Max Landis on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast - Part 1

  • When I was initially publicly shamed on twitter in late 2017, I promised myself that I would not seek out a platform, and focus mainly on myself, my own life and my own art. I would only appear on a platform if I was asked to directly; I stayed true to that for nearly five years. Finally, someone asked me, and it was Bret Easton Ellis, a writer I deeply respect. I'm clearly very nervous in the conversation, but I do feel I said some things worth hearing. Bret gave me permission to post part 1 so I thought: why not?

    Great interview dude.
I really appreciate your opening up like this.
If it makes you feel better, as a pre-internet star wars kid, while I wasn't an explosive behavioral problem, I DID get very irrationally upset when my parents told me one of my cousin's was going to be named "Luke". Couldn't explain it then, can't explain it now, but I ran off and cried in a dark bathroom over it.

I agree with both of you guys. I was aware of Max Landis as a screenwriter, before his “scandals” and “Cancellation”. Shortly before he was “canceled“ He wrote a couple of excellent comic books, including white has become my all-time favorite Superman stories “American Alien“. If things turned out differently, he had really cool long-term plans for sequels to his Superman story. Over the last year or two, using various mediums, he’s been working on a massive fan fiction Superman story with a reimagining of the DC universe called The Kryptonian Epic. I became such a fan, that eventually I had to look up what he’d been “canceled” for. I found out that while, he certainly did some fucked up stuff, but he genuinely seems to have matured and learned quite a bit about that experience and life along the way. It just sucks because his passion is being a screenwriter and who knows if he’ll ever get to do that again? The thing about cancel culture is, no one is born perfect, we always learn from our mistakes. Assume when these public mistakes happen to celebrities and the way people react to them, you sort of have to ask yourself is this just moral posturing and virtue signaling? Because I think there needs to be a path to redemption. Cancel culture just gets offended by what people say and then basically try to destroy their livelihood it seems hypocritical to me. You’re just completely writing somebody off without allowing for any possibility of chance or hopeful forgiveness. Having said all that, I am a huge Max Landis fan and and I want to see him to continue to make content like The Kryptonian Epic. Maybe they will finally adapt to a comic book at one one day.? Max clearly got caught up in the whole Hollywood scene and treated some women he was seeing disrespectfully and poorly. Obviously I don’t know the guy, but based on stuff I have seen him in on in the past, he has a totally different energy and it seems like he’s genuinely learned from his mistakes.

This podcast was amazing as they always are with BEE. Your telling of your father and the twilight zone accident is so sad and yet so much of what you said is what I've explained to people online, yet I'd get ridiculed and even banned off websites backing your father! I have had the pleasure of meeting your dad twice and he was an absolute gentleman and such a lovely man.
Anyway, great conversation and continue being yourself cause there are many of us out there who love your work, your views and your stories.

Hahahaha. I'm in your corner, man. I know you're not looking for advice from someone you don't even know, but the only way your career is going to stay on hold is if you keep it there. You're a good person, your concerns over not wanting to come off a certain way if you take a platform and blah blah, they've beaten you into that spot. You know who your are and what you are. You (and only you) know the truth. You wouldn't take treatment for an ailment somebody lied about you having, you wouldn't get stitches for a cut someone claims you suffered, so don't keep yourself off the grid because someone pushed you off the grid.
But again, you didn't ask for advice. I'll shut up. Much love, dude.
