- Jeff & Sarah take this episode of History Hunters to the historic Gold Rush era region of Calaveras County where they will delve into the stories between men buried in the 1851 Pioneer Cemetery. They will make an impromptu stop at Chili Gulch, steeped with rich 49er gold mining history. Their last stop will be to check out the historic one-room Altaville Schoolhouse, thought to be one of the last existing one-room brick schoolhouses in California.

Jeff, I like how you look at the fallen headstone of a fellow that died in 1861 and say it is sad. Your reverence of those who came before us is to be admired indeed.
Sunday morning, cup of Joe & History Hunters ... 😁
For me, a cup of tea a bowl of mush and a history lesson. Jeff always does an excellent story and we all learn how much
history has passed us by.
Yep!
Jeff and Sarah, this was so very enjoyable. The ages of many of those buried in the cemetery were in their 20s and 30s. (I realize not all deaths were the result of natural causes.) I was surprised that the veteran 🇺🇸 was buried there as late as 1987...
It was a dangerous time to live in terms of law and order. WOW
That schoolhouse looked just like the picture. They did a great job with the restoration.
Thank you one again for your thorough, always interesting and informative video.👏🤗
Kudos on the music, it fits the theme. Glad Sarah goes along to add a touch of pizazz. ( someone has to open the gate ) 😉🙂👍
Sunday morning with a cuppa Motherlode Coffee and History Hunters. Thanks again.
Inscription on a wooden grave marker:
“Here lies Lester Moore
“With four slugs from a .44.
“No Les
“No Moore.
I love the gold country. It always brings back memories of taking a school field trip to Coloma in the 4th grade. But the peaceful scenery belies the fact it could be a very dangerous place back in the day! Thanks for sharing!
I enjoyed the interesting grave stones . The hand and fingers indicating other graves were very unique. The red brick schoolhouse was charming. 🤗🤗
Glad you enjoyed the visit with us!!!
My aunt, Elizabeth Hellen, taught there for a short time till she relocated closer to the coast. 🙂
Love you guys...
Great old cemetery and a neat experience crossing a cow pasture and loved the little red brick school house. 5 star vlog.
Thanks 👍
Check out Murphys, CA. They got the haunted hotel, underground caverns and lots of wineries. It's about an hour from Modesto.
I am sure we will get there eventually! Thanks for watching!
Gold rush history is so fascinating😎😎
I think so! Glad you do too.
Thank you for taking the time to create these videos🤝🙏🔥
Love Calaveras County, and Angels Camp.
My Brother and I stopped in Angels Camp one year, on our way to Tahoe to visit another Brother. So happy to have arrived the weekend after the jumping frog contest, because I would not have been happy negotiating the crowds!
Jeff and Sarah....so glad I found your channel ! I look forward to watching at least 1 video a day when I want to relax !! I have enjoyed each and every one of them thus far ! Big history buff here ! Thank you !! ❤❤
Jeff ad Sarah keep them coming .We love what you do .
Thanks Kevin! We appreciate you watching and giving us moral support!
I haven't been up to that old graveyard in years, even though it is literally down the road from my ranch. Thanks for the tour, and thanks for making the trek up that hill, I imagine its steeper now that I'm over 50!
Wow. I have driven past this countless times. Never knew what the significance was. Thanks.
Another history lesson to enjoy☺️. God Bless you both🙏🏻
Our pleasure! God bless you too!
Thanks Jeff&Sarah for saving my Sunday afternoon
Central California Watching
Great video. I passed that cemetery many times on Highway 12 growing up in San Andreas. My dad played in the band in a dedication ceremony after the historical society had completed the renovation of that school.
I think Sarah pulls in the souls of the animals. You give us a glimpse of the souls of the Pioneers. Great team, Thumbs Up!
ruclips.net/video/uftsfC0cjcY/видео.html the white cow would get brave when I turned my back.
Love the music in this video.history hunters never disapoints.love from ireland x
Another interesting video Jeff & Sarah! Being a retired teacher, I LOVED the last little segment on the old school house. I hope the people nearby keep investing in its restoration for future generations. You always make my Sunday mornings better. ....Russell D.
Music in the background is so fitting to the beautiful country, keep them coming and thanks for the research making this video informative..
Well folks spring is here and the weather will bring happiness and adventure! Excellent show and see you next week. Stay safe and healthy! Glad to see “Side Kick Sara”❤️
Very nice, especially the schoolhouse and it having drywall screws in the shutters! Thank you, wonderful video...
Well done you two, fancenating history. Thanks 👍😊
Great Episode, love that old hidden Cemetary and also the way towards it, through these lovely Cows. On a Sidenote: Seems to me that this is the first Video of yours, where there isn´t a blue californian Sky. Thanks for the entertaining Upload. Wish you Guysb a good Week to come :)
What I wouldnt give to go back in time to 1800s california and see it in person how different it mustve been
DRY PLAIN LAND
I sure enjoy all the research you provide.---Having watched so many of the lost cemeteries in Georgia on Side Step Adventures, seeing some of California's cemeteries is a treat.---I'm guessing the Old School House is open for tours on certain days, prior to, and after the lockdown is over. A similar situation occurs here in Lompoc, with the country school that was relocated to town, and is part of the Historical Society, which also runs a pioneering family home.
Love the HD quality video. "History Hunters Sunday Edition" rocks. Keep it up.
These videos make me want to explore America. Outstanding Once again, Jeff and Sarah. Thank you and God Bless 🙏
I always enjoy Sarah's love of animals
The cows only let me love them from afar. I posted a short video of the white cow on my channel if you're curious 😁
@@HistoryHunterSarah Thank you Bean I subscribed to your channel
Campo Seco is a town with very interesting and extremely diverse history... I have been prospecting around there for many years...
Awesome. I get to see this 12 minutes after it is up...awesomeness
As a local resident, I've visited the site a few times in the last 40 years for historical reasons. Dates for school houses, hmm. Many years ago I got married in the Douglas Flat School House. It's date is 1854.
MAY I suggest another channel - Voice of North Korea, by Yeonmi Park. A young lady who was able to escape NK. Her stories of life
there compared to life in the U.S. is a real eye opener. She is so proud to be here and will show every American WHY we should be
prouder then we are, and to not trust the government fully with our lives. We take our freedom way too much for granted. Thank You
Thank you for the great history lesson. I love watching your adventures.
We really appreciate you joining us! Glad it brings you joy!
Thanks Jeff & Sarah another great video ❤️❤️i cant wait for history hunters next episode keep them coming 😀😀
Our pleasure! Thanks!
Leaning leanig, safe and secure from all alarm.Love the intro song.
It’s one of my favorite hymns.
Great Presentation on the History of Calaveras County! Local History is usually the most interesting!
My husband Derald Johnson and his brother, David Johnson and father. Bill Johnson restored the school house in the 80's beautifully. Great video thank you.
They did a superb job! Thanks for honoring us by watching this video!
You guys were in my delivery area. I once drove past a old school house that is falling apart that looked really interesting. I always wondered about that area and if there was ever any gold found.
Very cool! We were up there on a Sunday so doubt if we had a chance of bumping into you again.
Very cool, you're such a pro! Loved the "Irish feel" of this! Thanks Jeff!
Thanks so much! Maybe because it was so green?
I love stories of the Gold trail of Old California, you guys do a great job.
Thanks so very much for saying so! We appreciate your enthusiasm!
thanks again Jeff and Sarah for a cool historical video! learned alot about the area. love the Gold Rush country.
Glad you enjoyed it! We love our adventures up there! More to come!
@@jbenziggy looking forward to your next adventure!!
Very good video and nice commentary. Also enjoyed the music. Thank you Jeff and Sarah! 🇺🇸🚜👍
Awesome! Glad you liked it! I liked the music too!
Do you know there is a town under Lake Don Pedro it’s located somewhere near the moccasin point side of Don Pedro i’m too young to have visited the town but my dad did when he was a kid I can’t remember the name of it right now but I’ll find it! Jacksonville!
I couldn't remember the name either until you said it. There is still a Jackson up on Hwy. 99 but this town you're talking about is Jacksonville.
Loved the school house! Can’t imagine how many miles you put on your vehicles serving your faithful subscribers! Thanks Jeff
You take us to some of the most beautiful country in the states. Very nice videos you produce
Thank you very much!
@@jbenziggy we have a lot of history to teach and pass on dont allow this cancell culture to rob future generations of the history that made this nation what it is today.
We've been up in that little cemetery a few times. Know it very well.
Do you remember seeing the now missing headstone? I was thinking it was either stolen or buried under the dirt during a rainstorm.
Another interesting cemetery to visit is in Downiville.
Hello History Hunters, Thanks for another great video and taking time bringing back the past.
Wonderful to hear from you! Thanks very much for watching!
Thank you again for some great history- I myself lived on Goldstrike Road in San Andreas in the late '80's- lived in a home that was probably about 100 years old and took care of an old guy who had a hard rock mine in Murphys- not operational at that time due to gold prices being too low. He was I believe in his 80's back then and in his prime had traveled to places as far away as Peru working in gold mines as a dynamiter (I can't remember the nickname for them that he told me about). Had some fascinating stores about local area history.
Hey there brother, you not far from my Mom and step Dad's town they live in, only 9.4 miles which only 11 minutes from Valley Springs. I've been or should I say have seen this cemetery everytime we drive by. Always love going to Angels Camp, very small but beautiful place.
We actually went through Valley Springs and I’ve been eyeing possibly doing something on that town in the future. Thanks for watching and commenting on our video.
@@jbenziggy you welcome, I enjoy watching your videos, I learn a little piece of History each time watching your videos. Thank you for sharing and God bless, stay safe and keep your videos coming.
C. Wayne Brock California
Again thank you. Blessings from Texas
Always an enjoyable video😊 hope both of you are doing well.
We are doing fine! Thanks for asking! We wish you the best too!
This video was posted last week on my Birthday, I just love the old school building at the end of the video.🙂
Thanks again for such in depth information... another thing I like is your video driving down the road.. unlocking the gate... or when you trip or are out of breath... brings to life what Sara and you go through to bring us these History Lessons 😎
Thank you! Man, you are ripping through all of our videos! LOL. Sometime people hear me out of breath and say I must be a smoker but I absolutely have never been a smoker. I am a Valley flat-lander though who has to make an adjustment to the trips into the higher elevations! LOL! Thanks for being a great fan!
Loved the little brick schoolhouse. Interesting cemetery. Calaveras County seems to be rich in history.
Hey Jeff great video there are still a few old one room schools still here were I live I love them old schools that's a neat part of history you and sara are awesome Randy from Kentucky.
Another great video. Thank you Jeff & Sarah. 👏🏼🙏🌺
Love your films. I've been watching your older ones, the one featuring Pollardville right before this one.
Thanks very much Joe!
Lovely video and great History Thankyou both
Very cool. I just love that area and it’s history. Especially mining history.
Awesome nuggets of history! And I appreciate how you put the writing on the screen for us see and read as well! Great job!
Thanks Frank! How is the weather back East where you are?
@@jbenziggy hey Jeff, hey Sarah, everything here is good! And it’s great weather out today, it’s a sunny 63 degrees out in Philadelphia, PA! I hope it stays like that for a while because I’m tired of the cold and ready for spring time!
I hope all is well out there on the west coast and I’ll be checking in again with you guys on Sunday! Take care ya’ll!😉
Another great video to enjoy and learn. Thank You for sharing!👍
Thanks I enjoyed it. The hands pointing to the next door graves cracked me up. I searched but I did not find where you visited Matthew Kilgore Cemetery in Rancho Cordova .
Great episode Jeff, love the old school house. Hi Sarah!!! We've missed you!
Hi Daniel!
That old building you were looking at was just south of the portal of the sport hill mine which you can see from hwy 49.
I enjoyed the video of history hunters the school house Calaveras County
And grave yard see whit you dig up next time

We are doing great and hope you’re doing well too! Happy to hear that you liked this one! We appreciate you standing by us and enjoying our channel!
It never ceases to irritate me more than these selfish jerks that feel they have some right to deface these historic items, be it history markers or grave-sites. Really ticks me off! Thnx Jeff for your sincere reverence for these sites! Love HH vids! You and Sarah always do a great job!
Well said! Thanks, Chris L!
Love that school house!
Another great video and narration Jeff! Thanks for all you do!
Thanks so very much for your compliments! It’s appreciated!
Thankyou for this history lesson, not to sure where your taking me as i'm from the UK but it is so fasinating and educating. Keep up the good work. Thankyou.👍
You are very welcome! Thank you for watching!
What a glorious little school house
It is pretty cool!
cool old school house
Thank you for lovely video! My mother attended the one room schoolhouse.
You are welcome! But thank you for watching! We appreciate our audience!
Wife and I enjoyed very much. Watch out for those cows! I know you wanted to go over to that old building by the cows, But the cows were looking at you like, one move in here and we are running, who knows what direction!
Awesome ! Always love it, Always look forward to more !!
Thanks again! You rock!
Wonderful! I love to do just this kind of visit. Wish I had known about this in our CA travels. Enjoyable and thank you.
I love that area been there a few times. And as I mentioned before, love the old graveyards, Especially Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, old #3 train is a movie star
Yes indeed. I’ve been there but it’s time I do a video on Railtown 1897.
great video Jeff. you can see the white cow running at Sarah in your opening!
Thank you for pointing out the white cow following Sara. Animals know who their friends are.
I was trying to coax the white cow over for some petting but he wasn't brave enough.
I posted a video of him if you're curious.
Love the History Hunters!
Always very interesting
Look like angus steers out there. I took care of 21 of them when I was 17. In Selma, Oregon. Yes those old grave yards are all over. I found old cabins with more antiques than I could count. Nothing was ever touched for a hundred years probably. Many treasures but I never even took an old bottle. Have no idea where I was then. People died and we're buried on the spot. Found some grave stones hidden out of sight in bushes etc.
As usual another good history lesson. Was hoping Sarah would get to pet a calf.
I was hoping too. The white one showed interest in me but wouldn't come near.
Love to see you highlight Knights Ferry!
How did you miss it? We already did two shows on Knights Ferry! You can find them in our video list on our channel page.
@@jbenziggy I'll track it down
Thank You for the great video's and all the information you research and share!
We must thank you for rewarding us with your time watching!
@@jbenziggy Love your video's and wouldn't pass on any of them!

U2 are the best. Love the videos. Keep them coming please.
Thank you! Will do! We really appreciate your very nice comment, Bryan!
Love your Quest on history
I am in jamestown every weekend
As usual, very Interesting.....
Greed is a horrible thing, especially when there are no laws!
Horrible to see someone desecrated a headstone glad to see the school house wasn’t vandalized. Another great story! There is another brick school house I believe at Millerton dam/lake just North of Fresno.
