  • What kind of calcium management would you need after parathyroid surgery? In this video, UCLA Health's endocrine surgeon Kyle Zanocco explains.
After parathyroidectomy, your blood calcium levels might fluctuate due to your parathyroid’s role in calcium regulation. You can expect a prescribed calcium supplement, often using Tums (calcium carbonate tablets). Dosage and frequency are tailored to your needs.
In some cases, vitamin D supplements, like calcitriol, are suggested to enhance calcium absorption by doubling its effectiveness.
Post-surgery recovery can take anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks, and you’ll gradually reduce your calcium supplement intake until it's no longer necessary.
Remember that every person is different. For more personalized advice, talk to your endocrine surgeon or endocrinologist.

Doctor it has been 8 years since my thyroid removal surgery in which my para thyroid glands were damaged and I suffered an extreme low calcium level. Initially I had extreme low calcium levels and after a year or two my need to take calcium settled at around 1500 mg . Since it is two hard for stomach to take so much of calcium, so I usually take only two tablets each 500 mg a day. My main issue is that my calcium levels still remain low despite taking two tablets of calcium each as 500 mg. This low calcium level affects my daily routine works and particularly sometimes I feel like my brain isn't functioning well as I find it hard to focus on things.... So kindly suggest any way out so that I have an improvement in my blood calcium levels

My endocrinologist didn't want me to take more than 2500mg of calcium per day and now my teeth are sensitive.
