On the one year anniversary of riding my ebike and the twenty year anniversary of my first of four heart attacks I got a clean bill of cardiac health for the first time. I go everywhere on my bike including grocery shopping and camping! I could never go back to a car. Someone needs to create a heater for ebikes. I hope it’s you and that you get filthy rich!😊

You already have some pretty good examples of how the infa-structure change would look and how to implement it. Sweden has been doing this for years. They have large networks of bike roads. And they maintain them year round. Making it safe to ride everywhere all of the time. It is radically cheaper to maintain than car roads as they have a lot less wear and tare.
As far as where we draw the line from ebike to other classes of vehicles it's actually pretty well defined. You went over the classes of ebike here so I won't get into that. But the other things that define an ebike as a rule are having a crank, pedals and being able to be peddled. If you don't have peddles you are a motoscooter which requires a license, registration, and insruance (in most states). If you have peddles and you go over 28 but less than 41 you are a moped. Registration, license, and insruance (in most states). If you go over 41 peddles or no peddles you are a motorcycle which requires a motorcycle specific license (the motorscooter and moped for whatever reason can be ridden with either a car or motorcycle license),registration, and insurance (in most states).
One of the bad wraps ebikes have gotten are because of the high powered ebikes that people are jetting around on illegally. I personally think it's a big part of the negativity around ebikes in a lot of peoples mind. When folks thing of ebikes in America they tend to think of the Sur ron, and the super 73. The Sur Ron is shipped as an edirt bike. There's no intention for it to be ridden on roads stock. It doesn't have peddles, it doesn't have a crank, it's too fast. There are road legal kits for it, but almost no one runs them because they are an expensive after market kit. The super 73 and many of it's contemporaries actually do come street legal, but have means of unlocking them to make them go much faster. And the companies allow this under the pretense that the bikes are required to only be driven at those higher speeds off road. The issue is people just run them at those much too high speeds anyway.
Recently there has been some crack down on it. And that's good. If we can get to a point where collectively we agree that ebikes are a vehicle with these restrictions and if you want to ride it as an ebike you have to honor those restrictions we'll be in a much better place.
If we can also get the government onboard with some sort of tax incentive for making an ebike your primary form of transportation that would go a long ways to getting them into increased implementation.

Similar problem here in Canada. I've come across countless homebuilds and tweaked e-bikes that best 50kmph+ on my daily commute. Not too far back, I witnessed a garage built
e-bike that was clocked at 100kmph on a MUP with a stated speed limit of 30kmph.

I used to be a petrolhead too. Gave up on the idea of owning a car after a while though because just applying for a license here in the UK is a pain in the ass. There was a huge backlog of applications due to the pandemic, so it was taking up to a year for some people to receive their provisional license. Decided to buy an Engwe EP-2 Pro back in February for £1100. It was the biggest purchase of my life, but it's proven to be the best purchase of my life. I'll be honest, I mainly use it as a grocery getter, but it's perfect for this purpose. I'm currently in the process of doing some light upgrades to it. Just put on some low profile alloy pedals and I'm waiting on a stem and 8" BMX race bars to put on it so I can get rid of the giraffe neck stem. Might upgrade the battery/controller/motor later down the line, but my main concern right now is the brakes because they're not great. Can't be bothered with hydraulic ones, but I am going to upgrade the rotors to 203mm at some point. I've heard they make a good bit of difference.

Consider this. The USA is 2x bigger than your entire continent. We have our ccurrent infrastructure already, and loads of economists (much smarter than me) have stated that overnight infrasctructure change would be more damaging than helpful. If you've never seen a stroad then you're probably not that famillar with North America. You must understand what infrastructure we have already and why i.e. you gotta work with what you got. Gradual change in the right direction is the name of the game. In my lifetime, I will always have access to roads, and cars. My kids? who knows. For the time being, cars are here to stay. A point of this video is that they don't have to be in cities like they are now.
Lastly, don't think that becuase someone likes pancakes that they don't link waffles. I believe most young people in the US agree that we should blend our modes of transit. We don't have to be so divided :)

Even though I live in the mildest Canadian climate, there are times during winter I purposefully lower power assist to increase physical exertion in an effort to keep warm. I've invested in heated gloves and wear thermal underwear whilst biking...yet, tomorrow and Wednesday, I'm facing 85 minute, 40 degree Celsius (104 F) rides.

Bye bye bike. See it at the impound please.😂 Get cops out on bikes to follow and witness group rides that are annoyances 👍 Tickets will pay for the extra cop training and equipment 😎

Good script. Ebikes look really fun in the right context, i.e. well designed bike paths. I just don't know how versatile they are around town. In two other college towns, like Durham or Chapel Hill NC, you'd get crushed under a truck at some point. Few bike paths connect anything of note, so you'd be out in the stroads. People still have ebikes of course, but you can't supplant most of your car travel. These towns definitely need to create more infrastructure for biking. Also, how do you secure an ebike? Bikes are stolen so rapidly. You'd probably need to replace them once a year. I do agree with an absolute top speed for these things. The tech is straightforward enough that I can imagine people building their own drag bikes or similar. We should place speed limits on the use side, in addition to the current power limitations.

    • @Qsandbank
      @Qsandbank  Год назад +4

In my use case, I really can supplement about 95 percent of driving with my ebike. Costco, and other misc out of downtown stuff are what I use the car for.
Yes, change in our infrastructure needs to happen. It'll be slow but worthwhile.
I secure my bike with 2 locks, and I have theft insurance for 4 dollars a month and 100 dollar deductible. I would actually like to see VINs on ebikes which would dramatically reduce theft.
      Thanks for the feedback! :)

I'm not sure I buy the whole "mindset" thing you talk abt with regard to safety. I mean of course you would have had more dangerous encounters with conventional cyclists because they make up the plurality of ppl using bike paths. But if your problem is with "cyclist culture" (see: I am not a "Cyclist" (and most Dutch people aren't either) by Not Just Bikes, 2020) know that it has only arisen due to hostile policymaking.

Thanks for the feedback, and I appreciate the time you took to write this. IDK where you're from, but here where recreational cycling is high, it's a bit of a public health crisis (unnoficially) where folks on bikes are constantly near-missing others. The mindset is "I'm going as fast as possible to excersize" and less so utilizing a shared space for funcional reasons. We can have both! Just requires a small culture change. :)
