I have a book in my kitchen drawer next to the window and have marked all the birds I’ve seen in my backyard. Also agree the Merlin app is awesome. Also keep a monocular in my day hike bag.
That's a great idea to keep a little book next to the window so you can write down the birds you see. I don't always carry my binoculars when out hiking to save weight, but I use my zoom camera lens instead. The monocular sounds like a good compromise for saving space and weight in the pack.
Im glad you enjoy watching brids, it give you so much fun when in nature. I have ben watching brids all my life and now I live in a great place by a fjord with a lot of brids just outside my house. Have a wonderful Sunday 😊😊
I bet living by the fjord must be a really great place for bird watching. You must have very good bird knowledge if you have been doing this for a long time. It's a great hobby. Thanks for commenting!
I am glad to hear you encourage birding as a hobby. The birds took me on a lifetime journey. I started birding as a kid, which led me to earn wildlife biology and environmental education degrees. That led me to work for the National Audubon Society for 5 years. I served as President and CEI of the Audubon Society of New York State (AKA Audubon International) for 26 years and retired in 2013. Now, I am back to enjoying birding as a hobby. So, birds took me on a fantastic journey around the globe several times.
Thanks for sharing your story with me. I love hearing how the outdoors influenced people's lives and careers. It sounds like birding led you to an awesome career path. Maybe you should do a birding video on your channel. Thanks for watching
Excellent presentation! Those apps seem to be a must for birdwatching. This video is another fine example of how you demonstrate the depth of your channel on hiking and spending time outdoors!
I love watching anything animal, so this is right up my alley. Thanks for this video and all of the tips they are amazing. Bringing support to the channel!
This video is a true alchemy of brilliance! 🌟🎬 It transforms information into pure gold, captivating the audience with its magical blend of visuals, narration, and expertise. The depth of knowledge presented with such finesse is nothing short of enchanting. It's evident that the creators possess the Midas touch when it comes to crafting exceptional content. I'm left in awe and eagerly anticipating the next magical creation. Bravo on this alchemical masterpiece! 👏✨28
Such great tips! Just downloaded the Merlin app and we are excited to use it on the trails tomorrow. And thank you for the shoutout, Sarah! You are amazing and we love your channel 🙂
I do like the Merlin app it’s great to have. I love bird watching and it’s something I’m enjoying more and more. You’ve got to be fairly patient at times but I find it’s worth it 😊
That's great that you find the Merlin app valuable too. You bring up a really good point that I probably should have included in the video - patience and persistence. You definitely need those with a bird watching hobby. Hope you had a good weekend.
Great ideas and tips, thanks Sarah! I’d say we’re casual bird watchers… learning a little here and there along the way on our hikes. It sure has gotten easier to ID the birds, with modern technology, and learn a little about them. I like your spotting scope… that’s the next level for sure!! 😄👍👍
That sounds like a good way to go about it and learning to ID the birds while hiking. Yes, technology has made this hobby easier for sure. I often go to wildlife refuges where there are eagles nests and things you can really only observe with the scope. It's been a fun toy to add to my gear.
Very informative. Ro is a birder. She's always listening and looking for birds on our hikes. I'll have to tell her about the apps you mentioned. We used to have a lot of feeders around our property and would enjoy watching all the different birds come to visit us while enjoying cocktails on the porch. Unfortunately, we had to get rid of all the feeders when we found out rats were taking up residence in our landscape and enjoying all the birdfeed that fell on the ground. Red squirrels started showing up also and having a feast. They were cute at first. The funny thing about those little critters is that they like to nest close to the ground, unlike the grey squirrels that nest high up in the trees. $3000 of car repairs later sealed the deal on getting rid of the feeders. Yep, those little red suckers nested under the hood of two of our vehicles and chewed up the wiring harnesses! Now we just hummingbird feeders and have fun watching them fight over it.
Oh my goodness! I had no idea bird feeders could cause that much trouble. That's crazy about the rats and the squirrel damage! Sounds like using a hummingbird feeder is the way to go! Hope you both enjoy the apps I shared. Thanks for watching.
I never though Id be into bird watching but this past year Ive tried to take more photo and video's of birds (mostly raptors). Its super hard but I enjoy it.
Glad you enjoyed it. Getting a basic birding book, or downloading the free Merlin app is a great way to start identifying them. Thanks for stopping by and watching.
Thank you for the great information and tools! Birding has been something I've been curious about, but I don't know if I'm ready to sit in one place for an extended period.
Very cool hobby Sarah! At my cabin I'd play a YT video of the Eastern Towhee call. Before we knew it we were surrounded by Towhees....sooo cool. Love the Merlin app. Thanks for the video...👊🏻😀!!!
That is really neat that playing the bird call from RUclips actually attracted the birds. I'm going to have to try that sometime! Yes, the Merlin app is pretty incredible. Thanks for commenting.
I never heard of these bird apps. Very cool. I bet they are so helpful. I just installed Merlin. I’m glad it’s free too. I can’t wait to start using it. I’ve been adding a lot of names to the birds and animals I recorded in our Colorado trip. I did it by looking them up on the internet. I’m guessing Merlin will speed things up and make it easier. This was helpful. I’m glad you put this out here. 👍12
That's great you installed the app and I think it really will help when you're traveling. It's easy to know the names of birds in our local area, but pretty challenging when it's something you've never seen before. Thanks for watching.
Nice video it will definitely help some new birders. The National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds is a really great book pictures biology of each bird. Apps are great to.👍👍
Hello . I love birdwatching as we luve is the Europe's biggest open ornithologic center and region . This us a very addictiv activity . Thanks for these good information . The thong isvto invest time and to hide very well for hours as some species spot you from hundred of meters away . Greetings from France . 🌞🌞👑

I think these would probably be great books for people like me who really know nothing about birds. But I'm really not a bird watcher. I just like taking pics of them if I can get a good shot. They can be challenging because they do tend to have quick movements, as I'm sure you well know. Guess I like the little bit of a challenge lol. Nice book recommendations, though. Oh I love the app. That's a bit more my speed. I might
Dang it. I keep hitting the wrong button before I'm done typing. I need more coffee 😆 I need to remember to look up this ebird thing. I'd be more likely to use that. A bird walk could be kind of cool. Now I feel like I want to get out and take some pics this weekend. Not sure I can, though. Have a ton of things to do.
It can be so hard to take bird photos. It can be a real challenge to capture them before they fly away. The app would be really great for your camping trips, just open it up when you hear the birds chirping. Thanks for watching.
That's awesome to be able to go to your neighbors. I love when I'm out bird watching and I get to talk to another birder. I usually learn a lot from them. Thanks for watching.
I think this is a great idea with a beginner's guide to bird watching. I absolutely support it and would love to take the course myself. Amazing video loading! 🔥🦜🦜🕊🕊41

Those are some good tips
Thanks. I'm always happy to hear if my viewers find these types of videos helpful. I appreciate you watching!

Thanks, it works well too.
I doubt I'll ever be a bird watcher, but I'm watching anyway out of curiosity. 😂 Great video! 😁💚👊
Aww, thank you! The Merlin app is a fun addition to your phone because it can tell you what birds are there just by sound.
Awesome information and fun... love that birding scope... Great Video... I'm watching two Hummingbirds as I type this... Thanks 😊
Glad you enjoyed it. My husband bought me the birding scope for my birthday and we all like using it even just to watch the bird feeder.
Cool app ❤
