Thanks for this Andrew, this was the start of BLU's sensational 18 months racing where he became the best in the world. I was there for all the major days of the 89 carnival, also when Horlicks won the Mackinnon and went on to beat the world a few weeks later in Japan, just like BLU did 12 months later

Great seeing these races from a bit of a golden era of Australian racehorse quality. B.L.U was well nigh unstoppable in this period of his career, and his 1990 was amazing, so sad he suffered the tendon injury after that. Can't help think though that my favourite horse of the era Vo Rogue was right up there, didn't really participate in the Cox Plate in his pomp, but had narrow placings to Empire Rose and Horlicks in consecutive MacKinnons '88-89 and gave B.L.U a rare defeat in this era with his 1990 Australia Cup win.

Vo Rogue was a giant killer... Super Impose really only came to prominence once VR retired. Pride of Jenni is the only horse I've ever seen that raced with his pattern. The Vic and Vo Show was one ro remember

First time we saw the BLU winning way... could have run on by and won by a length instead preferred to brush up against the runner up and just win by a short head what a bully
