Finally a guy who knows how to make a demonstration video. You play the same things for each one which is what i need to hear not some guy just playing different things going all out on each instrument *thumbs up*
Great Video clip! Sorry for chiming in, I would love your thoughts. Have you thought about - Riddleagan Best Ukulele Remedy (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for learning ukulele for beginners minus the hard work. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my buddy got amazing results with it.
Soprano is a strumming machine, seriously it's so much fun to strum, not so good with picking, chords are sometimes a bit harder if you have big/chubby fingers but on the flip side the stretchy chords are easier to achieve with less distance to travel. Tenor is fantastic to pick or strum, you might have to stretch your fingers a lot further and unlike the soprano you have a lot more space to fit your fingers in with the added bonus that allows you to play barre chords further up the fret board, something you can't do on the soprano without a bit of difficulty. So if you just want to strum and are only going to stick to the first couple of frets, soprano might suit you, if you need the extra real estate and don't mind stretching your finger a bit further go the Tenor. I don't have a Concert but it's the middle ground I suppose, although concerts do have longer necks then soprano's so yeah.
strumming: soprano: 0:24 , concert: 1:05 , tenor: 1:43 Edit: haha this got more likes then I thought it would :) Edit: Holy crap this got a lot likes :)
Seems as if the bigger the ukulele the more it starts sounding like a guitar. I have a tenor and for me it is just perfect and it sounds really pretty. Soprano could be better if you want to play Hawaiian music but for other types of songs I prefer the tenor :)
deniesz4, can you suggest a kind of ukulele which is good at playing "im yours" and "let it go". Have you seen the video of Sungha Jung playing "im yours" and "let it go"? do you know what kind of ukulele did he use?
Gabriel Dayot I'm yours sounds perfect on a tenor and for Let it go (from frozen?) I honestly woudn't know. I think it would sound a bit odd on any ukulele? I for myself haven't really experienced soprano or concert. But I think you could best go to your local music store and find out what works best for you because the quality also depends on the prize you are willing to pay :)
Gabriel Dayot Depends. Though it's really worth it not to buy the cheapest one and look for one with good strings and stuff. You should just go to the music store and find out what you like most :)
omg I want to buy a ukelele so badly and this helped me rule out sop totally. but I'm caught in between concert and tenor omg both are just so amazing x.x
I just got my first ukulele today & it's a soprano. I wanted to get a concert but soprano's are cheaper. & I'm around 5' 7''-10'' & my hands are bigger than most everyone (every girl) in my grade. It's pretty comfortable to me, but everyone has preferences ✌
That's a great tutorial. Hearing the different tones, of each individual Ukelele. Played with the exact same, plucking and strumming. I currently have a Concert Ukelele, love the tone. Learning skills and different songs. Playing for nearly a year now, best purchase I've made. Considering a Tenor ukelele, really love the tone on it! Need a hobby, Ukelele is great. Go get yourself one. Time, practice and patience. It's really worth it, as little as 10 minutes up to as long as you want! It's a great feeling, playing along and creating new sounds as you learn! 👌
This video is perfect! I've been thinking about getting a ukelele recently. I read up on them and they said beginners should start with a Soprano. I was curious how each one sounded.
Soprano is the cheapest, sounds the most like what people think of when they hear the word ukulele, and uses standard tuning. Concert has all those advantages but is slightly more expensive but since the frets are spaced out more you can make a case for beginners with large hands. Many tenor ukulele are tuned linearly instead of re-entrant, so some beginners might be thrown off while following along with lessons unless they restring it especially if you have no musical background. Plus they are more expensive and not the best choice if your not even sure you are going to stick with it. But if you love ukulele and want to go far, consider it, it has a more warm and full sound, and is becoming more popular lately. Baritone ukulele is not featured in this video, it sounds nothing like these ukulele and is tuned very differently, unless you have some musical background it will be hard to follow along in lessons on that one. But if you are bold, you can try it. It sounds like if an ukulele and a guitar had babies. I use soprano and baritone ukulele, they both excel under different circumstances, and I have extensive musical background so switching between them is trivial. I would recommend concert or soprano for those who never played musical instrument before. Tenor if you want a second ukulele or a different sound. Baritone if you are already familiar with piano or guitar, or play multiple wind instruments and want to play a unique instrument.
if you have a lot of time and some knowledge of woodwork, I've found it incredibly fun to make my own Ukulele. It made me feel accomplished when I finally strung and strummed my own Concert ukulele. It has a decent sound to it as well, so I'm quite happy about it.
I started out with a soprano almost 2 years ago (some super cheap, learn to play, impulse buy) and I just ordered a really nice tenor. Looking forward to navigating the differences in play. :)
personally, no one beats soprano. I feel that soprano is the original ukulele, and the sound of it is just how an ukulele should be. other than it´s nice, it is small, handy and portable : ) it suits my small hands perfectly too. however, the other ones are nice too, but soprano is like the classic one and all time favorite for me personally : )
I have a tenor ukulele and I love it! Isreal “IZ” kamakawiwo’ole (somewhere over the rainbow) and Honoka&Azita play the tenor ukulele. I fell in love with their playing. So I bought a tenor ukulele too and it is sooo beautiful! You can do more on a tenor than on a soprano (because they’re so tiny). Sorry for my English.. I speak Dutch:)
I'm late to this comments section but I'm looking forward to getting a tenor. I only have a concert that I love but I'm obsessed with getting a tenor with a low g string. I'm looking forward to the variations in sound. The last uke I'll get will probably be a soprano to complete the collection (a baritone doesn't interest me). I assume the soprano will just be a fun, cheap one in a bright colour just to get a get a different tone on occasion.
I love the picking sound from the concert so much more than the soprano but I enjoy the strumming of the soprano rather than the concert ... hard picking between the two.
My first uke was a tenor and I had a hard time holding down chords. I am only 5 feet tall, small hands... A month later, I got me a soprano, and am very happy with it. I won't need the extra frets for now.
Your video was so helpful i was trying to decide size and the sound difference was throwing me off i chose a tenor thanks to your vid and it has not let me down :D
TABS for strumming song: sorry for not really professional form, but read it us tab in standard direction AECG: 3333, 3332, 5554, 5333, 3333, 3232, 1120, 2120, 3333
The size you buy should not just be based on the aesthetics, but on the type of songs you play, and what chords you use the most. The music I play use Em a lot, and this chord tends to sound cleaner, and with more sustain on sopranos, the same chord can sound very muted on concerts, unless you are playing a very high end concert. How you strum is also important, I use my index and thumbnails, so I find the soprano more forgiving to this kind of strumming. Using the thumb and index fingernail on a concert leads to me hitting the fretboard constantly. Choosing the right strings are also important. Aquila are quite possibly the standard, and deservedly so, but I also like the brighter sound of Martins. I also find Martins go very well with very cheap ukes, like entry level Mahalos, and the lighter material of the Martins is also very forgiving on the fret fingers, specially when playing chords that use the first fret.
The only problem I have wrong with this rant is the strumming bit where you say you hit the fretboard on a concert/tenor/baritone. I actually find that easier (for me) Idk Im weird, and even though Im a teen I feel like my chord hand is too close to me so Im getting a concert so I have at least a little space. Plucking is amazing on the Soprano uke, so if thats ur thing man, go right ahead and start saving up. This is the uke Im gonna buy:www.lunaguitars.com/query?upc=818896022118 I was gonna get the one Tyler Joseph has, but its too expensive and has a useless preamp that I wont use unless I get huge with a band and everything. I have a soprano now that I honestly love and has an amazingly springy and sharp sound. And, if you like the sharp, high pitched sound of a Soprano, but want a bigger uke, get metal strings, or just the C string, and change it to metal.
Honestly, I think Tenor is a great size b/c you can then muck about with GCEA as well as DGBE tunings. It's great fun to be able to use your ukulele in two different ways :)
I have a soprano makala dolphin bridge Uke and it's blue. If anyone is looking for a beginner uke I definitely suggest mine. I started playing a week ago and learned all my chords already and can play 50 songs. It looks and sound beautiful and it's not heavy at all. Don't let the toyish look fool you. Idk why I'm making this comment on this video but oh well 😂🤓
Subhroneel Moitra I purchased the concert awhile back, and I absolutely love it! The sound is perfect because it isn’t too high and isn’t too low. I have tried a soprano (my friend’s) and it was pretty but I still prefer the concert. (:
This is helpful!!! Thank you!! I have a soprano uke and my husband is trying to decide what to get. This solidified our decision to get him a tenor. :)
This isn't a realistic comparison. These 3 ukuleles are made of different woods and there's no indication of whether they're solid wood or laminate. Size is just one factor to consider when choosing a ukulele. Before buying, If you can borrow a ukulele from a friend. Learn to play at least a few chords and a couple songs. A reputable music store will let you try instruments you're considering. Don't buy an instrument online that you haven't actually played. You can play two ukuleles of the same make, model and size and they can sound and fell very different.
I've had a concert ukulele since I began learning afew years ago, I reckon I'm gonna get myself a tenor soon. Thankyou this video was veeery helpful :)
The price of your average good Ukelele is affordable enough to buy all 3. Just drink home made coffee for 60 days rather than that $3-5 Starbucks and you will have your budget to buy 3 Ukes
im so excited because I just bought my first ukulele! it is from the company luna and it is a soprano uke. it wil arive in a couple of days but the only problem is that is has the strings set up for right-handed people and I am left-hand. so now I have to re-string it.
My concert uke comes in the mail in the next 2 days and I can't freaking wait. It's my first uke but I love the warmer sound you get with it, rather than the traditional bark of the soprano. All of them sound beautiful though :D
My dad has bought me a soprano uke, but now it’s too small for a few songs I wanna play. He said he wanted to get a baritone ukulele, and I dint know what it is, turns out it’s the biggest size. I’d be fine with a concert, but oh well!
Got a Soprano with my Mom for 65 dollars also with a tuner and Method Book 1 today after returning my trumpet. Im a lefty so I could’ve asked the staff to rearrange the strings but one of the staff said I should learn how to play with my right hand because if your a lefty you don’t have as many options as a righty does. I was planning to get a Concert but a Soprano fit me just fine. I’m really low on energy right now so I’m not going to read the Method Book right now, maybe later tonight. I was so confused with the strings but remembered I was a lefty and the Ukulele was for right handers, so I just changed how I held it. It felt uncomfortable, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it.
I had always wanted to learn bass, but I was a lefty, and the school had no lefty guitars so I learnt the right handed method. It was really tricky because it didn't feel right and my picking hand was so weak but I got used to it eventually. Now I play all string instruments with my right and the left feels weird. (I know this is old and you've probably gotten the hand of it, I just wanted to share)
I have a Tenor and Soprano.. I did not know the Concert sounds that good... But I just "playing" with this tools... If I will really better in playing I will reward myself with a Concert one...
It's a good idea to try all three ukes "for size": soprano, concert (aka "alto"), and tenor in order to see which is the best fit for your hands, fingers and body. I have better "finger and fret" control with either a concert or a tenor. To my ears, the soprano does seem to have more of a "Hawaiian" sound than the other two. I prefer the "fuller" sound and tone of the concert and tenor. I've also tried the "Low G" string on my tenor, but switched back to the "High G." See if you can "experiment for free" first before you purchase. [It's like trying on or trying out different sizes of gloves, sunglasses, shoes, bicycles, etc.] In the end, it's your personal decision. You're the one who has to be happy and comfortable with your newly-purchased instrument. Thanks, too, GigGear, for posting the video!
I have 2 sopranos, 2 concerts,1 tenor and a baritone. 😂 my tenor has a low G string while the others still have the higher G. Baritone is another beast on its own but a beautiful instrument. Tenor also has a puck-up on it so I can officially lead sing alongs. 😅
Any chance you could share the chord progressions you are using for the first two??? I have been trying to look close but I'm a noob :/ Love the sound. I know it's probably basic, but tough for me.
The Sopranos are cute, but I can't play anything under a Tenor with my bass guitar fingers. I prefer low G for which you can find loads of tabs. I have the Kala Tenor KA he has in the video and am very happy with it so far.
I recently picked up a decent soprano, and it is a lot of fun, and not difficult for me since I already play the guitar. Since my purchase I have gone back to the guitar store to try out others because I am thinking about buying another and almost went with the concert until I realized that I wanted more fret spacing than what you would find in the saprano and concert. So now I'm looking for a nice tenor uke. Some chords seem like they will be very tough on the smaller uke, until well practiced
I used to play guitar, but had an injury that affected my left hand dexterity. I still know how to play the guitar, but my hand often freezes on me, when trying to play. Someone suggested a Ukulele, because there are only 4 strings, and there easier to play then guitar, because they're not steel. Getting the ukulele will actually be a kind of therapy for me. I was thinking of the standard Soprano, but my hands are large. To go from a full size twelve string guitar, to a tiny 21 inch ukelele seemed like too far a stretch. I decided today, to order a 23 inch Concert. It will sound a little more full, and I'm hoping that my left hand will be able too fret it.
+James Burke I also suggest maybe getting a baritone ukulele. They are tuned to the last four strings of the guitar, so you could play the guitar chords, just with less strings.
+Jennifer Stangret I ended up getting a decent Concert Ukulele. I didn't want to spend a lot, because I didn't know if I stick wt it. Still I got I nice Gordoba, for around $100, and practice is going well. I had a traumatic brain injury 22 years ago, and learning the new cords, is a good therapy. Music exercises both the hand, and mind!
MontiR Aruba soprano, concert and tenor are but a baritone is tuned like the bottom four strings of a guitar but he didn't show a baritone in this video
"I' have found that once I settled on what tone I wanted or preferred, the next issue for me was the shape of the neck. "I" tend to like a flatter neck. Of lesser concern to me, is the tuning heads (shape, design, orientation). Perhaps someone would talk about the wood (solid vs laminate) and the neck shape and size????!!!!
Finally a guy who knows how to make a demonstration video. You play the same things for each one which is what i need to hear not some guy just playing different things going all out on each instrument *thumbs up*
TheAngelJC Many thanks!
***** what are the chords for the second song?
Heck yes😂

Thank you.
I literally watch this every time I want to buy a uke ahahah
Just go for it! Nothing to lose!
Just go with the size that best fits your hands I’m going for a concert
SAME!!!!! I'm buying this ukulele that is like a dark blue and it has this awesome pattern strap, it's so cool.
Go for it dude, it's the best instrument to introduce you to the string family

Shane Le Plastrier Having tiny hands is great for a Soprano.
Amazing comment
Layla Miya yeah but I like the sound of tenor, so my fingers hurt after playing but it sounds good
I have short and fat fingers, I’m thinking of getting either a Soprano, Concert, or a Tenor. What should I get?

Gabriel Dayot For a good one, about $200 mostly. I got a Cordoba 20tm-ce, and that was $200, or $15 more and you get a gig bag with it.

Doesn't matter.
Well shit and I just ordered a soprano online and now I'm kinda regretting the choice I made? 😂
Its a size comparison not a sound comparison, just so people can have an idea of how big they are.
I've had a concert ukulele since I began learning afew years ago, I reckon I'm gonna get myself a tenor soon. Thankyou this video was veeery helpful :)
I have a concert one ! He sound veryyy great !
AHH I DONT KNOW IF I WANT A CONCERT OR SOPRANO😭
Ugly Jerk SAME UGHHHH
Ugly Jerk I have a Concert so I'd recommend that
Ugly Jerk I have a Soprano and I love it I practice everyday
The price of your average good Ukelele is affordable enough to buy all 3. Just drink home made coffee for 60 days rather than that $3-5 Starbucks and you will have your budget to buy 3 Ukes
WHAT DID YOU END UP BUYING?? :D
I love people who go straight to the point thank you !!
now i am using soprano.. the next time time i am going to buy TENOR!! thx for sharing..
i got a awesome concert uke but all that i can say is soprano is just beautiful
soprano strumming: 0:26 concert strumming: 1:06. tenor strumming: 1:44
im so excited because I just bought my first ukulele! it is from the company luna and it is a soprano uke. it wil arive in a couple of days but the only problem is that is has the strings set up for right-handed people and I am left-hand. so now I have to re-string it.
I got the smallest which is the soprano mahalo u-30wt. Maybe sometime in the future I'll jump up to the concert version....hmm...
1:05-Concert
1:44-Tenor
0:26- Soprano
muchas gracias por la informacion pela, la verdad q el soprano medio pelo me quedo con el concert buen video
no se si sos pelado igual pero por como te vestis y tus manos pareces pelado...
great vid u go straight to the point
Does anyone know what song the person is playing? It's beautiful and I want to learn after getting my Ukulele.
Ooh thanks for this! Thinking concert is the one I want
What is the song he is playing ?? I wanna learn it ! :D
I own a Makala Soprano. It is nice for small fingers, like i have. But the sound is great, as well.
I'm getting a soprano soon after I learn to play that I'm going to upgrade in sizes to a concert
My concert uke comes in the mail in the next 2 days and I can't freaking wait. It's my first uke but I love the warmer sound you get with it, rather than the traditional bark of the soprano. All of them sound beautiful though :D
I know it's super late to reply, but did you like the uke?
I like my concert way better than a normal uke. It has a fuller and less "twangy" sound than its smaller counterpart.
Almost 100% on getting a concert ukulele because my hands would be way too big for a soprano and honestly I prefer the sound and size over the tenor
+jpta162 i have a soprano because my hands are tiny but i like concert's sound as well. it's a nice in-between of the three
+GarlicPoncho aye clique |-/
I can't seem to handle the Soprano, my fingers seem to big to access the first fret. :(
+Colaris Same I think I want to to upgrade to a Tenor because I know some uke chords already.
Great video! Helped my friend and I find the right uke ! Have a nice day!
My dad has bought me a soprano uke, but now it’s too small for a few songs I wanna play. He said he wanted to get a baritone ukulele, and I dint know what it is, turns out it’s the biggest size. I’d be fine with a concert, but oh well!
Oh goodness a baritone uke is tuned different than a soprano so you might want to watch out
Thank youuu i decided now i'll go to Concert . thats sounds Mixed Tune of Soprano and Tenor bravo
So I was stuck between soprano and concert and now I want both lol. Getting the soprano first though(:
Perfect! Thank you! 🎶
I have a Tenor and Soprano.. I did not know the Concert sounds that good... But I just "playing" with this tools... If I will really better in playing I will reward myself with a Concert one...
Today is the day I FINALLY buy a Ukulele...
TheMegatron916 how’d it go
I am still figuring out which one is best for me
hey whats the chords i know you were improvising but i loved it
Marcus Link that's my question!
I've also tried the "Low G" string on my tenor, but switched back to the "High G."
See if you can "experiment for free" first before you purchase. [It's like trying on or trying out different sizes of gloves, sunglasses, shoes, bicycles, etc.] In the end, it's your personal decision. You're the one who has to be happy and comfortable with your newly-purchased instrument. Thanks, too, GigGear, for posting the video!
Love this I'm about to get a tenor next month this really helped me
Is tenor good for beginners?
The Soprano size just has that must have Uke tone in spades!
Thanks a bunch man. This helped alot. :D
Nice video, I just bought tenor because I have experience with guitar so I think it's the best choice. :)
I prefer tenor ukelele. I like the way it sounds xD
The Sopranos are cute, but I can't play anything under a Tenor with my bass guitar fingers. I prefer low G for which you can find loads of tabs. I have the Kala Tenor KA he has in the video and am very happy with it so far.
Very helpful, thank you!
I remember watching this a year ago and bought a luna concert ukulele, and honestly wish I went with enya.
Me encantó como suena el ukulele soprano :3
I’m gonna get the tenor
I recently picked up a decent soprano, and it is a lot of fun, and not difficult for me since I already play the guitar. Since my purchase I have gone back to the guitar store to try out others because I am thinking about buying another and almost went with the concert until I realized that I wanted more fret spacing than what you would find in the saprano and concert. So now I'm looking for a nice tenor uke. Some chords seem like they will be very tough on the smaller uke, until well practiced
pitbrand where did you get your soprano from? and how much was it?
The chords when being strummed seem to sound very jazzy when played on the tenor.
I have small finger so I bought the small one and is incredible
Are all three Ukes tuned the same? GCEA?
Yes, they certainly are!
Baritone ukes are the ukes that are tuned differently :)
MontiR Aruba soprano, concert and tenor are but a baritone is tuned like the bottom four strings of a guitar but he didn't show a baritone in this video
+Fabulous_Ashleigh 123 baritone is not a size
+n0moi0 baritone is indeed a size of ukulele
I have 2 of that same brand of ukulele. I love them! One is a soprano and one is a tenor. I personally prefer the tenor.
is tenor a best choice for a beginner? Btw im just 13 and want to try playing music for the first time
Mystic Donutz I would recommend the soprano or concert if you are just starting off
I have a tenor. Beautiful
