  • I am continuing to try and help out my neighbor with his '66 BMW R60/2 in the hopes of helping him clear a few projects out. I'm an amateur mechanic and a bit of a hack, but I like to help people as I am able as well as working on my own projects. In this video I am trying to figure out why I keep having loss of power issues when running uphill. ‪@The_Bearded_Mechanic‬ and ‪@BrickHouseBuilds‬ I love the stuff you do and would appreciate it if you have any thoughts about what I might be missing or what could be causing this strange behavior (Craig - in a way I feel like this is your fault for inspiring me to try and get back in the shop and work on projects like this 😏).
The work I've done so far is to set the timing, go through the front brakes, rebuilt the carbs, got the headlight and turn signal working, and made some better connectors for the battery. Some of these things I've done multiple times. There was some weirdness with "lever tops" on the carbs (if you push the tickler all the way down, it forces the float clip to out of the groove and too far down - that took longer than I care to admit to figure out) and a lot of things have been done and done again. I'm hoping it just works from here on out, but will have to wait for the next break in the rain to find out.
If you like what I'm doing, and are so inclined to help, I'm gratefully accepting it at buymeacoffee.c...
    Cheers from Seattle

Lovely bike Frank has! That is definitely frustrating when a problem keeps arising but I really applaud the consistency of the testing along with the footage to capture it acting up! If only every diag job was like that... As for what it may be doing, it seems you (possibly) ruled out fuel flow, valve clearance, plug wires, poor connections, and more so thats good. I am really not well versed in BMWs but question what the coils are like and if they are waste spark. A coil getting hot and dropping is always a possibility. You could confirm this by swapping leads and seeing if the right cylinder drops. Another point of concern are the fuel filters preventing adequate flow. I have had many bad filters of that style in the last couple years causing similar issues as they barely flow anything. Having the bike under load going up the hill would be enough to drain the bowl where level ground may not have the same consumption therefore just barely getting enough flow to sustain it. My friend @nathankostelecky may be much better help as he is far more knowledgeable on these bikes. I hope you get it sorted!

Thanks so much for getting back to me! I would be giving myself too much credit to say I've figured it out, but I can say it's working now 😊! I was about ready to throw in the towel and decided to try "one more thing" (which somewhat stupidly turned into three things so I don't know which worked). I double checked valve clearances, realized I had made a slight error when adjusting before and reset them (very small adjustment), then I disconnected the battery (to run only on magneto in case lighting wiring was shorting somewhere), and I fiddled with mix & idle screws on the carbs a little bit more. It worked! I tried hooking the battery back up. It still worked! I let it sit for a couple days, started it and ran it 3-4 miles to the gas station and it worked! So I rode it to the VME winter motorcycle show to show it off 😊.
