you're like such a teacher i wish i had. I never had people in my life who were related to art. It's always a battle that i'm fighting on my own. I feel everything u said. Thank you for your kindness, effort and work. You're very charismatic and very relatable. It must be exhausting to create these type of quality videos. Always appreciated the way Tyler teachers. He's just really easy to understand the way he puts forth the information and shows you how to incorporate it in your art, and always has the best lessons to get you to improve way faster then you would alone.
A lot of these resonated with me, great vid! Just when I think I've gotten the hang of good habits around art making another slump will throw me right back into the doubt zone and I have to build back up again. I think your advice is very helpful for artists at any place in their journey. To those I see saying they feel like they're stagnating, it's often tough to "trust the process" but I haven't so far ever looked back at art I made a year before and not seen major growth. Keep on keepin' on!

I'm not really in that age though I realized all that too, you pointed at so many common problems and mistakes. It's true. Not going to talk much here (well, I try) but generally I see changes as a process of adaptation (I have education connected with ecology and I do science researches). Realizing our current state (knowledge, skills, etc.), we need to admit it's formed by conditions we're in. So good thing here is that if we what to change something in our life, we need to change conditions (like don't store sweets in your fridge if you intend to lose some weight, turn off the browser if you don't want to be distracted during drawing or surround yourself with stuff in that language that you're going to learn). The only thing I don't really like is comfort zone. It's a ghost created by popular psychology and, well, doesn't have scientific basement. Or in other words, they simply tell about one physiological & psychological mechanism when any living creature tends to achieve good vital conditions and familiarity, so they assure it's the reason why we don't develop ourselves. Sorry, that's bullshit :D For self-development we need good conditions supporting our aspiration and, what's more important, inner motive to move further. For example, I urge to get an art job so I'm fine dealing with some difficulties during practice. No zone deciding what I want to do.
Thank you for the motivation and tips! The discord distraction is so right on point! I was trying to get more social so I can learn from other artists and maybe even collaborate but it's so distracting at the same time! Now I have to balance trying to stay in the art community and not being too distracted by it so just looking at discord just at a certain time helps a lot! Nice relaxing music, it gave me the mood that everything is fine and there is no need to rush too much
When I clicked this I didn't think much about it I just wanted to know how to draw clouds better but after watching it through It changed my life I am gonna redo my painting and focus on the big picture I totally get absorbed into the small er details and by the end it's all a mess thanks for this video.

I find the statements of 'you need to be kind to yourself and take time to enjoy what you do and life' combined with 'you need to grind everyday and really put in all the effort you can on a regular basis' to be very conflicting. For context, I've been drawing for about 7.5 years now, and the amount of time I spend on drawing has only increased exponentially as I commit more to it. However, despite this, I never feel like I'm close to achieving any kind of happy balance with work vs. pleasure. I feel like the more I commit to art, the more time it demands. I do not know how to juggle all the plates of doing art for my social media, doing art for my paying clients, studying to improve and refine my art, and doing art for my own pleasure. It feels like an impossible balance to strike at times. I've basically stopped playing games almost entirely outside of 30 min - 1 hour of winddown on some days. I very rarely do anything but spend my entire day on drawing, yet I still feel like I'm not improving nearly fast enough to make it 'work'. I don't really disagree with anything you say in this vid its just... frustrating. To feel like you're putting in all the effort but not get the results you want.
Simply put you have to enjoy the process. It’s a message for those looking for an easy path or quick solution to be great. I am just saying you better enjoy the grind because it will consume your soul.
To be less rambly, I think a lot of my anxiety stems from doing the 'wrong' drawing. Okay, I draw everyday. I spend most of the day drawing. I get a decent amount of art done (usually). But does any of it matter? Does any of it push me towards the level I need to be? How can I even know? Does doing an hour of figure drawing warmup in the morning matter at this point? Would just spending some time drawing some skirts make a difference if I don't develop some deep complex understanding of them? And I actually progressing or just coasting by on what I already know? It feels extremely difficult to know when I'm making any kind of progress in art. I wouldn't have any problem drawing basically all day if I had some guarantee it was the 'right' drawing, that it would get me to the place I need to be to make a living, but more often it feels like stumbling in the dark.
@@veryfilthything I get that, it’s like wanting to validate the time committed to be able to measure the payoff. It’s really more a thing you will be able to really see in like 6 months or a year from a given date. And it’s true for anything th longer you do it wont necessarily be effortless but will able to tackle more subtle and complex versions of anything.

Great questions here and great points Tyler! I would add, from experience and from another one of my art mentors mouth, that the creative brain needs a certain amount of time to process what you have been teaching it, and then some more time to actually insert it into your “archives” and then some time for it to actually get absorbed before it shows up in your work. Basically he was saying that most people get frustrated because they expect immediate results but the true process takes time to be reflected in your art. Just because you don’t see it, doesn’t mean that your effort is a waste of time. It all gets tallied in your brain. It just doles out results much later, yet very predictably. As Tyler said, better focus on enjoying the process than instant gratification.
I like to draw, but my skill is not that really good but I think my most problem that I need to remove was the constant idea I want my result to be perfect ( I know it is some how a bad mindset for artist and people who like to draw) I want to remove such mindset for years but sometimes the habits kicks in time to time... I don't compare my skills to others but I use them as motivation to want my skill to improve though....
i was raised that failure is not accepted. And i still struggle with that in art because thats just not something you can cheat and skip practice. it takes pain and disciplin and thats something most of us are just nor trained to take
Im a 3D artist i hate to admit it but i developed a bad habit of putting excuses until the last moment to do things but once i start is pretty much over because i wont stop until it is done. Can be a curse or a bless but last year on university i was animating a dragon getting inside a cave for a boss battle and the second artist in the team got a mental break down and he couldnt come up with ideas to make our character looks good so the teacher literally told me drop what you are doing and finish the main character. So only 1 week ahead before the presentation i didn't sleep for 5 days but i finish it i also finish the UV's, Textures and rig and i did and idle animation pose. The conclusion i learn is i need to be under pressure to deliver the job otherwise ill be creating excuses here and there. The sad thing is if i know i have time i wont do it until im starting to feel a bit of pressure.
Even in one of the harshest years in the 21st centry for an artist to survive? I'm not talking about artistic success, I'm talking about financial success. The economy is literally dogshit for full time artists and there is also the threat of malicious AI exploitation.
AI right now is only good for concepts and stock photo alternatives. In the next few years though it is going to be difficult to get paid from art because of it. All creative and office careers may disappear.
I post AI art in art groups on Facebook and even though actual artists get my posts taken down, it’s funny when AI art gets way more likes than their mediocre art
While I respect most of what you said - I’m a game dev. I play a lot of games, but in order to do my job I need to draw/sketch/create ideas for video games. Telling people to uninstall Steam is wild because they have hundreds of gb installed to Steam (typically). If using Steam is preventing someone from creating something they need to disconnect from the pc rather than have to reinstall days worth of downloads every time they want to draw/create. Also, aseprite and blender are two things I use for game creation and they both launch through Steam. I know this is a general list but people please don’t consider this as an alternative. I highly agree with disconnecting yourself, and most everything else he says, but uninstalling Steam is wild.
They could but it's too late now. After 5 years my art is where I wanted to be yet I'm ready to just give up because of what happened. I've taken 3D instead.

I’m not an artist so I’ll give the actual harsh truth. A lot of you are very mediocre artists on top of being arrogant, crybabies. You’re too arrogant to take advice and even if you do, you’re too lazy to follow through. This man is giving the best advice in improving yourself as an artist. Listen or fall behind
Remember that AI can’t see what’s in your mind-therefore, unless it has human assistance/touch, it will never be what you truly wanted-rather, 30~60% of what you wanted. Artists have a leg up in the level of specificity that can be achieved, along with being able to express their vision as they see it accurately. Learning to become an artist is still a valuable endeavor, even in the AI era
@@ayaneagano6059 not so much.... theres no real difference, youll never make exactly what the art director wants, he always has to settle a bit, instead of your "individualistic" art creation with slight variances, he will settle with AI creation and its subtle variances (from the picture he had in his head).... Graphic design is going to the s... hole... Only few/the best will survive. As Sam Altman put it: "...The price of many kinds of labor will fall towards, pretty much zero..." We are all f... royally. Just some people still hanging on their "hope believes" :-(.
Then be the best? I dunno, I don't think artists generally are aiming to just make icons their whole career, we do it because of the challenge and because it is one of life's great pursuits to take. Being a great "x" takes a lifetime to achieve and AI will only ever be as good as the material that can be scraped up into it.
