    the mesh kept failing and didnt want to start solving. any help?..

    Hi, I just started to play around with Ansys explicit dynamics (student version) and I am facing an issue.
    I modelled a "bullet" with a diameter of 10mm, slightly tapered to 5mm at the tip, facing a 3mm piece of sheet metal - so pretty close to what you have done here
    Material for bullet is tungsten carbide (very hard)
    Material for sheet is aluminium alloy
    Both are set to "flexible"
    All my settings are basically same as yours, but it doesnt matter how high I am cranking the speed of the bullet (went up from 750 to 5000m/s) the bullet is not able to penetrate the sheet.
    What also makes no sense is this:
    My sheet metal is 100x100mm, and fixed at two sides but the data says, that it is getting stretched over 1000mm during impact..so the material should have failed way before that....
    any idea, what could be wrong in my settings? I guess somewhere I am missing to set, that the sheet/plate can be "ripped apart" by the projectile
    Many thanks in advance! =)

      Add "Erosion strain". Try with "Erosion strain" to 2. Also, add failure strain to, at least the target material model, roughly a value 0.3 (depends on material). After the addition of failure strain, remember to set the "Erode element after failure". If it is not done the mesh will keep on stretching without any failure sign.

      Use the failure material model, without which u will not be seeing the ripping of the blade no matter what ur velocity of the bullet be

    Somehow my bullet does just one step when i playback the animation. Its not like your smooth playback where you can watch the bullet slowly passes through the plate, just its initital location and then a jump to a point where it has passed through the plate.

    • @truptipatil3422
      @truptipatil3422  3 года назад

      Use standalone Autodyn. Set energy reference cycle to very high, like 9999999. Start solution and stop before the time erroe occurs and set Minimum time step below your error time step. This will allow solver to choose time step smaller than restricted initially.

    Hi I've been using ansys for a while for my project about armored vehicle against certain calibre. Can we make the simulation also breaks the bullet? Because of course the bullet will expand on impact. So far I see what I created was the plate was broken if my armor fails or just got bruised a bit if it works, but the bullet still in perfect condition

    • @truptipatil3422
      @truptipatil3422  5 лет назад

      Yes, you can. I have used a Steel bullet and Aluminium target. Steel bullet has more strength and more kinetic energy due to its density. You can try by exchanging materials. Also, give proper material erosion or failure criteria.

      Yours may be only elastic material properties. You need to add plasticity with some failure criteria (elastic-plastic).

    bro how did to calculated time plz explain ?

    • @truptipatil3422
      @truptipatil3422  4 года назад

      It is roughly target thickness divided by bullet speed, let say X. Now bullet speed will gradually drop while penetrating, so multiply X by factor of 2 or 3 which is your rough simulation time

  • @ahmadazmat4984
    @ahmadazmat4984 5 лет назад +2

    This is utter rubbish. This analysis does not provide any useful information about the real world bullet impacts.

    • @truptipatil3422
      @truptipatil3422  5 лет назад +3

      Purpose of this tutorial is to show how to set-up the impact problem in Autodyn. To simulate real bullet impact you need material properties of real target and bullet and, need to model real bullet shape. Also, the mesh needs to be finer. You will get penetration depth as output.
