yes, this is a fun movie. it scared the hell out of me as kid. I remember watching it one sunday night with my hands over my eyes. thanks for the post.
B-movie acting aside, this film scared me to death (not literally obviously) when I was a kid. But they definitely knew how to make trailers that didn't give away too much of the plot.
I was 14 when I saw this movie in the theater. It spooked me something fierce!!! My friend's mother used keep her food pantry well stocked with lots of cans of chicken noodle soup because her 8 year old son loved them. As the Wicked Witch of West would say "Well ......after seeing this movie the young lad stopped eating chicken noodle soup!!! LOL!!!!!! I don't blame him because I also stopped eating chicken noodle soup too!!! LOL!!!! What scared me the most was the way the victims screamed!!!!
Kind of like the plot of the new Jurassic Park movie, genetically engineered monster loose on an Island. When you are a kid this movie is terrifying watch when they throw the dynamite at the creatures in the explosions you can see the wheels driving them
+theeasybeats I remember them throwing the dynamite from when I saw it in the early '70s on "Creature Features" but I don't remember seeing the wheels LOL.
Me too! If I would have done the math I would have been even more frightened! The Silicates reproduce every 6 hours. And their off spring comes out as a Full Grown Adult Silicate ready to start killing immediately!!! No other creature on Earth that I know of can reproduce at such an alarming rate!!!! Just imagine if you have 100 Silicates in 6 hours you will have 200 Silicates in 12 hours you will have 400 silicates, 18 hours you will have 800 Silicates finally in 24 hours you will have 1,600 Silicates!!!! In 6 more hours you will have 3,200 Hungry Silicates!!!! Now that is a total nightmare!!!!! I do not think that most people watching this movie truly understood the gravity of the situation!
But the TV networks will NOT show the movie in entirety!!! I haven't seen it in many years. Yet they show the same worn out movies over and over and over and over...
I watched this movie as a kid and it also scared me! I haven't seen it in years, but I found a RUclips channel that appears to have the movie. The RUclips channel is named Superyesteryears.
Notice how they avoid showing the monsters, with good reason of course. lol But I've always loved this movie, certainly not one of Cushing or Fisher's best but it's still a lot of atmospheric isolated island fun and hysteria. Very good looking trailer, the uncut German DVD has English audio but is not as fine looking though.
I saw this movie when it first came out in theaters. You have to see the corpse of Ian Bellows on the big screen close up they show in the UNCUT theater version. That is the scariest part in the whole movie!!!! Unfortunately, it was cut from the DVD, VHS and the new Blu-ray.
Yes the movie makers wanted us the movie viewers to first see what a silicate can do to a human being. After seeing that it is no longer important what the monster looks like. What is important is that we want to avoid the silicates so that we do not end up looking like their many victims!!! "A bloody pile of mush with our eyes sitting in it"!!! Not good!!!!! Scary!!!!!
Can anyone answer this question: After a Silicate divides for how long does it remain in a dormant state? In the movie after they ate that guy in lab then they divided then went into a dormant state. Because of this Peter Cushing and his friends were able to escape. However, after the Silicates ate the cows they quickly divided but they did NOT go into a dormant state. The Silicates quickly headed for house where the people were hiding!!! And one can tell by the high pitched sounds they were making that they very excited about gobbling up the all those people!!!! Scary!!!!!
Thanks though I'm not certain about Me TV in my area for Time Warner Cable. I do hope they make a modern remake on this classic, but not make it cheesy or a low budget quick cash type of film.
The Silicates were the most horrible monsters ever!!! The most horrifying thing about the Silicates is not what they look like but the intense pain and horrific torture they inflict on their victims. They did not have a lot special affects in those days so we had to imagine what the Silicates did to their victims in great detail! For starters they would constantly electrocute their victims with the power of a super electric eel!!! This would paralyze the victims so they could not fight back. Next they would inject thousands of microscopic needles into their bodies (all over their bodies). Like a super giant jelly fish!!! Through those needles they would fire into the victims a powerful enzyme that would immediately cause their bones to turn to a liquid. The Silicates would then suck out the now liquid bones right out of victims body with the victim feeling every bit of pain being caused by this horrible process!!!! Like one of the island residents said at the end of the movie "It's a nightmare"!!!!!!
I saw this movie as a child. It was weeks before I would once again walk my dog on the sidewalk underneath the trees. I was so afraid of these "turtles" as we called them, dropping out of the trees and sucking out my bones, that I walked my dog in the street!!!
See the woman who say “ Please don’t leave me alone”. She acts like a lady. Now a days, you would have some woman kickboxing or acting like a man. She depends on a MAN to defend her honor. Amen?

Scared me too! Saw it in 1971.
Watched this movie when I was a kid, seven years old, in matinee session. I loved it. "We don't know what exactly what they are" That's the horror....

oneguycoding Nowadays you see 86% of the movie before you've even sat down in the theater!
Me too. I saw this on a Sunday night when I was 10, and watched most of it with my hands on my face.
this movie freaked me out as a kid. I haven't seen it in years.
A classic. One of my favourites.

Reminded me of spaghetti noodles.
I think this movie would be great for a modern-day remake.
British Composer Barry Gray (Thunderbirds, UFO, Space:1999) did the sound effects of the creatures.
Barry Gray did a great job! The sounds the Silicates make is totally AWESOME!!!!!
Glad you agree!!! Thanks!

I haven't seen this movie since I was 12 or 13 years old. Lol!! That was in the 70's. Then television programming turned off after midnight and 1AM.
Saw this as a kid and it scared the living crap out of me.

I was 16 and enjoyed it thoroughly. Funny!!! We probably can't see it now due to greedy corporations. Typical of the times we live in.
It had the very same effect on me too. I could hear the sound they made after it got dark. I was 10 years old.
good trailer
classic cinema
