Learned this in the Marine Corps: the coffee from your MRE makes a great ember using a magnifying lens or fresnel lens. Prep a birds nest, pour out coffee in a nice pile on a leaf or something, ignite the coffee with the lens, transfer to birds nest, blow into flame. Works fantastic. Keep up the great content sir.
Back in the early 90s I was stationed in the Army at Ft. Wainwright, AK. The AF survival instructors from the nearby AF Base did a presentation at a local F&G event. They took the foil packets of the large Vaseline impregnated gauze bandages and would cut a small X in the middle. They would light it with a fire steel and I was surprised how long it would burn. They would peel the edges back as needed, but the small X would contain the flame while drawing from the petroleum jelly from within the covered pad. I've come to really appreciate what can be done with a little cotton and some form of anything containing some form of petroleum wax from PJ to Chapstick.
Great videos you make with a ton great information. Some of this I remember from my father (Navy Intel), Uncles (AF, Army, Navy) and a cousin (USMC-Vietnam). We practiced Survival and Bushcraft in the Sierra Nevada's outside Yosemite NP. They're all gone now but I still remember what they taught me and especially YOUR videos. Thank you, Andrew!
Excellent Presentation ! In "civilian" world, the burn bandage is called ADAPTIC - found in Fire Trucks, Ambulances, ER's. And most good pharmacies have it.
For awhile, an issued comb was a good firestarter. You see, they used to be made of celluloid, which is a close relative to nitrocellulose ;) . A shame, that they don't make 'em like they used to, eh?
Nicely done…brings back memories!!! Still use these as events warrant and enjoy showing the youngsters how us old guys did it as the opportunity presents itself !!!
Another awesome video is always a couple of those tricks I knew but some of them are new to me so that's awesome thank you for the sage advice and keep doing what you're doing man cuz you're killing it.
Thanks to you my sewing kit is my go-to for everything first! Lol. Seriously though thank you so much Andrew. I love learning from your videos. Other instructor videos make me feel like I'm a warm glass of piss for not having been in the army. That being said most of the people who've been in service don't need to learn from a RUclips video like I do. You speak clearly directly knowledgeably. " this is the Ranger way" of doing things. Makes me feel like I'm being taught by the best. .... again keep them coming. We are standing by!
I've used a few of those. Glad you showed the ammo trick, because I've heard of it but never saw it. Word of advice to those using hand sanitizer; be careful how much you use. Some kids burned down my hometown high school when they lit the woodshop workbench on fire with hand sanitizer. 😠
Good one. Never thought about the gum wrap. Shoe .. er .. boot polish works as well, as do some (not all) of the cleaning compounds, e.g. on TP (used, or not)
Another old school way is with the L shaped flashlights. Remove the bulb housing to expose 2 prongs and wrap your dog tags around them. If you have fresh batteries your chain will glow red hot. :)
Fire Tinder The typical method of fire building is to fuzz stick. There is a faster and better method. That is a pencil sharper. It can produce ultrathin shavings that can be lit with fire steel. There is a slightly larger version for sharpening carpentry pencils. They are the only blades you can carry on a plane. Even wet sticks shavings are mostly dry except the very edge. The remainder is a pointy stick. Can you say an arrow. Solar fire starter A plastic baggy with water twisted into a ball forms a solar lens to start fires.
I always kept a some off the books ammo (few rounds) just to keep the books balanced and "just in case". Sometimes when we had problems with someone mooching too many smokes, I'd debullet one or two, and leave a new pack of smokes out for them to find. Ah, good times!
You can use a rangerband with a lighter to light fire or to repair holes in rubberised waterproof cllothing. You can use a swiss army knife with a battery too (with the can and bottle opener). The outside birk of a birch makes a excelent firestarter as well. I like to have lighter fluid. I carry it primary for my peacock pocket warmers. They are well worth it. If you are at/near a car the electric cigarette lighters can be a easy firesource (most cars still have the opening although they lack the lighter. A tealight is also great to start a fire as well as to privide heat (best in connection with a metal can or aluminium foil and poncho.
I was hoping to see the other method I've seen in some of your other video's, the one where you mix the two chemicals and get the fire. A great video thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Adding a small zip tie around the button of the bic lighter prevents your lighter from losing its fuel and can be removed and replaced once zipped, clipping the extra length makes it a little sharp though can be filed to prevent cuts. Plus the adhesive sticker is also flammable, once you have a empty lighter if the wheel is removed slowly the springs can be made into a snare & fishing hook and the childproof metal can be removed and can also be made into a fishing hook.
In the Philippines, we are always on the hunt for better, quicker drying tinder. Nothing dries well in our high humidity conditions. As I type this, it NOT rain/typhoon season yet small twigs and sticks we pick up are difficult to light. They snap like they are dry but still require much more of our homemade wax impregnated cotton pads to get going than what I am accustomed to. Back in the states, one or two small slivers from a pad was all that was needed. Here, I often need to use three fourths to a whole pad. Still experimenting. I hear coconut fiber works well so that is next on my list for a trial run.
It has been on my to-do list to go through your survival playlist starting at this one here. This is great information. I use waterproof rechargeable plasma Arc lighters. With a little solar bank it's an indefinite source of Fire.
A few years ago, there was a murder in the California Dept. of Correction & Rehabilitation (Go figure). The perpetrator used a popular brand name of powdered coffee creamer , which is highly flammable....just saying.

Beware the explosive nature of a butane lighter when hit by a spark from a welder, a magnesium bar, or a ferrocerium rod. If you carry a Zippo lighter instead, you will want to top it off with fuel regularly before you head out.
Another great 📹 video thanks.... Another method I personally like is potassium permanganate and glycerin, I think its so cool how it just bursts into flame 🔥. I wonder if that would work with used dry coffee grounds?
Great content sir

Rock steady sir
The creamer dusted upon the birds nest can take a spark as well, and save your coffee :)
@@SpamMusubi308 it doesn't seem to work, even with thoroughly dried used grounds.

One thing just struck me: a burn bandage is flammable.... irony!
Love the improvised bandaid 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
You can also use the little wrapper the alcohol prep pad came in as a fuel extender. It burns quite well.
Good stuff here brother and thanks for your service for the freedom of our blessed nation and others!!

Very ingenious. Like you were saying the majority of those resources, we already have in our packs. Great content keep it up outstanding af!
When I watched this there was one thumbs down. I guess they tried all these methods, and still couldn't get a fire started.
Some people out there couldn’t build a good fire with a lighter
I was a 12B. we always had C4 and it is a great firestarter.
Just don't stomp on it to put it out. The end result would be bad.

The hand sanitizer will even light charcoal, pretty easily. My father uses it, as grill lighter.
Gonna have 2 try civilian face paint. Great tip ❗
Chewing gum wrapper and a AAA battery is always a good one
Nice! Excellent information, thank you for posting this. Love learning new hacks with gear we all had sitting at our disposal.

Rubber ranger bands burn real good .
Will the vaseline bandage start with a ferro rod or just a flame?
A ferro will work, it make take a few strikes or you can scrap away some of the Vaseline to expose the fibers of the bandage to hit it with sparks
