  • My experience over 30 years and posting hundreds of puppies' ears boiled down into one 22-minute tutorial. Just the basics ma'am! Learn how to measure for posts, supplies needed, making posts, making a bridge, cleaning ears (with anatomic models for added clarity), posting, and how to remove the tape/posts without pain or pulling off your puppy's hair. If you just need a refresher for a particular part, you can find the time-stamped chapters below. If you have questions, feel free to leave them in the remarks and I will try to address them.
    If you disapprove of cropping, I celebrate your right to choose for your dog. As a Preservation Breeder of over 35 AKC Champion Dobermans, I choose to continue the tradition established by Louie Dobermann based on the original purpose of the Breed. Negative comments about cropping will be removed. The purpose of this forum is to gather together to celebrate our mutual love for this Breed, not divide us over differing personal beliefs.
    My appreciation to Kay Backues DVM for her insight and use of photo of the puppy with ears crossed over the head (timestamp 15:15).

      Yes, once the edges are healed, this is the method I use until the ears are finished. I might make minor adjustments based on their progress, but it is still this foundation. If you have any problems let me know and I can try to find someone experienced in your area to help you.

      Ahh, thanks so much. His ears are still healing. This Sat will be 2 full weeks. It's healing well. But, I want to make sure they heal before I start. Will that hurt in the posing process, by letting the ears stay down to heal? Also, There's a slight little curl on one of the ears, but I've done absolutely nothing other than clean them daily. Not sure, I'm hoping It'll fix itself, when I start posting. I'm in Toronto. Anyway, you could connect me with someone who knows, I'd be forever grateful. Thanks very much. @@TheDobermanWay

    • @TheDobermanWay
      @TheDobermanWay  4 месяца назад

      The curl is from the tissue contracting and healing. You may notice little puckers along the rest of the edge- this is the same thing. To correct this, the scar tissue along that healing edge needs to be gently stretched.
      Until the edges are healed, 2-3 times a day, massage and stretch the ears. Start at the base of the ear, massaging with your finger pads (not tips) and work your way to the tip, massaging and stretching as you go. When you have reach the end of the tip, hold the stretch, particularly adding a slight increase in pull for the curled area. Hold the stretch for about 5 seconds and repeat the massage/stretch another two reps. Neither the massage nor the stretch should be painful- if it is, ease off until it is comfortable for the puppy. By the time you are ready to post the curl should be mostly gone.

      Excellent video. Every single step slowly explained and well filmed (even if it went out of focus a few times 😊). I had been using duct tape to harden the posts instead of the zip tie, but I might just go with the ties from now on. And nice tip on the pool noodle for the bridge, I was just using another piece of taped backer rod.
      The one detail that most people and even vets don’t do properly is the tape that goes over the top of the tip of the ears. Most people will go around the ear which is not preferable, and it could mean loss of blood circulation to the top of the ears. Going over the top is the right way to go. Again, this is top 3 videos online on how to post. For a beginner, this is the way to go. The only thing I would recommend is to have a second person to help you if your puppy is brand new to this. They usually aren’t as submissive at the beginning. Also, try to do the ears when they are tired and ready for sleep. Otherwise you’ll be getting nipped left and right 🤣

      Hi Sarah, my rule of thumb is for the first 2 months the ears go immediately back up. After that you can start playing with having them unposted for a few minutes to a few hours- providing that they don't start drooping or breaking over. You don't want to lose any ground you've made.

    This video is so helpful! Curious roughly when you start testing to see if your done posting? you mentioned 2 months…is that when you start to see if you’re done posting? Our dobe was cropped at 8 weeks and we’ve been posting him since he healed and he’s 4 months old now. We’ve had to give him a day or two for a sore he was developing and his ears were standing the whole time…does that mean we can be done as long as they don’t droop, or should we keep it up another few months?

    • @TheDobermanWay
      @TheDobermanWay  Год назад +5

      Hi Katie, when Dobermans start teething, you often find that the ears have a setback. To be on the safe side, I would continue to post weekly until 6 months when teething finishes. Up until 6 months of age, if the ears are standing great when you do your weekly unwrap, then I would start letting them "air out" for an increasing amount of time. For example, the first week I might do 4 hours, the 6 hours the next week, 8 the following week and so on. If at any time during the airing out (or after 6 months when you think you are done posting) you start to see the ears tip, lean, wilt or outright break over, get them right back up on posts.
      I hope that helps. Best of luck with your boy!

    Thank you for the detail in the video. ! I have a quick question when my pup shakes her head the rods pop out the bell of her ear what do I need to do differently or is this normal?

    • @TheDobermanWay
      @TheDobermanWay  5 месяцев назад +3

      This can happen if the rod is not pushed down far enough, or if the bell is very shallow due to the crop.
      If it is due to the latter, I would start by using the smaller diameter, 3/8" rod instead of the 1/2 to 5/8". I once had a litter with bells so shallow that I had to use drinking starws as the starter posts in order to get something small enough in diameter to stay in the bells (a couple of weeks later, as the puppies grew, I was able to graduate to the 3/8" rod, then then eventually to the 1/2".)
      If decreasing the post diameter doesn't do the trick, please let me know and I'll go over with you the next option.

      Yes, as soon as the sutures are out and all the edges are healed. If you post prior to the edges being healed, those areas will fester under the tape.

    • @TheDobermanWay
      @TheDobermanWay  6 месяцев назад +1

      When I was taught 30+ years ago, it was to go with the fold. Over the past few years it became apparent to me that doing so was exacerbating the pockets, causing the ears to cross. In the final product, the fold is still there.

    Do you use a bridge for the full posting period, or do you leave off after the puppy has built up muscle strength in the ear? My 4.5 month old pup's ears are slightly tilted in (I need to work on the pocket), but she's able to hold the ears upright without issue without the bridge.
    Also - love your content, please keep it up!

    • @TheDobermanWay
      @TheDobermanWay  Год назад

      Micki, with the ears tilting in, I would suggest you do use a wide bridge- making it wide enough to actually tilt the ears slightly out to help compensate. This, added to addressing the pockets, should help rectify the carriage.

    I love this video! I'm getting my doberman pup soon and I want to be as prepared as possible for when she gets here. Her ears will already be cropped and the edges will be healed before she leaves the breeder thankfully. I'm still wondering if you use the bridge for the entire duration of posting, or if it's only for the first few weeks. Also, I've heard some people leave the ears unposted for a day or two to allow them to "air out" is this necessary, or should the ears only be down for as long as it takes for them to dry after cleaning them? I know it's tedious work, but the end result is looks so worth it. Dobermans are the best!!

    • @TheDobermanWay
      @TheDobermanWay  11 месяцев назад +3

      Oh Jennifer, how exciting! I'm so glad to hear that your breeder will be cropping and not letting the puppy go until the edges are healed. This is generally a sign of a very responsible breeder :-)
      Let's first talk about the airing out. If all is well with the ears when you take them down (no goop, no sores, no infection or infectious smell) then I gently clean them, and as soon as they are dry, I post them right back up. If they do have any of the mentioned boo-boos, then I will clean them, treat them as needed and let them air as long as necessary- that might be one day or a few days. The longer the ears are down between postings, the more ground you lose in what you have gained. But it is better to lose some ground than try to post while the ears are not healthy, which will only aggravate the issue. And BTW, if your puppy's posted ears get wet, take them down and make sure they are throughly dry before reposting. Wet tape can trap moisture underneath, leading to infection and necrosis.
      As for the bridge...keep in mind that this is for my line of puppies. Other lines cropped by other veterinarians may be different in when they are ready. Around 4.5 months of age I start leaving the ears down for perhaps half a day before reposting. If the ears are still standing straight up at reposting, then next time I'll leave them down for a full day. If the ears are still standing straight up at reposting, then the next time I'll air them for a day and a half, and so on. If at any time the ears start angling out, drooping, etc., I put them right back up and will not air them that long the next time. When I see that the ears can stay straight up for a full day between postings, I will start replacing the solid bridge with either a "soft" tape bridge or eliminate the bridge altogether. Again, if I see any evidence of back sliding on my progress, I'll go back to the solid bridge.
      Thanks so much for watching and best wishes for your new puppy!

      Hi there! I finally got my puppy and she’s perfect! She’s been here for just over a week and I implemented your posting method about 5 days ago. I know it’s hard to diagnose through this comment section, but I noticed she has bumps developing on the top of her head and where her ear meets her head. The bumps are kind of crusty and they are in her fur and it seems like a skin irritation. It’s limited to her head and a little bit of her ears so I’m sure it’s related to posting. I’m using all of the products you linked and I’m wondering if you’ve ever experienced this before?

    • @TheDobermanWay
      @TheDobermanWay  6 месяцев назад +1

      You don't HAVE to use the zip tie, but if it is the heavy duty type I recommend, it will keep the caulking rod straighter- preventing it from curling or otherwise being bent during play, scratching, rubbing, etc.
      You will initially start by beginning to insert the rod into the bell of the ear with the tie towards the ear. Twist the rod as you continue to seat the rod down into the bell (think as if screwing a cork down into a bottle) until the tie is then facing away from the ear.

      Hi Duncan, there are so many factors in play with ear crops that it is impossible to give you a time frame. The ear set, length of crop, style of crop, thickness of the ear leather, degree of ear pocket and persistence of the ear poster all play into the equation. Some dogs are done by 5 months old, while others may still be posting at 1 year old.
      What I do is after posting for 3 months straight with no down time (just take down and put right bCk up), I will take them down and let them air for 4 hours, then back up. The following week I add another 4 hours, and so on. If at any point during the airing out the ears start to droop, slant or break over, put them back up immediately and do not air out between postings for the following 4 weeks. Then start the airing out periods again at 4 hours.
      I hope this helps! Congratulations on joining the Doberman family!

    • @TheDobermanWay

      Elias, if you are asking if it is too late to crop a Doberman at 3 months, yes it is. The typical window for Dobermans to be cropped is 8 to 10 weeks. Sometimes you can get by with 12 weeks but that's pushing it. Of course, all cropping should be done under a Veterinarian's supervision and proper anesthesia. I hope that answered your question. Thanks for watching the channel!

    I recently got my very first Doberman at 8 weeks. At 9 1/2 weeks, when her ears were healed, i began posting the way the breeder showed me. 4 days later, when I went to change it, her ears had sores and were completely infected. Luckily she was already on antibiotics for a UTI. I waited over a week for them to completely heal. Needless to say we lost a lot of progress and her ears were at a 90° angle. Luckily i found your video and I am now doing it your way. She is 11 weeks now and i just started posting again. I have many questions...
    1) Will I still be able to correct her ears since she's still so young?
    2) how long do you recommend I post for now that I've had to start over?
    3) how many weeks do you bridge for?
    4) How long do you do the goal post plus a little? When do you switch to just the goal post?
    5) the powder you recommend comes out a lot, real fast with one squeeze. Can I cover to top of the ear with a paper towel and do the power before the glue so it doesn't get all over the glue?
    Sorry for the plethora of questions and thanks in advance for the answers 🙂

      Hi Laura, I'm sorry you and your puppy had such a bad experience 😔
      1. Because she is so young, you should be just fine! Just be persistent!
      2. - 4. Look in these comments for one from Jennifer md3dr, and my response to it. I think that will answer these three questions.
      5. The powder can make a mess! Yes, you can definitely put it in prior to applying the glue. You can also use a piece of tape to cover all but a couple of the powder holes.
      Thanks so much for watching! Best wishes with your puppy!

      @@TheDobermanWay so now I'm at a loss and completely discouraged. I followed your video, step by step... Washed my hands, cleaned her ears, did the post and the next day I noticed the tape was wet from the bell of the ear up about two inches. When I took the post out... It's all infected on the inside of the ear. (Not on the top of the ear where it was infected and completely healed from the last posting technique). I literally only had the post in one day. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. She kept shaking her head and scratching at the post while it was in. I tried stopping her and distracting her so she wouldn't scratch it. It appears that the backer rod rubbed the inside of the ear raw... Maybe from shaking her head. What am I doing wrong? I'm going to have to once again keep her post free until she heals.😭

    • @TheDobermanWay
      @TheDobermanWay  10 месяцев назад

      Take a breath Laura, we'll get through this! Occasionally you'll have puppies that simply can't tolerate having a post down in the bell, due to a sensitivity to the adhesive in the tape.
      In this case, you can start the posts just high enough that the bottom of the post does not touch the rim of the bell. Because this kind of posting is less stable, it will be vital that 1. You use the Torbot glue and 2. You use a solid bridge like the pool noodle in the video.
      Also, I'm sure you're using the white athletic tape for the rods and posting, but I wanted to make sure. Some folks try to use duck tape on the rods. I find that pups tend to be far more sensitive to duck tape, so just in case you have been using it, stop and use the cloth athletic tape instead.
      If you continue to have problems after using the steps above, let me know and I'll see if I can find someone I trust for you to go to.

      @@TheDobermanWay thank you so much for getting back to me. I'm doing everything, step by step, that your video says. I ordered every product you have listed in the description. No duct tape. I will try doing the backer rod a little shorter. I think that will help bc to me it seems like it's rubbing it raw in the bell of the ear, from friction probably. I used the powder and put the cotton round at the tip like instructed, made sure the zip tie wasn't long enough to go into the bell of the ear... like you said, she must just have really sensitive ears. I think the new way you suggested should make all of the difference we need and I wouldn't have thought to do that on my own, given this is my first dobbie, so thanks a bunch for the advice!

      I was going to mention putting a humidifier in the room she spends the most time in, but you beat me to the punch! Look at the bottle of fish oil you are giving- ignore what the front claims, go to the back. See how much EPA and DHA are in each pill/squirt (note that if the recommended dose is 2 capsules/ teaspoons/squirts for example, that that EPA/DHA needs to be divided by that number of capsules/ teaspoons/squirts. When addressing dry skin, you want to aim for 4000 units of EPA/DHA daily.
      You can also try adding 1 Tablespoon coconut oil to her food daily.
      Also get a Zoom Groom ( amzn.to/3D6EFOQ ) Use it daily to loosen dry hair and flakes, and stimulate blood flow to the skin. Use it in circles all over her body to loosen and massage, then in the direction of the coat to pull the hair and flakes off. Follow up with a damp cloth to pull off the remainder. The first few days you will make the dandruff worse as you loosen it up, but stick with it.

    • @TheDobermanWay

      That's a tough one because there are so many factors at play- length of crop, style of crop, width of crop, thickness of the ear leather, persistence of the person posting, ear set, degree of ear pocket, etc.
      My dogs are given moderate show crops and are typically standing by 6 months old.
      I usually take the ears down and repost immediately until that time. Then I will take the ears down and watch them. If they start to sag/lean/curl/break-over I immediately repost them. If the bottom 2/3 of the ears are standing great, and just the tips are wavy, then I'll go to strips just for the tips. I will be making a separate video on that simple procedure.

      That being said, you'll want to check inside your puppy's ear bells to make sure there isn't any signs of sores, irritation, etc. If there is, that is likely the reason he shakes his head so much. You'll need to wait till that is cleared up before re-posting.

      Your pup may be one of the few that simply can not tolerate anything in the bell of the ear without reacting to it. I had one years ago like that.
      You can follow the same procedure but without actually inserting the post into the bell. The bottom of the post should be just above the outer rim of the bell, so the post will not rub the rim and irritate it. You will still use the cable ties to stiffen the posts, wrap and then back wrap them, use the Torbot glue. The bridge will be vital to keeping the ears upright. Since this posting won't be as secure as a normal posting, you may find that you have to repost every 4 days or so.
      If he starts to have irritation on the inside of the ear where the post is glued, let me know. Occasionally there are pups with very sensitive skin that reacts to the tape. If that happens, I can refer you to a product to create a barrier between the skin and the tape.
      Hope this helps!

      The chances of getting hos ears to stand through posting would be practically zero. You can go to an experienced ear Vet to have surgery to make them stand using an implanted splint or strings. They are pretty basic surgeries with small incisions and quick recovery. But it's not going to be worth the surgery and the money to some folks. If you decide you'd like to at least check out the cost, let me know where you live, and I'll see if I can suggest a reputable ear Vet close to you.

In your case, I would want the posted ears to be bridged at 10 and 2 (as if seen on a clock face) to over compensate for the one ear. The first time may be an hour before reposting. The next time 2-3 hours, and so on. If at any time the ears are 'airing', they start to droop, fall or break, I stop and repost immediately, and during the next 'airing', I take a step back in time. For example, if I was to a point the previous week where I was trying to 'air' the ears for 8 hours, but they started to droop before those 8 hours were up, then this week I would only let them 'air' for 4-6 hours.

      I usually only have one litter a year, and a one to two year waitlist. However, if you have a puppy already, you do not want to get another until your existing pup is at least 18 months old and is absolutely solid on its behaviors and commands. Does not chew on anything that isn't his, always comes when called, etc.
      Littermate syndrome (look it up) is legit, whether the puppies are littermates or simply a few months apart in age. You want the pups to bond with you, not become codependent on each other. And if you wait until the one you have now is at least 18 months old and solid in behaviors and commands, then your second one will follow the lead.
