    I bought my first Barbie in 1960, I was in 1st grade. LOVED BARBIE!!!! My mom said I had to earn the money, so I did chores and earned $3. We went to the store and I got a brunette ponytail Barbie. My mom also let me get an outfit. I got Busy Gal because it had several pieces to mix and match. I LOVED the little book of outfits too. I started sewing for Barbie in 2nd grade. Still sewing and collecting dolls.

    10:12 I didn't know that there were Barbies that closed their eyes like that, that Miss Barbie with Sleep Eyes is gorgeous and her mechanism is in perfect condition. Now I want one for my collection, I collect also with no rhyme or reason, usually I only collect things that catch my eye. Greetings from Mexico.

      Isn't Miss Barbie with Sleep Eyes just mesmerizing? Collecting with "no rhyme or reason" can be the most fun because you end up with a diverse and truly personal collection. Thanks for tuning in all the way from Mexico! 🌟

    Rachel, I so LOVE your Mom's Barbie Collection:)!! Bradley Justice Yarbrough is wonderful at teaching us so much about Barbie's designers and history:)!! I always thought that the Barbie with the black and white bathing suit was the Number One Barbie, I had no idea that it was the Gay Parsian outfitted Barbie:)!! And The Barbie in the Bubble Dress with the Gay Parsian look is so glamorous:)!! I so LOVE the dress with the rabbit fur and her long white graceful gloves:)!! I was also surprised that her white stole was made of rabbit fur, I thought it was faux fur:)! And it is a shame that Charlotte Johnson never made the pink ballet dress because the graphics on the box made it look so pretty:)!! And I actually LOVE the bright blue eyes on the Miss Barbie or "sleepy eye" Barbie and I really LOVE the pink bathing suit with gold and pink beads on it as well as the gold platform shoes she is wearing:)!! Thank you Rachel for sharing your Mom's glamorous Barbie Collection and thank you Bradley Justice Yarbrough for all the history on Barbie:)!!

    Wow, the Number One Barbie in Gay Parisienne is AMAZING! I noticed that the coloring on Rachel's Mom's Number One still has some nice "color"--- rather than pure white all over. So, Rachel's Mom must have kept that Number One away from sunlight. Good for her. ~~ I own many vintage Barbies (& friends and relatives), I do not have a Number One, but several Number Threes and Number Fours (since they are my favorites). Anyhow, such a nice video. Thank you Rachel, for putting this together for us! (PS- Bradley is great!)

    I had the doll with the striped bathing suit, I think she had a big hat. I had one favourite Barbie piece of clothing. It was a Red Velvet A-line coat with bell sleeves and white Satin lining. My friends and I would take turns picking dolls then picking clothes. My red coat was always my favourite. I had many dolls and clothes because my aunt got the for me at thrift stores. My friends didn’t have many but maybe I. Needles to say, I loved Fashion Illustration and went on to Fashion Design School. I have American Girl Dolls, WW, ETC. hoping that my grand children and great grandchildren inherit the same interest. My daughter has the gene too. Now I love Tonner’s Dolls and already have 3. 92X16 and 1 X18 inch.) I plan to dress them in high fashion like Demuse. It is your fault that I love Tonner’s now.
    I just noticed my favourite coat. It is on the bottom of the box shown in black. Mine was red velvet. I really didn’t like the short curly hair.

    I have this exact Talking Barbie that I repaired to talk, same hair color even. She mentions P.J. in her phrases, rather than Stacey, even though Stacey was still one of Barbie's friends in 1970. I often wish that Barbie would mention P.J., Stacey and Christie in her speech. I just love this group of dolls, I went through a phase where I collected quite a few Talkers and repaired several of them to talk. I still have a lot of them that need to be repaired, but I just kind of lost steam.
    I would describe Miss Barbie as 'peculiar' looking. :D

      I would too...definitely. I remember seeing her in the discount stores in 64 or 65 when she was originally sold. I liked her swing and her packaging, but the doll itself did not attract me. I was about five. The shiny head and the staring eyes were very off-putting. I always, always wondered why Mattel greenlighted that particular doll head. Some of their marketing decisions have baffled me since childhood and I remember wondering, as a little girl, what these grownups at the big doll factory were thinking back then. (I was not a typical child, I was always wanting to know things other kids didn't want to know.) I badly wanted to ask them about Miss Barbie's alien-creature look, and why they produced the sullen face of Fashion Queen (another one I saw in the stores back then, and rejected for her strange unhappy face, even if I thought her wigs looked interesting), and the googly-eyed cartoony Midge head. I had coloring books with Barbie and Midge, and Midge always looked very pretty in them---but then the Midge I saw in the stores looked nothing like her, and reminded me of a Winchell Mahoney ventriloquist's dummy with her odd features. I remember being so puzzled about that!
      I held on to my Tammy dolls until Mattel changed its ways. Seriously. I was mad Tammy didn't have new clothes in the stores anymore, and I loved the Barbie fashions, but of course they wouldn't fit Tammy. So that meant...I needed a Barbie. I stood there and considered a Color Magic, but I knew my mother would think I was too young to be using liquid stuff on a doll to change hair colors and that it would be assumed the chemicals would get on the carpet somehow. So I didn't even ask. But she was at least a doll I could imagine owning.
      Eventually I got my first Barbie, an American Girl, and some incredibly nice clothes that came out at the same time. But those earlier dolls, no matter how much I wanted a Barbie, were just not acceptable to me. And I didn't relate to the bubblecut or the ponytail dolls---I wanted a Barbie that was somehow different from those rather dated styles. So once American Girl, that dazzing sophisticate, came along, with her cinnamon-haired, long swinging bob and tan skin with coral lips and fingernails, and then those teen pleasure puppies, the TNTs with their mod clothes and crazy earrings, I was so happy. They were everything I had wanted and couldn't put into words in 1965, standing in the store, looking up at the ones that could wear those great clothes that Tammy couldn't, but had these hard faces I couldn't love.

      @@CissyPantsCrafts I don’t know the answer to that. I just don’t like to alter with mine, and I have no experience in Barbie competition rules. I have never attended Barbie convention but hope to in the future. Thanks for watching!

      @@RachelHoffmanDolls Thanks Rachel. There is a competition at UFDC convention this year I was just wondering because of that. I’ve never been to a Barbie doll convention either. I sort of wanted to do it that year that it was the week before UFDC in the same space but wasn’t able to do it.
      Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions. For now, like you, I think I’ll just leave them alone and not do anything to them. I don’t really mind them being so pale.

    • @Siansonea
      @Siansonea 3 года назад +1

      Under no circumstances should you paint your dolls, in my opinion. If the dolls are cosmetically unappealing to you, you might consider selling them and buying dolls that are more attractive. But if you care about the dolls' value at all, you should definitely not alter them in a permanent way, as painting would.
      I have done extensive retouching on vintage dolls, and it's a very fiddly process. The pale skintone of the early dolls is a defining feature of the #1, #2 and #3 dolls, so you really don't want to try to alter that. Technically, this is a materials defect, as is the greasy face of the 1961 dolls and the 'melt' of the Miss Barbie head when the wigs are left on the doll for too long. Clearly the pale skintone issue was recognized pretty soon after production, as the #4 Barbie doll has a bright peachy skintone that is colorfast. To me, the #4 is the quintessential early Barbie doll, so if you really want that catalog-page look, you should collect #4 dolls. And #4 dolls are quite a bit less expensive to collect than the earlier three versions.
