Use to be that the engineers draftsmen and upper managers started on the assembly line, and they worked their way up the ladder. They knew the complete process inside and out. They knew how to fix real world snafus on new products. But some where along the way, they decided to hire a kid ,snot nosed no street smarts right out of college for next to nothing, making design decisions, for cost cutting. And of course the old timers couldnt get along with morons like that, and probably got tired real quick of bailing them out when the blueprints were wrong, ect. My only complaint about new cars is they have too much high tech crap that we don't need. Otherwise the GM cars of 2018 are awesome. The Impala, for example, is just as nice as it was in the 60s, but people don't know it because they have been trained to think Toyota is better.

strongly disagree with that last statement...."trained to think Toyota is better."?? No. Toyota was more focused driven then GM. GM was very complacence and had way too many brands and models, also models that were just re-badge models as well. Which didn't help the consumer much in selecting which vehicle to purchase also GM quality was terrible in the 80's-90's compared to other Japanese car manufactures... especially Toyota. Ill agree that GM now have be producing better quality cars But they are a little too late to the game now. They should have changed this mentality 20-30 years ago.

The problems with modern cars and pickups is half the dammed things are made out of plastic, recycled materals, low quaility parts made in China and enough electronics in them to run an aircraft carrier. No one can service or repair their own car anymore, you have to trust a dealer or a local jackwagon mechanic that may not have the thousands dollars of equipment needed to repair them. That's Right way back in the 1980's. GM Closed Down Buick City in Flint, MI and Poisoned the Water thru the Flint, River Contamination!
Bought a custom ordered '67 GTO. Rewarded with liars, cheats, and incompetents. Fully agree with those claiming GM committed suicide. Pontiac and GM got what its management and unions earned. Darn shame. Did not have to happen.
GM,,, massive legacy costs
Yup.. this single biggest reason they build garbage to this day. They can't compete with non-unionized companies like Toyota because they're paying people $65 an hour for a job that's worth $30-35 an hour.
I'll still only buy American made cars and my entire family is like that both parents and in law's and 14 kids been raised that way along with 63 nieces and nephews
GM's is not American made it China made
The problem with GM at that time was that they still thought they were the GM of old which clearly they weren't. They kept selling rebadged garbage and expected everyone to get in line. Well people began to notice those faults that GM had and went on to other companies and is the main reason imported cars started to sell more.
I was a diehard Chevy fan since I was little. Then I bought a new truck in ‘98 that was the worst vehicle I ever had. Constant electrical problems , try to recline the seat and the whole mechanism would break off. It had so many problems but the dealer wouldn’t buy it back or give me a new one. It left such a bad taste in my mouth that I haven’t dared buy another GM product since. So sad since Chevy used to be an American icon.
Had a Chevy Impala.... White with the rear wing factory aluminum 5 spoke wheels Seems like they added an extra layer of clear coat...Never had to wax it. Beautiful.. Had my transmission rebuilt 3 times. You know its bad when the transmission guy knows why you 're there without opening up your mouth. And he's so courteous to say Ooooh, l get these all the time . Had it 11 years and l was not hard on my trans.
The lmpala was a 2005 !
50s 60s best years for the US manufacturing, hold your head up, you made some great stuff, 69 corvette,
New designs have an aggressive look to them that is off-putting. The '69 Camaro looks much better than the new version.
I owned a 77 Malibu ! Never again!! I'm glad they are in trouble! We waisted the money we spent on their bankruptcies!
you hater a lot of people are getting fired for Christmas because of trump
@@bobleroy1924 I didn't fire them Bob! I feel for their children. They will get several weeks seperation and be eligible for unemployment. I currently live on less than $1300 hundred a month so keep your mouth off me!!
so they don't have their jobs anymore, fired sounds like a bright future on unemployment great more people we have to feed on food stamps and welfare I know people that live on less a mth
@@bobleroy1924 IT AIN'T MY FAULT!!! BLAME SOMEBODY ELSE!! TRY GM GRUBY MANAGEMENT!! TRY TRUMP!! TRY PISS PORE CONSTRUCTION OF CARS I HAD ONE COST ME $ 5,300 TO KEEP IT GOING FOR 4 YRS.
I AIN'T GOING TO BUY ANY MORE OF THEIR SHIT!! GET OFF MY ASS!! IF YOU WANT TO COVER THEIR ASS YOU BUY THEIR CRAPPY CARS!!
@@bobleroy1924 It is the producers job to produce something that the consumer wishes to consume, not the consumers job to support a company that produces inferior products. GM failed to provide quality products for a long time and they are suffering because of it. The only reason they are still alive is because of their billion dollar bailout which is essentially the corporate equivalent of food stamps and welfare. I've known car companies that live on less.
GM killed itself with what's called complacency laziness mismanagement inferior products lousy designs.
I bought a Chevy Equinox but I heard a lot of bad things about it, like the transmission will fail prematurely and they burn oil.
Now 10 years later, GM is trying their best to make better cars than what they’ve made back in the 2000’s. But they’re not as good as Ford, in my opinion. Same goes to Chrysler (FCA or whatever you want to call it) as well.
In 20 years when people talk about America cars, its going to be Tesla!
Pensioners and unions killed GM made them unable to compete without raising cost of cars at dealerships witch would make them too much to purchase, if GM had no union it would make it easier to direct funds into developing better products not more money for union benefits and all
It thrills me to no end, all I can say is " WELL BYE "
To answer the question...NO!
GM quality was gone decades ago. Not my brand.
It is like asking "Who killed the British automobile industry?"
Only thing is nowadays its proobably worse.
GM took a page out of Fords playbook now there cars last as long, cheap wiring harness has killed GM
Poor leadership gave Toyota and Honda millions of GM customers!
Asians pay attention to detail.
Crackheads in Detroit can only make babies.
Majority owners that don’t have a say in anything. What happened was that they forgot about the customer. Greed by the union and agreed by the upper management. That’s why Toyota would always be the better company.
Does anyone have the answer?
Almost 65% of the sports cars sold throughout the world are Ford Mustangs... I will stick with my Mustangs.
I owned 3 mustangs in my lifetime.. Pure Junk.
Where is the rest of the video please? A part two?
I wouldn't miss them at all.
Seeing the beginning still makes me wonder. When will car companies make good looking cars like this again? Today you only see a car into getting in and out of then anything else.
Years of making junk has killed them!Next time they need a bailout shut them down!
Paying people way to much money and charging to much for vehicles and government bail out. Plus CEO making way to much money. Plus the drunks and drug addicts that work there and treatment paid for from GM and get job back and do it again and again and again...
Right exactly right my mother's brother-in-law was a maintenance man at the Kansas City GM plant his whole life until he died a few years ago and he bragged about being drunk on the job everyday while at work and since he was Union GM couldn't fire him. SO, FUCK GM.😂🤣😃😃😄😃🤣😂😂
I beg to differ with the Corvettes. The classics are awesome but that yellow C6 gave me a chub.
In 1989, I bought 2 new cars.
Chevrolet Caprice, and Honda accord for my wife.
Chevy had to go back to dealer 6 times within first month.
Honda never, except for oil changes.
End of story
John, So, what is your point? End of question, so Schram!
GM didn’t ask the customer what they wanted, they TOLD them what they were going to get. Wrong people making important decisions. And when that didn’t work, blame it on the unions. No, it’s GM styling and management
I gave up on General Motors years ago after quality issues and unnecessary repair issues that caused me to spend thousands of unnecessary dollars....no more, now it’s all about the Honda Accord for me and GM, for all I care, could disappear into receivership and I wouldn’t bat an eyelash!
Lets see how many people know what they are commenting on here:
GM's EMD.
GM's futuristic and spectacular exhibit at the 1964 Worlds Fair.
Not even The 1967 impala from Supernatural got mentioned
I have a 2007 OpelGT and it turns heads just like that Corvette. Any Camaro SS also turns heads. The people of PBS just want to toss shade at the midwest.
chevy needs to come out of the gm man otherwise world will lose another great brand
And Chevy Chase needs to come out of the closet.
The little car company that nobody wanted after WW2 is now the biggest carmaker in the world! VW and Toyota are virtually neck to neck with VW with a slight edge to VW due to Chinese sales.
they should learn from them
not just Chinese sales, Chinese VW factories.
I’d never buy another. Too many quality options now,
Generally crappy Motors
They forgot to mention Blood in Blood out chase seen with a GTO
Unions and the perpetual pressure for more and more and the reluctance of the corporation to settle for less profit to keep their wealth and investors happy . The intersection of the two is the breaking point called greed which leads to failure . Everyone wanted to win in which case everyone lost . 🇺🇸
Excellent.
My only complaint about new cars is they have too much high tech crap that we don't need. Otherwise the GM cars of 2018 are awesome. The Impala, for example, is just as nice as it was in the 60s, but people don't know it because they have been trained to think Toyota is better.
You're right about the impala. It IS as good as it was in the 60s. You know, half a century ago? That's kinda the problem. It's not up to par with something from this century.
moonbeamskies , Yes take all the fancy electronics out of my car take all the electronics out of my washer and dryer all I want is a good simple machine, that can be repaired
@@clroger4 Those fancy electronics make the car easier to repair, not harder.
All modern cars are full of electronic s. And many European cars are not worth owning after the warranty has expired. All the big companies don't wont people in old cars. Planned obsolescence.
Don't no why they have hoods wen it stops junk it. Volvos Mercedes they have all gone down that line. Second owner gets well and truly screwed!
strongly disagree with that last statement...."trained to think Toyota is better."?? No. Toyota was more focused driven then GM.
GM was very complacence and had way too many brands and models, also models that were just re-badge models as well. Which didn't help the consumer much in selecting which vehicle to purchase
also GM quality was terrible in the 80's-90's compared to other Japanese car manufactures... especially Toyota.
Ill agree that GM now have be producing better quality cars But they are a little too late to the game now. They should have changed this mentality 20-30 years ago.
Who killed General Motors? It's General Motors itself.
GM wil survive
If this is Part 1, then where is Part 2,..3 etc?
If anyone did write a song about a Volvo, it would put listeners to sleep!
True, but I bet little red corvette would sound great on the Harman Kardon sound system you can get in a Volvo.
@@kayEnt3rtainm3nt Can't argue with that
I really love General Motors
Gmail no longer an American company
I used to love GM, then I went Japanese and never looked back, can’t even stand it now when I see people buying expensive GMC and Chevy trucks, fools. I think the same about the other American brands too
I love new Camaro and Corvette
Just like Washington...GM has NO leadership abilities..Management is the problems with General Motors..WHO changes design, quality, production, supervisors, lead people. WHO has the responsibility to listen to the general public ?, the line workers ?..Who decides just what improvements will be incorporated into each vehicle...MANAGEMENT..At SATURN labor was allowed to input ideas into the vehicle..WELL it worked..OOOOPS management did not like that at all..result kill Saturn..
MultiCodger . I'm sorry but the Saturn cars were always shit. It never turned a profit for GM for the entire 25 years those cars were made.
Instead of axeing olds they should have axed Saturn
@@BroccoliBeefed Never knew that.
kiana149; I wouldn't own a Saturn if it was given to me. Besides, the engines in Saturns were from Honda.
very simple answer: the Asian car companies finished with GM in the USA.
Heres your answer : Japanese Cars.
GREED!
Since we the taxpayers are the majority owner of GM, they should be selling us their vehicles at a mega huge discount.
Thats not the jewish way.
Since y’all want to be apart of the January 6 shxt so bad I’m going to NEVER EVER PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM YOU! U should have stayed out of it!! Tf are u thinking putting that commercial out there!? U guys are sick af
Front wheel drive sucks, they are so cpmpact under the hood you can even do a simple repair like replacing a belt. They are very overpriced because of all the electronics and technology in them.
General Motors executives, General Motors accountants General Motors shareholders, in that order. It's easy to blame the unions/workers for GM's problems, but the employees aren't the ones running the company are they ? Makes you wonder why Saturn/Oldsmobile/Pontiac went out like they did, poor management at the top at GM caused those failures, the accountants and shareholders didn't help matters, it was all about greed...........
Colonel Mustard, of course.
GM repaid the loan - right?
No. Not completely... We as taxpayers lost over a billion on the deal.
Unions and Self inflicted
