There is 2 apple pencils, apple pencil 1 and apple pencil 2 In this situation, with the iPad Air 5 , the Apple Pencil 2 is compatible with this iPad. There is a magnet that the apple pencil sticks to on the side of the iPad and that is how you charge it. Edit: you do have to buy the Apple Pencil separately
