Helicopter vs. Airplane | Which is more fun to fly?!?

  • What is more fun to fly? An airplane or a helicopter? As a helicopter pilot, I’m clearly biased but from my outsider's perspective the airplane world appeared to have some advantages. To bridge appease my curiosity and bridge the gap between airplane and helicopter enthusiasts, I met my friend, automotive photographer James Lipman, at El Mirage dry lakebed. We traded flights in each other’s aircraft and had tons of fun along the way. We also learned about the differences, similarities, and peculiarities of James’s airplane and my helicopter.
My helicopter is a 1978 Enstrom 280C while James flies a 1987 Vans RV-4. My helicopter seats 3 on its bench seat while the RV-4 accommodates a pilot and 1 passenger in a tandem seating arrangement. My helicopter cruises around 95 MPH while James can easily fly at 175 miles per hour. Unsurprisingly, the RV-4 aerobatic airplane and my Enstrom helicopter couldn’t be much more different.
How did I, a dedicated helicopter pilot, perform flying James’s airplane? Did James, a seasoned airplane pilot, successfully hover my helicopter? Did the predator drone that was circling nearby give either of us a panic attack? So many questions. All answered in this episode of Micah Flies. #MicahFlies

I flew fixed wing for 20 years before learning to fly helicopters. I thought it would be an easy transition, and for the most part it was. The hardest thing for me was coming in to land and pushing the stick forward! Totally alien behavior. My instructor found it very humorous, kept telling me I was going to stop 500 feet before the pad. I finally figured it out. And my 2 cents - airplanes are the best for getting somewhere, helicopters are the most fun

I had my first aviation lesson about 2 months ago. I am doing it for strictly recreational purposes. It was in a R22 helicopter. I quickly found it was more stressful to fly that I thought. I started planes my next lesson. I now have 17 hours in a Cessna and they are fun! One day I might go back and get my heli PPL but here are some pros and cons for plane vs heli for anyone looking to fly soley recreationally:
    Plane cons:
    1. Can’t hover (however you can fly safely around 60 kts which is great for sight seeing)
    2. Need a runway to take off/land
    Plane pros:
    1. Lower cost (if looking to buy)
    2. Rentability (my biggest pro) whenever I go on an adventure I want to be able to rent a plane and see things from a different perspective. You can rent a plane almost anywhere, like a car.
    3. Lower maintenance cost (if you own)
    Heli cons:
    1. High cost (if looking to buy)
    2. Can’t just go rent one (you have to make a career out of it to fly them, unless you have a boat load of cash)
    3. High maint cost, rebuilds cost 1/2-2/3 cost of the unit
    Heli pros
    1. Can hover
    2. No runway needed

Seems like the age-old debate of skiing vs snowboarding. Here’s the “answer”: do whichever you enjoy. I’ve done both. I’ll take skiing any day. Others love boarding. That’s great. Do what you want and what works for your budget/circumstances. I’m also an instrument-rated private airplane pilot. Flying airplanes is fun. I would love to learn to fly a chopper - it looks like a blast. I can’t really fly a chopper from Seattle to San Diego the same way that I can with an airplane. Bottom line is they’re different. Do whatever the heck you want, do it well, and have a freaking blast! Cheers!

I say rotary all the way. Any place too far to drive you'd be better off taking an airline. Any place short enough for fixed wing by the time you get to the hangar/preflight/take off then land/refuel/tie down, you'd practically be there by car anyway, and then you'd have a car! If you're going to fly for fun then helicopter is the only way. The world is a boring flat place above 5000 ft. Helicopters keep you connected and give you that magic carpet ride.

Over the years of compiling my 3300 plus hours of flight time, I have scored .8 hr flying a GoodYear Blimp, I was taught to do aileron rolls in Boeing Stearman by one of the Red Baron Pizza team pilots, I was taught to do rolls in an AT-6 by Steve Gustafson with the North American Aerobatic Team (Now Aero Shell demonstration team). Possibly the real benefit of the helicopter is quick up and away which in a devastating earthquake or 1000 ft wall of water about to slam into California the chance of survival is greater. :-)
The question of Helicopter vs. Airplane made me think of the people who either love Apple and hate microsoft or vice versa. Or even those are Opera fans ....... there is the age old controversy between 2 Mozart Operas, Magic Flute and Don Juan.
Personally I think if one loves flying both machines are great plus gliders. Why must one choose, each has its own unique experience. As a boy I was particularly fascinated by Sea planes, no need for an airport just a body of water.

4:50. One moment... “The entire rotor tilts forward”??? Isn’t it that the blades change their angle depending on their rotation location, which then creates lift on a certain side, which then makes the entire helicopter tilt forward or sideways?!?

    • @piaflyer
      @piaflyer 4 года назад

The main rotor works on the gyroscopic procession rules like a bicycle wheel. The lift created on one main rotor actually takes effect 90 degrees in the direction of rotation. So to tilt the main rotor forward the angle of attack occurs on the right side of the helicopter that has a counter-clockwise rotation, which most made in America do. This is done with what is called a swash plate. A swash plate is like the bearing plate on a bar stool where you are able to change the angle of rotation. The collective changes the vertical position of the swashplate while the collective changes the angle.

If you had a big yard, say 1/2 an acre or 1 acre could you just keep it at your house instead of the airport?

    • @MicahMuzio

As long as there's no law specifically disallowing off-airport helicopter landings in that community, then yes.

I have been driving manual transmission for many years. Never replaced a clutch. But, I can't heal\toe. Would I be able to learn to fly a rotary wing aircraft?

Josh Pinchuk With good instruction and enough hours in the cockpit, yeah probably.
A good first step is to google flight schools near you and book a “discovery flight”. They’ll introduce you to flying and let you try the controls. 🤘

Heel toe is so difficult because of the awkward positioning of your feet. In a helicopter you're just pushing left and right, it'll come natural.

I would like a video on one of these aircraft ride alongs where you talk about your love with them. Did you ever think of joining the military after college as a kid to let them train you to fly and do it as a job? I wear contacts so the military said no way on becoming a pilot. I am just realizing my dreams now as my check ride is the 13th of next month but I've been doing all of my cross country stuff solo lately to build my hours. Cars are a blast but flying takes it to the next level. I am so sick of blowing thousands each month renting planes that I am truly thinking about buying my first plane now and maybe even selling one of my cars to help pay for it!

Micah, you should build a clone of the Flintstones' helicopter. Emissions free, and a great workout for your legs. Oh wait! Maybe you are too young to know what I'm talking about? Google it! 😂

Helicopters are safer than airplanes if flown like airplanes. The reason the helicopter is considered more dangerous is because of how it is used, close to obstacles and in confined spaces.
