Just having a bit of fun scrapping an old vintage tv I picked up from the side of the road, I don't see the real old ones around much so thought it might be interesting to have a look.

I almost cried when he tore up the schematics. That was the most valuable thing in the entire tv. Collectors pay good money for old schematics and blueprints.

I see too many scrappers who only value the metal inside an item, without any thought about its value to collectors. It's a near-sighted approach that makes all scrappers look bad.

@1:45 -- You do More than a "little bit"! When I look around at the amount of eWaste that just gets tossed over the the 9 miles I cover each day on my job... Multiply that by the multiple square miles I don't even visit in my small city! My Goodness! How much re-useable metals are being tossed into landfills! You are really doing a great public service!
I've been watching your various scrapping videos and you have inspired me to be more aggressive in my scrapping. I've always been a little bit of a scrapper, but no where to the degree I could have of been over the years. Recently I picked up two old tv's, one a smaller one and one that was big enough that it took every bit of two people to load. In one video you mentioned that you could scrap a tv out in two minutes if you weren't making a video, which I can easily believe since it is a pretty easy scrap. The down side is that one would sure have to be constantly finding and scrapping stuff to make any decent money. Both tv's had aluminum degaussing cables (disappointment) both inner and outer, only one ic chip, two tantalum capacitors and small yokes. Nothing much on the boards to speak of at all. What a lot of work for next to nothing.
I also picked up a water fountain and did get quite a bit of copper from that. I also scrapped 9 APC units which had some large transformers with copper that were next to impossible to get into as well as batteries that I sold. I also picked up a clothes dryer which I am going to do tomorrow, which I don't expect much from based upon videos I've seen. Fortunately this is not my primary source of income and I do have the space for storage, so I'm just going to keep at it little by little and hoard the good metals until prices increase again. Thank you for all the useful information you provide for various items that are scrapable as I'm a rookie and just learning and the videos sure help.

I had never scrapped a TV before watching you, and honestly not a lot of other stuff either. You inspired me so I found 2 tvs. One was so big it took 2 of us to get it on the truck. The other was small and easily manageable. Both tvs had aluminum degaussing cables, both inner and outer rim. The small tv had about as much copper in it as the huge one. Next a neighbor down the street had a clothes dryer on the curb which i scrapped for a total of $1.60 for the metal. I still have the switches, cast aluminum motor housing and of course the ALUMINUM motor windings. Also earlier this week I saw where someone wanted 2 satellite disc's which were already down , hauled off to the scrap yard which was on my way down the street to scrap the dryer metal. I pulled off the lot to an empty lot and quickly too off the cone part of the satellite which I discovered when I got home had 3 gold boards. Solid gold used plating on the back and all across the front side. My first real gold find and I was thrilled. The other small satellite disc had such a small and muddy cone interior i haven't taken the time to look. While I was getting the satellite disc's I was offered a motor which i graciously took and then the next think you know,, the business next door asked me if I was hauling stuff off and gave me a relatively new evaporative cooling fan (cool space) brand, which i looked up and new with shipping and tax was around $1,900. It works perfectly.
Right before watching your tv video i firmed up a 40 big box tv haul from a school which I am getting up bright and early Monday morning to grab those into my truck and trailer. I sure hope I don't run into more aluminum degaussing cables. I am going to keep track on how many have them and how many don't.
This is not my main income, but I like it. Im so appreciative of all your videos which have given me the knowledge to do it and to know what to look for.

thanks for teaching me a lot, Ben. i’m a glassblower and i electroplate a lot of copper onto my work. since subscribing to your fun channel, i’ve been scrapping and applying your bar casting techniques to produce my electroplating annodes.
There’s an additional revenue stream available to you in the TVs- the glass gun mounts inside the bit you were referring to around 31:30. there’s been quite the revolution in the last 10 years in borosilicate glass arts, and those gun mounts are worth $20 USD and more a pound, and you’ll find an ounce or two in each TV. the gun mounts are no longer made, and are sought after by the many artists nowadays who create their own batches of glass rod and tube.
here’s my technique for harvesting them out in the wild- in the top is the tip off (where the hollow glass was finally closed off) usually protected within an outer glass tube/collar. insert a finishing nail that fits the protective tube, and give it progessively harder taps, until you hear the air hissing, going in and filling the tube. then i score around about 1/3 the base of the tube that contains the guns with a lampworker’s scoring knife (mine is a piece of tungsten carbide, 4x6mm rectangular stock, mounted in an aluminum handle). wet the score line, and brush a small amount of fire on one end of the score line (i use a butane creme brûlée torch). it will crack and can be pulled off. (may require a slight side tapping) the extra tools- nail, tapper, scoring knife and torch- are a bit fussy out in the street, but the harvesting process should take less than a minute.
there will be a small amount of further processing at home- wrap with a paper bag or two, and tap it with a hammer to smash it open. it doesn’t really matter if you break the gun mounts, artists just want to re-melt them anyway. then just sort out the colored glass... there’s some weird stuff going on in there. sorry for rambling, this should have been a video- thanks, Ben!
if scoring the glass seems scary, simply apply your safety squints -or actual safety glasses- and a kevlar (“cut proof”) glove.
The blue aluminum wire is awesome. I have never seen it before. I have done dozens of tv's and I have never been shocked either!

Scrapped an odd curved screen sony crt today. Had never seen one like it before. Thickest degauzing cable I'd ever seen. Will go as heavy gauge bare bright. It probably cost a fortune in it's day and weighed more than any tv I'd ever lifted lol

I know a guy who made a "fish TV" by putting a gorgeous aquarium inside the wooden cabinet from an old TV like this one.
I have scrapped about 5-6000 crt tv,s and never shocked until last summer was in a hurry and cut all wires coming off the fly back and then got bit. It only happened when I got careless
I've done a couple hundred TV's, and have gotten around 20% aluminum cables, but I've never been shocked
That tv would have complimented my 1970 Chevy Longhorn ;)

When colour tv's came to Australia, many tv repairmen nearly went broke because they rarely broke down.

In all seriousness I've done a couple of hundred tv's and I don't always cut the wire every time and I've never been shocked. Also I've only had 2 that had aluminum degausing cables in them too!!! Great video Ben!

Except this old 76'er! With some of those IC chips and gold plating it might be worth more. Out of the older tv's I've done, they're nice to scrap but I've haven't had one yet that has a lot of value. Oh well.
I've scrapped about 100 CRTs (TV/monitors), and I only found 1 aluminum deguasing coil. It had a purple poly coating.
Found 3 with decent amount of components.

I worked for our local council for 22 years and it makes me cringe when I think about how many crt's I threw in the back of the bin lorries. It must be in the hundreds
So the coils of wire in the TV. I've taken a few of these old tvs apart and noticed that some of the copper you pull out of the things is stuck together in clumps by glue or something. Would that downgrade the quality of copper? I'm talking about the copper in the yolk

Sheet of paper tucked into pocket is from the time every TV set came with the manual inside, no agents servicing only, and designed to be serviced as well.
1976, when the copper shortage was making that horrid household aluminium wire, that caused so many house fires. Yes lead solder, none of the lead free stuff. gold plate on the selector board is gold over copper and brass, and the IC's will have gold leadwires in them as well. That power supply transformer will have a good amount of copper in the windings as well, worth popping it off and grabbing that copper out, as the core will be easy to remove.
Old CRT, not an inline modern one, but three guns in a triad, each with their own correction coils and also with the 110 degree yoke.

aluminium can be a good thing to have... i bought a solid aluminium bath caddy a few ytears back just so it wouldnt rust or go shitty... no dramas ever!

Way too clean on the high tension components. I guess it was not used much or recently repaired. I can't believe you didn't plug it in and test it 1st.
plugging it in means the capacitors load up with power, I don't plug anything in that I intend to scrap.

Can an aluminum degauaing cable be put in low grade wire? It's a super thick one from a large sony tv
no, even low grade wire is meant to be copper based, strip it and put in aluminium
Ive never seen an ally yolk.. but one of every 3 crt's i scrap are ally degausing cable..

It's no more because they pay based on copper content, insulated wire is generally 32%, not worth stripping the wire

I dont think there are any shown in this video, but does anyone know what the little black/grey shiny tubes are that have copper wire threaded through them, often a few times?
They sound to me like valves, the forerunner of transistors. They took a little while to warm up before functioning. They are saleable items to restorers & owners of old amplifiers because they tend to blow, like an incandescent light globe.
I've never seen a yoke that is aluminum but at least 1/2 of the degaussing cable I get is aluminum.

gopro 4, it's just a scratched lens, can be replaced but it's an old camera anyway, might scrap it out for fun
eWaste Ben do you do sports n such? Im surprised yoy bought gopro vs a Nikon or ? DSLR. Great for vids and photography esp on trips. Gopros great for clipping to your head, helmet, chest etc n go. But if your doing beautiful shots, close up, wide angle or various shots, other cams offer much more. You can actually fix your okd camera then mount it as a 2nd angle cam while your shooting. Watch "my self Reliance ".. he uses multiple cams while he is out doing stuff n while in the cabin. You may lije the channel too but im only commenting so yoy can see how cool it looks. Btw, from his cam shots on here n such, a local magazine or ? Pays him for them. I hv seen you try to show the cam clise ups tho n well.. lol. You can also mount your cams in the car too. Where ya going on your vacation?
I'm not very good at cams, I started with gopro so it's what I know, mostly as chest mount.
No two cameras would be confusing for me when editing, not that good at it.
