I always wondered how effective those flying-saucer mufflers could be, but apparently they work fine for reducing the upper harmonics. Not a really low-toned muffler but just there to cut the hard edges off the pulsations.
I have a antique Case 140 square bailer that is powered by a VE4. I also have a GE Welder with a VF4 in it. Near impossible to start with a only a hand crank. I would love to put an electric start on them. Especially the welder. I see no mounting plate or hole for a starter. I'll need to take a few things apart to see if it even has a ring gear. Probably not. I'm curious if we've been suffering needlessly all these decades with hand-cranking them.
these were on B&N Mobil directo sirens but only one gasoline powered mobil directo exists now

@MrBbgrump My assumption is originally a Massey Harris Baler, but when I purchased it is was running a rig for drilling water wells.

It came with it. Not to hard to switch over from crank start to electric if needed.
Do ve4 & vf4 and Ch 4 all have same firing order?
Love these engines. Just bought this same one to tinker with, stuck valves and all. Just wish it had electric start...Next time.

I used Krylon spray paint and thought it turned out looking quite sharp. Can't remember the name of the colour though.
We had one on a baler. Hand crank.

Thanks. Parts came from ebay and I had some spare parts lying around from other engines.

They were made from ~1940-1976. This one is from 1953.
