    The best WWII film ever made. This film and Ernie Pyle's books should be required viewing and reading in every history class.

    I prefer this version to the colorized one. This is the way it was meant to be seen. Great film. Great cast.

      Colorised is bullshit from my point of view: it distorts the original and, therefore, the truth.

    A Classic.
    Robert Mitchum won an Academy Award as Best Actor for his work in this film.
    He was also terrific in "Farewell My Lovely" a movie I highly recommend.

      Actually he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor but lost out to James Dunn for playing Johnny Nolan in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Sadly, it was Mitchum's only nomination.

      @@dale1956ties ...thank you for setting that person straight. Big difference between *winning and being nominated* . I also think the award was a sentimental win because of the end of WWII and also the storyline based on Ernie Pyle, a much loved writer by all at the time who was killed in Okinawa the same year, 1945.

    Robert Mitchum was great as the young lieutenant. The close ups of his face was brilliant understated acting as more responsibilities and more decisions to make were piled up on him. You didn’t see it as much as you felt it.

    This is a really solid film. Much less optimistic than other films made during the war itself. Though it's funny how Burgess Meredith looked like an old man even in his 30's.

      Probably because this movie was made in 1945... the prop/costume departments in Hollywood didn't have any German helmets from the current time avaiable. Even in WW2 movies from 1955 you see Germans wear WW1 helmets, though even some German soldiers during WW2 got issued WW1 helmets because of shortages, so it's not completely inaccurate.

    • @danielt.coates5229
      @danielt.coates5229 7 месяцев назад

      Think also that since filming started in 44, they did not have access to the newer helmets. Also as smokeythebandit mentions here, its possible that some German soldiers were issued ww1 helmets. Also the Germans were remodeling these helmets (M-35 in 1935 and then a M-40)...apparently Hitler did not want the form of the helmet changed, possibly because of some concept of the look and continuity back to the soldier of ww1. I am glad you mentioned this peternuyten and somehow it makes me like the movie more because they really captured a mood here with what they had to work with and a location in the US but also with veterans of the Italien campaign included in the cast. Its always a bit of a jolt to see horses or mules injected into modern warfare, as if to say :kill with a modern weapon but carry home the dead on a creature from the past. I wonder if Tom Hanks studied this movie before Private Ryan. I am sure he was aware of it. There is a great book on Robert Mitchum by George Eells and it covers some of the GI Joe time. Thanks for putting this movie up and I agree it has to be seen in B&W.
