- I go out to sharpen planer blades to a service shop. It always bothers me. And sharpening costs 3 $ a blade. The service man doesn't look like he is satisfied with small charge. I am unhappy too.
Couples of weeks ago I happened to watch a video related with sharpening on RUclips. Happy happy moment!! I decided to sharpen my blades myself. And now I have sharpened mine. -
Excellent workmanship! The implementation with the tools you have on hand and little consumables deserves praise.
Thanks for watching sir.
Loved that sacrificial block idea on the table saw.
Thanks for watching sir.
Amazing! So simple and easy to execute; but so ingenious at the same time. Wish I had seen this before purchasing new planer blades. Thanks!
Thanks for watching sir.
What a beautifully elegant solution!
Wow! That is just so clever! You’re brilliant!

BIG BIG THANKS to show out this trick.
Absolutely brilliant and self reliant 👏👌👍❤😀😀😀😀😀

Clever. That would work for planer / jointer blades and also for my garden shredder. Thanks for posting.

This one blew my mind man! What an awesome and great idea J.
Thanks friend.

@@j-woodworking9573 you make some of the things you do look so easy, yet I always look for seemingly easy but always expensive ways to do the same thing. You have nothing but my respect!
I have tried to sharpen a Makita planer blade like that and it sharpen excellently so thank you for the knowledge
I have had no problem with it so far. Happy to hear it gives good solution.
Thanks for watching sir.
ingenious idea with the double slots for the angled grinding!
Thanks for watching sir.
Great idea 👍
Thanks for watching sir.
suggest longer abrasive paper because in this set up the ends of the blades cut slower/less than the middle which is always on the abrasive. If the slots in the wood jig loosen with shrinkage and they may, it can be fixed with wedging a thin piece of some material to firmly hold the blades. A third groove for the third blade would be a good upgrade, so that all three blades can sharpen the same amount and be done at the same time.
Very helpful. Thank you. :)

Thanks for watching sir.
I was going to buy a new set of blades for $70 but then i found this. Must try
Thank you for video.
Thanks for watching sir.
If you make the block a little wider, then you can have three slots, that way all the blades will sharpen/wear at the same rate. As is now one blade has slightly more material removed, because you sharpen it more (it is supporting the block on the one side when you sharpen two different blades). I like this simple design.
🙏🤝🤝
If you make it very accurately, that will be perfect.

Thank you, Good job!

Tienes mi 👍 buena idea.

Nicely done & great idea J! However, I would recommend that you get a blade guard for that planer. Your fingers are way to close to that spinning blade and all it takes is one slip for disaster to occur! Just my opinion...........
Sorry about that. I'll keep it in mind.
Thanks for watching sir.
good~~

Great easy way to do this. I’m going to try it too.

@@j-woodworking9573 did the sharpening work good? Do the blades cut good? Where did to get the blade magnet tools from?
Yes, the jig works pretty well. No problem with the blades sharpened with it. I got the blade hight setting gauge at a local shop here.
@@j-woodworking9573 what is the make and model of the blade height setting gauges?

Excellent! What magnetic knife setting gig is that?

Great invention, I don't own a jointer/planer yet, but sharpening the blades looks like a chore. I wanted to comment about cutting those grooves/dados without the riving knife. I had a kickback accident with my table saw last week, the first in 5 years and I was making a cut similar to the one you did, with only 1/8 in. of the blade exposed and a riving knife attached. It hit my hip like a bullet and turned it purple. It really caught me by surprise, fortunately, the micro jig grr-ripper saved my fingers.. 😅 Now I know to stand to the side when making any riskier cuts.
Thanks for comment of your experience for us sir.
Thanks for watching.
Pretty sure you cannot make those cuts with a riving knife in place . At least not on my saw. Guessing they perform several potential functions, including keeping cut wood from closing due to stresses in the wood and grabbing the blade. Cuts like these are not thru and i am guessing are unlikely to close on the blade.
@@charlescote8391 Good point. J is a pro so I'm sure he's doing it safely. 👍 The riving knife on my saw has a position for non-thru cuts, and my zero clearance insert has an opening for the knife as well, so I never take it off unless it's a dado stack. I just wanted to share my experience as it was pretty recent and kind of unexpected. I'm also extremely careful and methodical with my work and tools. 😅
@@kahoycrafts michael...stay safe and methodical. It is best, especially around saws. Maybe i need to update my saw system.
late comment but this is a situation that reminds me of the usefulness of a good push stick which will act as a positive block to kickback objects.
👌👍👊

What was the grid for the 1st sandpaper
This is a simple solution for my problem. I have a electronic handplaner, and the blades are small. This is the why.
Thanks for watching sir.
Very smart! You should still bring the blades to be ground once in a while, if one blade is sharpened more than the others the spinning head will start to vibrate.
That is right.

What if your jointer has odd number of blades for example 3 blades, what are you going to do with the one that is left over? Make a dummy blade?
I wondered that, but you can alternate in pairs to make sure they all get the same number of strokes each, for even sharpening. Would need to mark the blades not to get them mixed up. Essential that they are all sharpened the same amount.
I sharpen two first. And I take sharpened one from the jig and put the unsharpened one in the slot again. Sharpen again.
I don't think there will be vibration because sharpening would be very very small amount.
Thanks for watching sir.
3 slots in the jig.
What manufacturer it your machine?
JET.

two slots but three blades. confident they are all sharpened evenly?
I agree with you. I sharpen two first. One of the sharpened knives and the unsharpened one second. The other one of first sharpened knives and the second sharpened one. I don't think this way of sharpening makes major problem. The amount of sharpening is pretty small.
Thanks for watching sir.
You shouldn’t tighten or undo the bolts from one end to the other...
you should alternate from one end to the other, otherwise you will bend your knives
The correct way is to work from the centre outwards, alternating left and right.
Thanks for your great solution sir.
Degree ?
This way... or get a Felder/Hammer with with Silent Power
Thanks for watching sir.
No guard when using the planer, and watch where his right hand is as the wood exits the end of the cut!! And sharpening one blade twice is not a good idea, the blades will be of balance!!!
Why can not we buy such blocks ready!!?
I can not find anything on Ebay or Ali etc..
Every hardware store should offer such blocks ready.
Then better made of plastic.
And possibly with benefits.
E.g. four adjustable wheels in the corners, which ensure an absolutely uniform grinding.
