The stage design communicates the mood too. Rather than Sonic just platforming, he has to trip between breaking ground, take shortcuts by swinging on vines, and he even starts the level by straight-up leaping onto the ramp.
This stage is the opposite of Angel Island Zone. In that level, Sonic and Tails land the Tornado on the beach, and proceed through the jungle in pursuit of Knuckles, only for the whole forest to be set on fire halfway though. Here, Sonic is racing to get off the island before it gets engulfed in flames - going through the jungle to meet Amy and Tails on the shore and take off in the Tornado 2.
I feel like you haven't played Sonic 3 cause thats not exactly what happend Sonic gets to the Island Using his Super form, which then Knuckles knocks the emeralds out of him. and yes it can be assumed Tails landed the tornado offscreen cause then he arrives to the scene. Knuckles runs off with the Emeralds and they pursuit him like you said, and then the forest gets set on fire by one of Robotnik's Robots.

This song is special. I played the sonic mega collection on gamecube as a kid and when i saw the trailer for SA2B in the game, this song is what played in the trailer. That trailer made me want this game and i got it and loved playing it. Even all this time later love hearing this song!

you just beat shadow for the first time in SA2 after escaping the prison. you play your third sonic level, green forest. the objective says "escape in 8 minutes". sounds weird. you find out eggman placed down bombs everywhere in the island and the island is about to explode, then suddenly, this starts playing

So the percussion at the beginning of this version plays for an additional measure compared to the version in game. There's a reason for this and I'm sure people have taken note of it but for whatever reason I can't find anyone having mentioned it online. The in-game version was timed so that when sonic launches off at the beginning of the level, the guitar kicks in just as his feet hit the ground. It's just like in City Escape. Which is really cool! Or should be, but the way most people will play this level and remember it is when you see it in the story mode, where... the timing is thrown off completely because the music starts in the cutscene prior to the level actually starting. So that cool feeling you'd get when the music kicks in at the exact same time that control is fully relinquished to you isn't there.

So the percussion at the beginning of this version plays for an additional measure compared to the version in game. There's a reason for this and I'm sure people have taken note of it but for whatever reason I can't find anyone having mentioned it online.
The in-game version was timed so that when sonic launches off at the beginning of the level, the guitar kicks in just as his feet hit the ground. It's just like in City Escape. Which is really cool! Or should be, but the way most people will play this level and remember it is when you see it in the story mode, where... the timing is thrown off completely because the music starts in the cutscene prior to the level actually starting. So that cool feeling you'd get when the music kicks in at the exact same time that control is fully relinquished to you isn't there.
