All good except TIP Number 5. DON'T apply black bars, except its only in a select part of the 16/9 video. If you want ultrawidescreen (21/9 - 2.35 aspect ratio) change your project resolution so that anyscreen it can be viewed properly on any screen of any size.

This 10 easy steps will make your video more cinematic: 1. Frame Your Shots: Use the rule of thirds 2. Create a shadow depth of field: Use a lens between F3.5 and F1.2 3. Stabilize Your moving footage: Use a gimball or a steadycam. 4. Use the "warp" stabilizer effect in premiere pro. 5. Add cine bars 6. Color Grade your footage 7. Slow down your footage : if you dont have a gimball, than you can slow your footage down and your handheld Shots will be nice and smooth.(use high frame rate (60,120, etc.) 8. Use the Histogram on your camera 9. Use a slider. 10. Use some epic font
In all sincerity, thank-you for these tips, Mathieu. Last September I was in South America (Galapagos --- photographers eye candy) with a group and two of the guys had brought a drone and a gimbal. Cool equipment for sure! All I had was my dinky iPhone. I took a few shots using some camera moves, let them look and they both went, "WOW! How did you do that?" Well, I had 27 years in the TV business, primarily as a cameraman and said, "Gentlemen, before there was steady-cam, there was steady hand." Sometimes it's not the tools in the box but how you use them. Even old guys like me have to keep up on new techniques and I think, hey! I need to try that! It looks really cool! So, yeah. Keep going, my friend. Great tips!
I think what they meant was cropping, not adding (adding will look horrible with compression and color changing). Sometimes your equipment doesn't shoot in the cinematic look you want, so you can crop (cut off) some footage on top and bottom. But if you're shooting at 16/9 it should be good enough. All depends on the look the filmmaker wants.
I agree with #10. Cool fonts just make you look smart. :) But...on #8 If you use S-log on a Sony alpha, the histogram should have peaks averaging in the upper half. Have fun with your camera, folks!

Very good about exposed. Low exposure is much better then high exposed. If footage stay with low light you can up in post and the inverse no, you really loose the footage great tips
Overexposing loses you information, yes, but underexposing also causes grain which also does the same thing. What's best is to expose to the right BUT if your most important subjects remain undersxposed when ETTRing, then you should overexpose and lose highlights because your subject matters more than the highlights. Check out " dynamic range" episode on my channel about this.

No useless intro to skip over, no yappy talking I want to fast forward, straight to the point, no segment for sponsorship ad. Wish all videos were like this.
1:09 - Don't add black bars, use the correct (Anamorphic) type of lens. You _could_ shoot extra wide with Flags and then crop but that's second rate. 1:48 - Don't use the Histogram for video, listen to Wolfcrow and others. A Vectorscope is what's needed. There were a couple of others but I'll leave it with those two. Check out the IMAX Channel for long Trailers and to see how Big Screen is shot. Thanks for your videos and the effort to create them. YT, Rob
I strongly disagree about needing to use anamorphic lenses to achieve a widescreen format. They are a relic of the past that are only used for their other aesthetic qualities now. A given aspect ratio is achieved by cropping the footage, whether in-camera or in post, and there is nothing "second rate" about it. I do agree that you shouldn't just output 16:9 footage with black bars, and your aspect ratio should be set correctly in the editing software.
@@nomadben I disagree. Lenses are round, a lens that isn't round (oval) produces a distorted output that would have to be corrected. Round lenses usually produce a round image circle, except for anamorphic lenses. Image sensors are usually rectangular, though there are a small number of square sensors. So if you have a square sensor, of which there are no professional cinematic cameras offering that (EG: Sony Venice is 36x24mm, 6048x4032), then you could use an non-anamorphic lens and make effective use of the expensive lens and sensor. Since a rectangular sensor is almost a certainty, in order to get the image circle to cover the sensor, one would use an anamorphic lens; to provide a rectangular output, since televisions and movie theaters have rectangular screens. That doesn't mean it's impossible to use a round non-anamorphic lens on a square sensor and project the result to a square screen, nor does it mean that you couldn't use a round non-anamorphic lens and 'black bar' the result in Post to create a widescreen result. What it means is that each recorded pixel costs a lot of money (in a professional production) and you don't want to throw money away by chopping/ black barring your work. It would be like buying and cooking a round steak, then cutting it into a rectangle and throwing some of the meat away.
Lol "10 easy steps" buy a f/2 lens, buy a Gimbal, buy a camera that shoots 60fps, learn to color grade..... There are no easy steps to real filmmaking, as harsh as that could sound if you do it the easy way you're gonna be stuck doing okay work (not talking about you Mathieu). "there are no two words in the english language more hurtful than good job" (quote from whiplash) if you're an artist you do not settle for good enough, ever.

Well if have a modern phone then your phone can shoot at 60 fps and use the built-in stabilizer on your phone and use warp stabilizer, then you have a good result. Then just color grade, it's not that hard, there is tutorials on youtube on how to do it easy. Add cinematic blackbars and then you should have a kinda good result.
Damiano Diprima Quick reminder just in case: Frames Per Second (or FPS) is how many pictures the camera is collecting per second. Most "cinematic" projects play the video back with 24 Frames Per Second. So collecting 1 second of footage at 60 Frames Per Second results in 60 Frames. Then, when you put it into your editor and convert it to 24Frames Per Second, you now have 40% more video or 2 and a half seconds. So, taking 60FPS and turning into 24FPS can stretch it out into slow motion video that's 40% slower than the shooting it all originally in 24FPS. Also, shooting in 24FPS then slowing down in post will make it look jumpy. There's a lot of lost frames between one another.
MyLurkerChannel thanks, it is because I'm into photography and not filming, and I almost don't know anything about it, so I couldn't understand the point of that, but fortunately you helped me, thank you again.
Do you mean shoot footage you intend to use in slow motion at 60fps and then play it at 24fps to give you nice slow motion? I would normally shoot film footage at 24fps if it wasn't for slow motion?
I always work in 23.97 even though I've shot everything in PAL, just to get that cinematic looK! Also loving that ca. 10% IRE in the blacks! Always gonna use cine bars from now on 🙌🏻
on some cameras you are able to set the framerate to 48 fps, which means that you can create a nice slow motion by lowering the speed of the clip to 50% when editing. If you shot in let´s say 60fps, you can conform your clips as 24fps. Just google "conform footage to 24fps"
ray rakero in most editing programs you can set your projects settings to 24 or 23.9 fps. 23.9 fps gives the most cinematic look. Thats why a lot of people use it

Didn't know warp stab would also color grade your footage ;)
The Bold font is like my most favorite font.... simple but more perfect any other non curly font i know.
I believe we should not put black bars in the video. Instead, choose a correct aspect ratio and let the video player create the black bars for you.
Yes, thats just how it is. Black bars are an invention of youtubers who have no idea of real filmmaking.
