Magical indeed, well played on a lovely harpsichord.
    And meantone means character :)

Thanks Ralph! Meantone means character indeed, even with this 'milder' 1/6 comma. This piece would sound even more spicy in 1/4 comma meantone!

    Nice, a harpsichord video :)
Good playing and nice instrument! I like the temperament
I will upload a video with a performance on harpsichord too in a while.

Thanks Luuk! It's a good temperament for most late 17th century music, I find. Looking forward to your harpsichord video :-)

WOW - what a beautiful sound of this harpsichord (yours? after who the replica?) and beautiful paintings! The same goes to the piece and its performance. By the way, is it only my imagination or you feel most at ease near the harpsichord, even more than the clavichord or the piano?

Thank you Riva! The harpsichord is not an exact replica, but built according to the English tradition and closely based on a 1709 harpsichord by Thomas Barton (in Edinburgh Univ. Collec.) and a c.1715 spinet by 'Keene and Brackley'. The paintings are closely based on another English instrument, the 'Coston Harpsichord' (in Edinburgh Univ. Collec.). You can find more info on Peter's website (description box).
Am I more at ease at the harpsichord? It depends on the day, what I play, how well I know the piece etc.. Generally speaking yes, I can get more easily 'in the zone' with it vs the clavichord (notoriously the most difficult keyboard to manage!). The piano equals the harpsichord once I know the piece very well. I often post here pieces well before they are at a thorough level of understanding. This ground is an 'old acquaintance' 🙃

Very nice harpsichord. Is it a new toy?

Its the same melody as Crown the Altar!

I guess it could be a transcribed keyboard version of it or the keyboard idea that originated it.
