There is no comparison between Ronaldo and Messi. Messi is a complete player. Ronaldo is a scorer. Messi is as good a scorer as Ronaldo, 100 times better a dribbler, 100 times better passer.

Both of you aren't wrong. In my opinion Messi is the Goat for the Very reason that he is a Complete player, not taking anything away from Ronaldo. But Messi has "completed" soccer. He's won everything there is to win including a World Cup. Has the record for scoring 91 goals in 1 season. King Messi's feats will not be replicated or beaten in our lifetime. We're lucky we got to witness both Messi and Ronaldo playing at the same time and even against each other. Would've been cool to see them both play together in a Euro team in the past.
Then why ronaldo has a bigger fanbase? PLUS are we going to exclude the facts ronaldo has better goals more diverse and 70% of the job was xavi and iniesta at most of the goals?

For beginner football fans, you might think some of these was poor defending. But I'll tell you it's not. It's not as easy as Messi makes it look. And Goalkeepers can literally use their hands to grab or catch the ball, that's why they rush forward whenever a heavy touch is taken or when the ball is lose. If keeper picks the ball with his hands, then the attack stops entirely. You can't take the ball from the keeper's hand unless he kicks it.
Also it’s easier to see their flaws with a bird eyes view from video, have to remember defenders see the game with blind spots not like we see on video
Yeah, he does not know about how effective he uses fake shots/fake passes. Those are the situations the defending looks poor in
And also you have to take into consideration the "outside" rule, that's why there are many different way to defend and also that is why most of the defenders are in line.
It is also a way to choke the shooting angles for the attacker, thus, theoretically, leaving him with less options to score a goal. But, then again, Messi was built diferent.
I am 40 years old and watching football my whole life and Messi is the greatest player of my lifetime. Ronaldo R9 would have been but injuries and the fact he didn't take care of himself was a contributor and a major factor to why he is not. Cristiano Ronaldo made his success through hard work and determination but for me Messi is the best footballer I have ever seen. There were players who were more naturally gifted than Cristiano Ronaldo but he was so good on desire where Messi and Brazilian Ronaldo was more naturally gifted

They both represent the “unreachable”, “having unbelievable skills”, they both make the others stars look casuals and boring. No more dunks or fade away mj type shots make u feel excited after experiencing how curry plays. Curry’s long range shots after crazy dribbles are the equivalent of messi’s unmatched dribbling and creating his own chances by these dribbles. Lebron is more like a mix between zidane and a strong forward like drogba or zlatan.
9:10 the goalkeeper comes out to try and cut/reduce the angle Messi has to shoot. If he stays in the "pocket", it's much easier for Messi to score because he has a wider choice of where to place the ball. When the forward has passed the last defender, you'll always see the goalie coming out to confront him. It also puts more pressure on the forward because now he has to worry about how to pass the goalie, who now has a distinct advantage because he can use his hands...

@@marcosarg1 I agree, he miscalculated Messi's speed and failed to adjust in time. I was just trying to let Schuyler know that it's normal for a goalkeeper to come out of the goal zone to try and cut off the forward and reduce his shooting angle.

Also the goal keeper doesn’t have bird eyes view like we do when watching a video lol. The game is much more complicated when you’re actually on the field and only have two eyes and vision can be blocked by your own defenders.
7:50 - Not a bad defense. Messi was faking a kick on goal, and if the player did not try to close the angle and Messi had shot the ball, he could easily score from there. The defenders have to respect that the guy could score from anywhere unless you close the angle, and Messi uses it to his advantage with all his fakes. Remember that some of these players getting destroyed are some of the best soccer defenders in the world. Oh, did I mention that he's also one of the very best passers of all time with some of the top number of assists?

Also that angle is a really common angle for left footed players to curl the ball in top left corner so the defender had to cover it . And again these are some of the best defenders in the world so positionally they rarely make mistakes .

Imagine running at full speed then changing direction mutiple times when controlling the ball at your feet whilst other top class footballers are trying to tackle and foul you. He is the best dribbler of all time, one of the greatest goalscorers of all time, one of the best passers of all time and his vision is second to none. Add the pressure of doing it in front of 100000 fans week on week for over 15 years and making it look easy. He is able to do things no other player has ever done. GOAT

In NBA terms: Maradona and Pelé would historically be like Jordan and Magic, Messi would be Lebron (although in this case this Lebron would surpass Jordan) and Cristiano would be something like Durant or Giannis but he would not reach the level of Jordan or Lebron, but people I would put him there just because he is a contemporary of Messi.

Ronaldo is a great player...one of the best of his generation. Messi is the best player the sport has ever seen.
The problem with all the "bad defenders" and "bad goalies" is, that they get many millions, because they are the best in the world and Messi makes them loook this bad. The top payed defenders in the world honestly state that it would need 3 of them to stop Messi in beast mode.
In soccer you can't stay on your line as a goalie. It's not like in hockey, the goal is too big. You need to close down the angles and put pressure on the attacker.

Also, when you said that the defender was wrong leaving Messi all the space for him to enter, the defender was trying to close the gap for the "usually normal next move" from an attacker in that circumstances; Shoot with his left leg to the far post. But instead, Messi did a Messi Move; "unpredictable"... You saw how many players he left on the floor, this aren't amateur players, it's just; they're against messi. Even the best defenders and goalkeepers in Messi's prime suffered.

Ronaldo was a really good player, even haters must admit that. Almost nobody can reach his stadistics.
Having said that, Ronaldo has some major disadventages that makes Messi way better.
1) While Messi makes other players better with his passes, play, spirit... Ronaldo forces his partners no play for him He increases his stats but the partners decreise theirs. He has to shoot all the faults, all the penalties, finish all the big chances, even when he is not the best option or isn't that good at faults (he shoots stronger than Messi, but with way less accuracy). So, if we put Messi in a team with two others scorers that make 15 goals per year, both Messi and Cristiano will make 50 goals, but Messi's teammates will increase their average to 20-25+ goals, but Cristiano's will reduce it to 10 or less
2) Cristiano has a better body, so he shoots stronger and is better at headers. Also, he helps a little bit to defense. But except this points, Messi greatly surpasses him in every point of the game: assists, variety of ways to score, pass, vision of the game, strategy, sinergy with other players, technical habilities... He is too much.
Of course, it is valid to preffer Ronaldo's style over Messi style... But while Ronaldo is a scorer, Messi is a scorer, asistant, controller... He simply understands the game way better than Ronaldo or anyone else.

Messi and Ronaldo are both legends of the game. However, what Messi has done cannot be compared to any others...
Ronaldo beats Messi in 3 things: Headings (goals and duels won), penalties (more goals and higher scoring percentage) and total number of goals (44 more goals in 150 more games).
Messi wins out in all other aspects: More goals per game, More G/A per game, more dribbles, more passes, more plays, more trophies...Remove penalties and suddenly Messi is the one with the highest number of goals too.

The thing about Messi that amazes me (well, ONE of the things) is how calm he is at all times. He can be five yards from the goal, two yards from the goalie, with defenders all around, and he can still make actual decisions... he can be patient. 99.999 of players would just shoot immediately. He is just so calm, so controlled, so patient. Unbelievable. Unmatchable.

The thing about Messi is his mentality. As long as he can get to the ball, he won't give it up. 99% of all other players in the world would drop at the slightest touch from an opponent. But not Messi. Not as long as he even has the chance to hold onto the ball. That, his speed, ball control and agility make him the absolute number 1 in the world.

defender was pretty much forced to close down on him, as Messi is (primarily) left footed and has a killer bend shot from that angle that has meant quite a lot of goals during his career. Messi was closing in for the shot there, defender closed down to cut off the shooting angle so the ball would bounce on him when shot. It then turned out that Messi used to him in closing down to shake him off after a dribble to instead move in for the killer blow.
Had the defender not closed down, then Messi would've taken a shot he had a VERY big chance of converting...and then the defender would've been blamed on terrible defense aswell for not pressing in and trying to block the shot. As he closed in, Messi dribbled and scored instead... and he gets blamed on terrible defense because he moved in. Lose/lose; damned if you do, damned if you don't.
This is like telling a defender who fell for a Kobe Bryant's pump fake why had he jumped when KB instead dribbled past him...well, because KB had a killer shot he *had* to defend against and had he not jumped, he'd probably given away an easy bucket too. It's what great offensive players in sports do. They try to force their defender to commit to a certain defending move by threatening them with an action, and once they're locked into that, then they get destroyed when the offensive player does something completey different instead. And Messi is, far and beyond, the best football player in history at doing exactly that.
summing up: It's not terrible defending - it's that Messi is so damned skilled and has such an all around arsenal of moves, shots and dribbles that he constantly puts defenders in no win situations that, whatever they do, they get mowed down.

I am writing this text with the utmost respect for Ronaldo. I don’t remember Ronaldo passing through 5-6 opponent players like pillars through strength, power, technique and dribbling. Yes, he also scored a lot of goals, and many of them were decisive, but Leo is GREAT! God created him specifically for this game,
