Is Suspension A Good Idea For A Trials Bike?
HTML-код

- My hero's in trials riding all seemed to run some kind of front suspension and I could never really figure out why, it's heavier, less accurate and expensive. I decided to give it a try with some borrowed Rockshox Pike DJ forks that are blatantly too long for the geometry to see what the fuss was about...I ended up getting very surprised!

Downhill fork on trials frame
@@WeekendFilmCo Sam Pilgrim style haha
Dunno if you guys gives a damn but if you are bored like me during the covid times then you can watch pretty much all of the new movies and series on instaflixxer. Have been binge watching with my brother for the last few days xD
@Zion Dakota Definitely, I have been watching on KaldroStream for since december myself :)
When I was a kid, a mullet bike was a 24” or 26” bike with a 20” BMX wheel on the front because the kid smashed up the other one and that’s all they could ‘obtain’. Legally or otherwise.
Ouh man the good old "glas in Glasgow" joke😂👌🏻
Ali, I really like your comment about trying to keep your videos family-friendly. You've surely go lots of young viewers who will look up to you and want to imitate you - glad you take that seriously. Also, like your comment about keeping your body safe to extend your riding years. Starting bike trials at 60, I really get that idea. If I can practice skills at low heights or near soft surfaces - I am all for that!
14:05 hopefully the forks dont blow up ...Lets try it again !
thx!!
Used im big slopestyle contests do you expect it to blow?
@@tonioplamio8197 1. Slopestyle contests have smooth landings.
2. It was Ali himself that said hoefully the forks dont blow up.
@@blackmetalgoat9060 it will survive tho because it is made for allot of abuse
Trials on a dirt jumper would be interesting
Yee! I want one of those, as I recently bought a Dirt Jumper, and I'm trying to learn trials on it too. It's a 24 inch. Of course I'm using two brakes.
I recently converted my Dj bike that I just bought earlier this week to a trials bike since it's pretty difficult to buy trials bike here in the Philippines. All in all it's pretty great!
what is usually size of dirt jumper??
@@5sos-dontstopthevamps-rest679 26inch
just ad a front brake
By far my favourite youtuber and rider!
I ride trials on my mtb but soon i'll buy a inspired flow 2020 and its all because of you!
keep up the good work Ali!
Up to front looks so scary i can just imagine eating the wall if to low u got skills🤙
This brings back so many memories of my early trials days here in Canada, Circa 1998 Jeff Lenosky Ryan Leech North Shore Represent 🤘
"wearing grey on a grey day"..
Except those shoes! I could see them from my flat!!!
@@Ali_Clarkson haha trudat!! haha!!
@@Ali_Clarkson I live in Glasgow and I've recently got a trials bike but I'm struggling to find good locations. Any recommendations?
nice... I remember Hans Rey always riding the GT Zaskar with a Judy SL. I still have a 26" trial bike with a judy SL and the fork was really stiff by that time :-)
Ah, Hans Rey! What a rider!
Ask Hans Rey, Jeff Lenosky or Ryan Leech. They used to ride trial with suspension fork 15-20y ago. :)
And Jeff is a giant with his almost 2m and ~100kg (as I know). :)
Finally! I wanted this kind of video for so long but never foundit, Thanks!
I love how the bike is always quiet :D
Super interesting video idea again 🙂 always excited when a notification about a new upload from you pops up
My mind is blown that Ali is my age, thought you were much younger, makes me like you even more dude ride on!
I would love to see if you can do trials on a dirt jump bike, maybe just with a lower gear ratio and high rise bars. Hopefully one day you’ll have a dirtjumper to play with haha
Would like to see it too. I have a dirt jumper but stupidly I don't jump it (just nowhere nearby really). Would be cool to see what an actual trials rider can do with one.
Maybe even motivate me to do it too, and try in an area that isn't built up or in the forest either.
I have a dirt jumper and I do trials on it :) 25t 9t WITH REAR CASSETTE AND PRESSED bb IT WORKS.
@@callummclachlan4771 DJ's have decent enough geometry that you could begin for sure. Just look at Danny on his full suspension
His balance is so good he could probably do it on a track bike.
That last spot w/ the posts and stuff in the ground was really cool... I'd even ride BMX there.
You raise my spirit to come back riding with the same setup (26" chromo frame trials with front suspension).. thanks :)
I love hearing you talk about bikes. You were always a legend rider and now I feel like I know you a little better as a person
I’m eager to see how the bike does on proper dirt jump and pump track, and techy singletrack… aside from some geometry disparities you’ve essentially transformed the bike into a dirt jumper with the 100mm squishy fork.
3 yrs ago i have a two brake dj bike that i rode trials. Twas a Da Bomb Tora Bora with Duke U turn Shocks.
Then upgraded to Sonic Boom 26", then into a rigid fork. Till now im riding a DJ-built-trials bike. The only thing with older supension models is its heavy weight and high wear and tear, but handy when doing higher drops.
Personally don't think blasphemy is family friendly but thanks for not effing and jeffing.
Dayum, you make everything look so easy! Mad props
I had forks on my t-rex for a while. Was fun!
While watching your videos I've noticed your drops are so smooth and nice and could you tell me some tips or tricks to not land so forcefully everytime I even go off a small bump. Say I drive off a sidewalk onto road, even the like 4 inch drop hurts my wrists and arse (kinda the same way you dropped down that wall at like 14:07 but its only 4 inches)
Great video! Shows that if you have skills, you can ride anything!
hey ali, another "most entertaining video of the week", but i do ave a question, why did you go back to the original sprung tensioner. I like your titantium design very much, so much indeed i had to make one for my fourplay aswell :)
Nice!!! Suspension FTW. Those hooks scared me though! I'm not doing those with mine, even though it is possible.
Ryan Leech has been running suspension for about 20 years :D
Hey Ali great vids. I've always ran front suspension (no lockout) ans my bunny hop is always lacking power seeing you experiment makes me want to switch to rigid. Could you do a vid on rigid forks for street riding? Thanks and keep up the great work!!!
What you have there is a dirt jump bike with a slightly high BB. Kind of funny because my "trials" bike is an Octane Void with a rigid 29er fork. It kills my wrists on drops, and I have often wondered about going with a 100mm DJ fork w/ 300 lbs of air.
That carbon LB rim definitely can take all the abuse. Looks like I make a good decision, just bought it.
Yes, Its good, I did that to my bike :-)
Back in the 90's when I rode trials, I never rode without a front shock on my 26" bike (which was a modified mountain bike), so it just seemed normal to me. I had a rigid fork on my 20" bike and if you didn't land right from high drop offs, you'd definitely feel it.
8:09 Nah, I like these videos because, well, I know that you're a really experienced rider, but here you are not sending the moves every time, unlike what the typical edit shows. It's far more relatable, frustrated jesus-ing included.
I used to watch extreme sports in my younger days on sky tv and used to watch drop in tv and I think a other bike programme too think ride guide mountain bike show and used to to show Ryan leech and he had suspension on his bike too but very short travel are maybe lock in ones not sure
@@Ali_Clarkson i met him a few times. really nice guy!
Next up, twin crown? xD
Awesome stuff! Keep up the good content. Nice to see how you keep pushing yourself to get it to the standard you wanted. Glasgow is very grey unfortunately when it’s wet. Which is often. 😂
I wish trials was bigger here in the us but it is a alien world to most people here every thing is special order because trials is predominantly a European sport.
maybe dh fork would be better?)))00)))0)
Great video Ali! When I first got my Hex I thought my wrist were going to break off because I was so used to suspension and as you know not very fluid. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to continue but I finally got over it in my wrists. I'm still battling tendonitis in my elbow (for like 8 months now!) which I think suspect is partly to do with me riding a rigid fork, partly sucking and partly being old. I've wondered if having a little bit of suspension would be a little easier on me. It's good to see that having front suspension didn't really make that big of difference on techniques as I thought it would. Then again, you're super human! Cheers!
Hi Ali another great film, but as far as suspension forks go I myself find them hard going but as I am fifty next month I do admit to preferring RIGID forks up front and with my hard mountain bike I pretty much ride with the forks locked and so I am thinking about swapping these out for Rigid forks instead and I also have a set of SE RACING BMX cruiser handlebars on this 29er hardtail of mine.
However I think that experimenting is always a good idea and without this we would never know if it is right or wrong.
Hey Ali! Thanks for all your content, i love watching your videos! I have a question. which Five Ten shoes do you use?
Im 36 this year and I still need to start trials riding, got as far as buying a bike to hack about into a trials bike, which was a great plan until the sister in law stole it to ride it
I'm 35, started a year ago. Track stands are better, bunny hops are higher, going up obstacles are easier. Can't rear wheel hop or do anything fancy, but time constraints and life. You can do it my friend 😉
57 and started a year ago.
Ali, any chance of you doing anymore front wheel tutorials?? Id love to see front wheel hops, fakie nose manuals or g-turns! Been trying for ages and your tutorial videos are really helpful. Great riding as always!
I have a Black Market Killswitch. Front and real short rear end suspension (100mm). I run all locked out. Allows me to keep doing this stuff at 53.
I've wanted to get a trials bike and/or a dirt jumper, would a trials bike with a fork make a bike that would be decent for both?
Martin Ashton also mentioned putting a sus fork on a tiny trials frame to do eleven foot drops in one of GMBN videos, so I guess it must be kind of a life stage for trials legends
There were also pics of him in the late 90s/2000s MBUK pieces with headshock forks occasionally.
I need to see a colab video with Ali, Danny, and Fabio
Sick video as always
Ali ist und bleibt der geilste 👍
kann er deutsch?

Try and hit up XFusion they might have what You are looking for
How much bar is in your tires? Btw interesting Video🔥
Suspension on a trials bike: a dirt jumper with fancy brakes
Not really. I say that because the geometry is totally different.
@@floob247 yeah, I know. I just think it's funny how similar the look
Love your channel! Always keepin it interesting 👌
I actually once asked Hans about this and he told me exactly what you said about the bike being more relatable. He wanted to promote mountainbiking hence he used a "normal" mtb with suspension that people could relate to.
Bike looks amazing with them forks I would keep
Can you preload the fork to help jump? 👍🇬🇧
I love your riding and try some trials style myself but I can relate to what you where saying about the style of bike. The best video for me was when you did the trials bit on your 5010. Normal trials stands far from normal mountainbiking and just a small croud looks at this. But if you go on your full sus like Akrigg then a whole lot of non trials guys get “inspired” ;-p. Keep up the good work Ali, hope you don't feel the blues to much these days.
Stg yt at the moment! I just looked and it said I was unsubbed! Been subbed for years and ofc I immediately resubscribed. Hate this algorithm
Looks like a light weight dirt jumper! I was surprised with how well it worked for you. Like you said it helps pop the front up. Would be interesting to see a fork that's abit shorter. Great test and video bud!!
Unrelated question...What is Fly Tipping? lol Saw it on the sign behind you!
Means no dumping
Awesome test. I've been a sub since you had less than 1k subs. Always thought it was crazy you didn't have more, come a long way Ali, keep up great work :)
Man, this kind of videos is amazing
Staggering skills! You're smashing 2020!
considering it's a borrowed fork you should keep in mind that the brake hose will rub on the crown thus damaging the paint.
I enjoy seeing you ride so much Ali! Love your riding style, soo smooth and clean... keep up those super sick Videos!🔥🙏🏼
Maybe look at handlebar-mounted lockouts if you end up testing another pair of forks later. Nice video!
cool vid, but what would be more interesting is fat bike tyres on a trials bike :D
Really good content you are puting out man! 👍👍
How about doing a video about geometry, pros and cons. Like to see you compare the pink and the blu 😊
*video idea* BMX bars on a trials bike
Ryan leech thought so!
Scott Edwards so did Jeff Lenoski.
@@dinohuntr851 Both legends
I don’t think you did it rigt there are forks that goes exactly straight down like normal trail Forks
blue stilten, edam, emental, greer, i love them all ,,,,,,,,sometimes they attack,,,,,,,cheeses-strikes!
I see an advantage with using those forks it would be good practice because if you can get used to that it'll be a lot easier the ride with your Ridgid forks
great video. I really want to get into trials, just basic stuff.
That's great It's so cool
It’s literally a dirt jumper
We use reverse mullet, 26 rear 24 front, on our mail delivery bikes in Australia. It allows the front load to be lower which is more stable. Been that way for nearly 30 years.
Wow it is amazing how is that
9:13 What a smooth front whel action :)
Nice video! Thank you. How about flow 22 with 20 wheels 😁
Ali, you should make a suggestion to Inspired to make a version of Hex with geo made for a suspension fork, that is more suited to street riding. Could that be a possibility please? ❤
I did and they actually made a prototype for me, sadly it wasn’t quite what I was after (head angle was too steep) so I never really rode it
@Ali_Clarkson I would definitely be interested in getting one if Inspired made one for a suspension fork. It would be a nice middle ground between dirtjump frames and the Hex. There are some DJ frames that are more suitable for trials oriented street riding but they also come with their downsides of not being designed with street trials in mind, such as not having a strong rear disc brake mount.
But I assume the bulk of their sales come from their 24 inch offerings and the Hex itself may be too niche for them to consider another model for.
You and Jeff Lenosky should do a dual vlog or somthin!!!!!!
I genuinely can't believe how well that worked!
I've also heard from one 90s pro that he originally switched to suspension to be able to ride more moto style, carrying speed and rolling more stuff. Would be interesting to hear if there's anything to that.
Can you come to Killin one day
It looks so good
how do you make your bike just spring up 3 feet in the air like that from nothing
expensive if you scrape those stantions, looks like it would be able to manage dirt jumps though.
Looks really cool, very interesting to have different ideas and mixing things up as a pose to just riding normally
Love the new helmet Ali 👌🤘🤙🤙
Interesting ...get a dropper post and your almost ready to join me on my Deliveroo shift:)
Nice vid - interesting concept.
You brought up some old school riders running front and (sometimes) rear suspension. I wonder how much of that was rider driven versus sponsors pushing new products? In Hans Rey's heyday, there wasn't the breadth of biking disciplines. Within mountain biking, it was pretty much just XC, DH, and way off to the side was trials but the bikes hadn't become nearly as distinct or specialized.
Keep it up sir!
Bringing back the Ryan leech style trials bike 👍🏻
Ali: Talk how expensive suspension forks are.
Also Ali: Rides a $3k Inspired Hex.
Me: Yeah, man, forks!!! It's all about forks! :)
he should try a downhill bike, i want to see his reaction to all that suspension
This is definitely something i needed to know as i currently have am atomlab dirt jump bike and was wondering if I just changed the frame to a trials frame what would it be like.
I'd like to know that as well.
Sad that u dont have 100k yet :/
sick video🤙👍
