first time in 2018. First rts and everything. It was like finding a missing puzzle piece. Cozy is the perfect description. I did play anno 1800 a lot as well, and I just dont have the same love for it. There's something about it. Too complex, perhaps? It's still great. I actually prefer the time period. There's just something about 1404, nothing quite has matched the actual palpable feeling it gave me.
As a very seasoned gamer, Anno as a series is absolutely unmatched in many fields. I wish Stronghold could keep producing as a series with this reliability.
Dude.. I feel EXACTLY the same about the series. Like. Exactly! Down to hating German dubs and this being the only game I play in German. My partner is English, so almost all of my media is in English. I didn't play the future ones. 1404 was my fave. I was hyped for 1800. I play slow, don't build pretty, don't build huge - just relax. Literally everything you say I agree with completely! Einfach gemütlich. Und dann sind Stunden einfach weg.
I played 1602 waaaay backm when I was 6 or 7, didn't speak english, didn't understand the game, but man, if I hear a music piece that 1602 uses, I instantly get a flashback to the good old days. Brings tears to my eyes. Anno 1800 really nailed the music. When I was hearing the songs for the first time I noticed that I was just staring into the screen, listening to music. This happened only once before, when I was playing Mechanicus and the legendary Children of the Omnissiah made it's way into my ears I was staring yet again at the screen with tears in my eyes and goosebumps on my skin.
Agreed. I came across Anno 1404 entirely by accident, and I've never played a game so charming, gorgeous and absolutely addictive. Although I think I need a few more hundred hours learning the ropes before I can call it relaxing. 😂 The NPCs add some stress, but at the same time they're such fun characters that the game feels lonely without them.
I have never played any of the Anno games, but I did buy the new one in the Steam sale and will definitely get around to playing it now. And this, FWSeba, was the best game review I have ever seen on RUclips. Thank you.
Thanks for your awesome video. I love city builders but have been on the fence about Anno. You've convinced me to give it a try. Calmness is a good thing!
Anno 1800 reached over 3.5mio players, it got so many DLC's for a reason. It is not a niche game, since the first Anno it has a very loyal and large player base. With Anno 1800 it exploded. One reason is that Anno always stayed to it's game, and didn't change to much. The Music won several prices as well.
Anno 1800 with no pirate and competitors is the calmest game I've ever played. Even Tetris feels more hectic. Yet, beneath calm surface there are so many planning and optimizing production and supply chain. And it's addictive as hell.
Fantastic video! I've had Anno 1800 for a while but haven't downloaded it yet, given my limited phone data plan. After watching your video, I'm definitely making the download happen. Thanks for the inspiration!
Personally for me Anno 1602 is my "feel good" games of all Anno's in the series. Its graphics ooze a certain charm, the music is just nice and it's mechanics weren't as complicated or convoluted like in later installments
Yeah, the futuristic setting doesn't really work for the Anno series. With the DLCs 1800 already reached the 1940s era too. Going back, I don't think any other middle age era would be that much different from Anno 1404. What I'd like if the next Anno game would go way back to the roots of civilization. The first foragers settling down at a suitable location, discovering new technologies like domesticating animals and growing crops. And then each tier would push them forward in time, up to classical ancient era. What I'd do away with in a sense is boats tho. Replace the flagship with scouts, and trade ships with caravans. And the sea with untamed wilds. Where islands are habitable areas. Of course the sea can be a part of the game too, but later, when the people can build boats big enough to cross it. The neat thing they could do is the area you build at could determine what kind of architecture and needs your people need. They could advance in the analogue of hellenistic, egyptian, mesopotamian, far eastern, etc styles. Kinda like how 1404 had the occident and the orient on the same worldmap.
What a charming review 😊 I heard about this game a couple weeks ago and it sounds awesome! My dad and I are waiting for it to hopefully go on sale around Christmas and we’re gonna nerd out! Happy to hear this is a cozy game because I really enjoy those too!
I loved 1602, 1701, and 1503. For some reason I didn’t play the others but have been meaning to play 1800. I play the way you do and M not interested in the future games either. You’ve made me want to play 1404 also. I really enjoyed your video.
I was the weird 10 year old playing Anno 1602 and I enjoyed it so much! Now my son is 10 and I got us Anno 1800 for Christmas this year. I hope it lives up to my cozy memories...
It's like listening you to describe how I feel, how I play this masterpiece. One thing I can add here and I love is that this game has almost no bugs or glitches that will interrupt the gameplay. Also this little reminder every 2 hours, it's such a lovely detail and care for the players.
@@FWSeba yeah, it's like a masterpiece of game development. Do you play in multiplayer? I rarely find people who wanna play it, cuz it takes a lot of time. But honestly, playing just against the AIs sometimes makes me feel lonely in the Anno world.
Looks amazing!! It's hard to find a relaxing game that isn't boring to players, i think that's also why a lot of people still play OSRS 20+ years later.
@@Cyon2012 Old School Runescape, basically everything before they introduced the wilderness changes in 2007 + things that were approved by the players via poll.
We used to play Anno has a family, it was so much fun. I remember in Anno 1404, the announcer says in the beginning of a round "Choose your banner" distinctively.
Wonderful video! I love how many facettes you point out, makes me appreciate the game so much more 😊 can't wait to play it again. Also, your voice is so soothing, I'll definitely check out more of your videos!
I started out with Anno 1602 after Anno 1503 had been out for a year I think. My mom let me pick one of the cheaper ( a bit older) games at the local games store one day and I chose Anno 1602 as I was already a fan of RTS games and enjoyed Age of Empires 1 & 2 immensly. I though I just picked another rts game which seemed interesting. But what I got was something completely different. And despite me being too young to be good at the game, skipping the tutorial text and playing it too much like I would a normal RTS so I never got far and my cities went bankrupt I still loved the game for its concept and atmosphere:P I liked it so much that I saved up money to buy Anno 1503 a year later. And holy shit it still has some of the most beautiful isometric 2D art and graphics I've ever seen. It might look a little bit static by todays standard. But the colour and details is so great. And it still looks mostly full of life and movement everywhere. And the atmosphere and soundtrack was a step up from 1602 which was already great! I like the newer Anno titles too. And Anno 1701 was kinda a remake/reboot of 1602 I felt. But Anno 1503 is still my favourite. Escpecially now that I'm old and mature enough to actually understand and play the game properly. And I think it deserves a remake as well. And by remake I mean keep it mostly as it is despite visually improvements true to the original games tone and atmosphere. But there is room for a lot of quality of life improvements to the rescource, trade and micro management. And also the military part. I feel like a game like Anno 1503 doesen't benefit from individual soliders. But rather platoons or companies like in Anno 1701 or Age of Empires 3. As the warfare conceptually was great but tedious in practise. To me Anno 1503 had the most classic RTS influence, but is/was also the most free form city builder where the relaxing mentality of "lets see what happens" truly shines.
Dude, it feels like you're my twin brother from another mother! I feel the EXACT same way as you do.Thank you so much for this love letter to the Anno series.
I only played the game when it was under the title *1602 A.D.* I never associated the Anno series with that so I never played the others. Used to love leaving the game running while i went to work, then come back and try to salvage whatever was left of my city.
my bigger problem with anno 1800 is yhat with yhe new world yhere are so many islands that feels stressful to always need to change islands and world to keep the lohistic chain going
I came late to the franchise. Anno 1800 is stupendous! I love this game, but I stopped playing it last year due to IRL issues. After this video, I think I'm going to load up a new Anno 1800 game and give it a go. thanks for the video. It really brought me back.
I need 117 to have at least as good of a soundtrack as 1800, but if possible, I would like it to be as good as 1404's, which is just top-tier. Few games have soundtracks that are so good I listen to them casually, but 1404 is one of them. If my relaxation game is going to relax me, it's got to have a soundtrack like that. Also, if your friend is actually listening to their own music while playing Anno I think you just need a new friend lmao.
I slept on Anno until 1800, and i was angry at myself for doing so. Before trying these games, i thought it was not for me if its not a "proper" rts. How wrong i was. Now i love both 1800, and 1404.
1404 is the only game of this series that I have played so far. The entries set in the future have potential, but this trend towards "dystopia is inevitable" with the bleak gray brutalist buildings and monocolors everywhere, is not really inevitable. People are craving a return to artistic architecture, many are beginning to return to God and religion. An integration of old values enriched by growing technology could be a great Anno-style games set in the future. It would be cool to see something incorporate a new renaissance, and you dismantle gray husks and replace them with architecture including neo-art deco, neo-gothic, and neo-byzantine, and other revitalizations; or just build stuff anew like previous games within this third millennium renaissance. Look to Russia's latest war cathedral, and Parisian suburb Le Plessis-Robinson. The future doesn't need to be bleak, and the human spirit demands a pleasing-to-look-at home.
Of course it's relaxing game... until you turn around and your city starts randomly burning behind your back or your investors cause yet another riot 🤣 Love it though :)
2070 was my favorite before 1800 released, imo it is an upgrade of 1404 with different factions which i absolutely love, it still has my favorite OST, when playing Anno i love playing with Hard AI and get punished for playing too slow since to this day Anno 2070 has the most aggresive AI in the series til this day, even in Anno 1800 i have combat overhaul mod to make the AI very aggresive, i guess i'm the exact opposite of you yet we love the same series for opposite reason, i love this series so much! My hope for next Anno is called "Anno '45" set in 1945s (because it still 9 when you add the number, 4+5=9 silly i know).
I have every original of anno that ever came out including 1701 and 1404 historic edition. For anno 1800 i have everything that ever came out. all i need is to get rest of historic editions to have full anno collection.
@@FWSeba when i bought the games i got them on disocunt so for games for anno series i owe i also have all dlcs for all of them. One that isn't bad but also isn't fun to play is 2205. 2070 was good it is futuristic but follows god old anno style, 2205 takes different aproach which i don't like but i do like what you can do in that game. history editions of 1404 and 1701 are worth playing becuse you get nicer look and usefull mechanic form 2070 if you plaed it then you should kow what i'm talking about. Anno series is well known but they don't do bombastic announcements like others.
You have exactly pointed it out why I love playing this game. I started with 1404, then played 1701, both the future settings and now I am playing 1800 over and over again. It's just relaxing. Although I am German, I do play the English version - just my preference.
I would love to see an Anno 9 split between ancient rome (main) and ancient greece + ancient egypt honestly, I think there is so much to do and unpack production wise and architectural wise and the traveling through archipelagos would seem so natural being set in a "mediterranean sea", and I think it would really fit well with the high contrast kind of cartoonish style (something akin to caesar 3), I guess we'll see if the future brings it to us 😀
I'm German, so it's always weird when people call certain series "niche". Anno was HUGE here, at least up until 1404 (which is regarded as the best one by many).
Anyway, gutes Video, liked&subscribed, I guess.
Nice Narration on this video. I have this game in my library and have played it a few times. Seems to be a bit of a resource hog on graphics, but I will agree with you, It is a relaxing game
I snagged 1602 by chance and immediately fell in love with the series. Logged the most time in 1701. Unfortunately, my computer wasn't able to run the later iterations l as I switched over to the xbox and PS4. Might snag one of them on the Steam Deck thougj as I'm feeling that itch of leading a group of preschoolers in an earlier century management sim
Absolutely not, though they do add great value to the game. A lot of the decorations are also available through the in-game mod browser, as far as I know. I own all DLC so I don't know how it behaves without it, but I assume it's fine
1602 and 1503 are 2 of the greatest games ever made, I still play them both. I play 1800 on occasion and get pretty far in the game, Its good just doesn't hold the same appeal for me.
Sounds like something I would really like to try, loved the old original Stronghold game for the same reason 'relaxing'. The only problem like many other similar games is the text and icon size, small mini maps if playing on a big TV. Unfortunately, even with lowering resolution, max subtitle size, playing around with scaling most often doesn't help much.

Absolutely, the music in 1800 is masterful. When they brought back some tunes from 1404 in 1800 I couldn't believe my ears
I remember playing 1602 AD, Age of Empires, and Civilization IV as a kid. Good times
I have never played any of the Anno games, but I did buy the new one in the Steam sale and will definitely get around to playing it now. And this, FWSeba, was the best game review I have ever seen on RUclips. Thank you.
No, thank you 🥹😭
Thanks for your awesome video. I love city builders but have been on the fence about Anno. You've convinced me to give it a try. Calmness is a good thing!
Glad you like the video! And you'll love Anno!
Your video captures what ANNO meant and means to me so eloquently and perfectly! Gut gemacht, Herr Seba :)
Dankeschön, Herr Robert!
Thank you for your kind words, have fun!
Sounds interesting 🤔
Exactly. I just enjoy playing it. Thank you :)
What a charming review 😊 I heard about this game a couple weeks ago and it sounds awesome! My dad and I are waiting for it to hopefully go on sale around Christmas and we’re gonna nerd out! Happy to hear this is a cozy game because I really enjoy those too!
Thank you! This game is what you make of it. Optimise and go to war and it's stressful as hell, but lay back and don't rush it and it's super chill.
Hope you got it, if not its on sale right now ends on the 15th though👍
I loved 1602, 1701, and 1503. For some reason I didn’t play the others but have been meaning to play 1800. I play the way you do and M not interested in the future games either. You’ve made me want to play 1404 also. I really enjoyed your video.
Thank you 😊
I was the weird 10 year old playing Anno 1602 and I enjoyed it so much! Now my son is 10 and I got us Anno 1800 for Christmas this year. I hope it lives up to my cozy memories...
Aw that's so cute! I bet it will!
It's like listening you to describe how I feel, how I play this masterpiece. One thing I can add here and I love is that this game has almost no bugs or glitches that will interrupt the gameplay. Also this little reminder every 2 hours, it's such a lovely detail and care for the players.
True, I never thought about that. It's mostly bug free 🤯
@@FWSeba yeah, it's like a masterpiece of game development. Do you play in multiplayer? I rarely find people who wanna play it, cuz it takes a lot of time. But honestly, playing just against the AIs sometimes makes me feel lonely in the Anno world.
@@lyuboslavsalev7522 I have one friend I play multiplayer with, but except for that I like playing by myself
great review and insights, really well put together. Never played the game but I'm delighted it has such good memories for you.
Thank you!
100000000% AGREE. Love this game. I've only played 1800
Looks amazing!! It's hard to find a relaxing game that isn't boring to players, i think that's also why a lot of people still play OSRS 20+ years later.
What stands OSRS for please?
@@Cyon2012 Old School Runescape, basically everything before they introduced the wilderness changes in 2007 + things that were approved by the players via poll.
@@Sarnarath Ok, thank you. I have never played RuneScape but if it is relaxing perhaps I should.
We used to play Anno has a family, it was so much fun. I remember in Anno 1404, the announcer says in the beginning of a round "Choose your banner" distinctively.
Are you sure about the banner thing?
I only remember it from the earlier ones
@@FWSeba might have been Anno 1602, that was like 20+ years ago, nostalgic af
Wonderful video! I love how many facettes you point out, makes me appreciate the game so much more 😊 can't wait to play it again. Also, your voice is so soothing, I'll definitely check out more of your videos!
Thanks a lot ♥️
I started out with Anno 1602 after Anno 1503 had been out for a year I think. My mom let me pick one of the cheaper ( a bit older) games at the local games store one day and I chose Anno 1602 as I was already a fan of RTS games and enjoyed Age of Empires 1 & 2 immensly. I though I just picked another rts game which seemed interesting. But what I got was something completely different. And despite me being too young to be good at the game, skipping the tutorial text and playing it too much like I would a normal RTS so I never got far and my cities went bankrupt I still loved the game for its concept and atmosphere:P
I liked it so much that I saved up money to buy Anno 1503 a year later.
It's so cool to hear all of you guy's stories connected to Anno!
Dude, it feels like you're my twin brother from another mother! I feel the EXACT same way as you do.Thank you so much for this love letter to the Anno series.
@@8xpdhpckkg thanks bro ❤️🥺
Best city building series. Anno 1800 is exceptional.
It absolutely is!
That game stressed me out. May e I tried to do too much too soon. But the creative mode seemed too dull. Weird.
Anno1404 is an amazing game still! I love it for the exact same reasons you do
That's so nice to hear!
I came late to the franchise. Anno 1800 is stupendous! I love this game, but I stopped playing it last year due to IRL issues. After this video, I think I'm going to load up a new Anno 1800 game and give it a go. thanks for the video. It really brought me back.
That's so great to hear, have fun!
1602 AD is very fun, except when you find gold, then, unless you get cocky, you will eventually win, but it still takes some planning, and execution.
I really enjoyed your awesome video!
Thank you!
I slept on Anno until 1800, and i was angry at myself for doing so. Before trying these games, i thought it was not for me if its not a "proper" rts. How wrong i was. Now i love both 1800, and 1404.
I think that 1404 was killed by those very creepy smiling faces in the corner. I don't know whats wrong with me. They just rub me the wrong way.
I love them 😅
.
Yeah you get me! I love Fallout 3 & 4 for the environment including the music! I get fully immersed!
.
I got the same feeling for Uncharted waters 2 from Koei 😊
2070 was a good game and when deep ocean DLC was added it opened the game up so much. But nothing is as good as 1800.
anno is such an amazing series i remember my cousin giving me the 1602 disk.
All these years and I never put together that the digits in the titles always add up to 9. Was this meant as an intentional easter egg?
As far as I know, it was intentional, yes
I only have Anno 1800 for the PS5, after watching your video I'm going to play during the winter break.
Great decision!
The future doesn't need to be bleak, and the human spirit demands a pleasing-to-look-at home.
aww thta exactgly how i feel about anno. Than was lovely thanks. x
Thank you!
Impressive!
This guy gets it.
Anno 801 Set in either Scandinavia or Britain, Anno 900, anno 702 set in China
My favourite character is 1404 Narrator ( french by Benoît Allemane, Morgan Freeman dub ). The cosiest way to be reminded to take a cup of coffee.
You have exactly pointed it out why I love playing this game. I started with 1404, then played 1701, both the future settings and now I am playing 1800 over and over again. It's just relaxing. Although I am German, I do play the English version - just my preference.
This was great. Thank you. It as like a love story.
Excellent description of the Anno games. I started with 1404, tried 2070, skipped 2205 and is addicted to 1800.
Thank you!
I would love to see an Anno 9 split between ancient rome (main) and ancient greece + ancient egypt honestly, I think there is so much to do and unpack production wise and architectural wise and the traveling through archipelagos would seem so natural being set in a "mediterranean sea", and I think it would really fit well with the high contrast kind of cartoonish style (something akin to caesar 3), I guess we'll see if the future brings it to us 😀
That sounds really interesting!
Never give this video Spanish subtitles. Truly cursed.
Thanks for a cool introduction to anno for someone who's never played though
Okay 👀 You're welcome!
Anno games are great but for the most relaxing, that has to be Foundation. An amazing game..
Great music and your voice =)
Thank you!
I'm German, so it's always weird when people call certain series "niche". Anno was HUGE here, at least up until 1404 (which is regarded as the best one by many).
Denke ich auch 😅

Nice Narration on this video. I have this game in my library and have played it a few times. Seems to be a bit of a resource hog on graphics, but I will agree with you, It is a relaxing game
It's very well optimized though, and especially CPU heavy. So maybe turn down population density and draw distance to improve FPS.
Oh and thanks! 😅
@@FWSeba I will try that. Thank you :)
anno is the best for introvert gamers who just want to build in a sandbox ☕
Well-presented and nicely explained. Thanks!
I can highly recommend 1800! It has so much from the old ones but also refreshing new mechanics
That's how I play every game lol
I miss this type of gameplay.
do u need dlc to enjoy this? they're still quite pricy
Absolutely not, though they do add great value to the game. A lot of the decorations are also available through the in-game mod browser, as far as I know. I own all DLC so I don't know how it behaves without it, but I assume it's fine
Anno #8 being focused around the time of Henry the 8th... maybe??? Anno #9 simply being Anno 9, sounds prefect... Anno 2025, I'm with you "nope"
I think there's not even HUD scaling in the newer Annos :/
anno has a console release so they should ahve you covered with that!
@@TheRUclipsUser69 thanks but it's a pc that's hooked up to this big TV
