My First Day in Marrakesh, Morocco 🇲🇦

  • I spend my first day in Morocco exploring Marrakesh, the beating heart of this nation. Stepping out into the Medina from my riad, I wander through the vibrant streets to Jemaa el-Fnaa and the Koutoubia Mosque, before sampling snail broth and taking in the festival atmosphere of the main square at night. The following morning I venture to the quieter Kasbah area,, visiting Saadian tombs and a palace.

    I'm Jason, a full-time British Travel Vlogger and RUclipsr who's been to 55 countries. I've been travelling around the world full-time since 2017. So far, my trips have taken me to Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas.
    I have travel series' from many of the world's best (and least) known destinations. I filmed the first vlogs on my channel in the summer of 2016 after spending a year living in China. A proper solo trip around Eastern Europe followed after graduating from University in the summer of 2017, taking me to Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Kosovo. This trip marked the start of my efforts to make a RUclips full-time job.
    After that European trip I went heavily into exploring Asia, visiting India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Korea and Kazakhstan (seeing me cover a lot of Far East and Southeast Asia in particular).
    I have also travelled to North Africa and the Middle East fairly extensively over the last five years, filming videos in Turkey, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Palestine.
    To date, I have not yet been to Australasia or South America. Though I am hoping to visit the latter sometime in 2022, along with a first stop in the Caribbean.
    I've travelled to North America just once as a RUclipsr, visiting Mexico in 2021. Though I have been to both the USA and Canada, this was as a child on family holidays.
    So far in 2022, I've taken my first trip to Sub Saharan Africa, visiting both Kenya and Tanzania, before heading to the Middle East, stopping in Dubai and Lebanon. Europe followed, covering both the Greek and Turkish sides of Cyprus, and afterwards going back to Italy for the second time to cover Milan and Sicily. In the summer I visited the Caribbean for the first time, spending over a month in the Dominican Republic, before stopping in Belgium on my way home.
    After shooting some videos in Taiwan, I made my way to the Philippines for the second time.

    If you want to explore another fascinating yet troubling side of Morocco, visit the cities still under Spanish colonial occupation, like Ceuta and Melilla, where thousands of African men try to cross the border to get into the EU (and some die in the process). More absurdly, go to look at the surreal Spanish outposts like Penon de Velez de la Gomera, Penon de Alhucemas, etc. You can't get into them but you can see them easily from Morocco, lone rocks claimed by Spain and under heavy military occupation, just off the Moroccan coast. The former is connected to the mainland by a sandy isthmus just a few feet wide.

    • @goostrey4210
      @goostrey4210 Год назад +1

      In a similar way, although I have never been, it would be interesting to explore the Western Sahara region (and, for that matter, Ifni). Both were Spanish possessions invaded by Morocco in the 60s and 70s (not unproblematically). My understanding is that Ifni is now a surfing town but Western Sahara is still in contention and has a large Moroccan military presence and a long sand wall to try to separate areas controlled by Rabat from those under Sarhawi control.

    Jason, the reason why mosques in Morocco don't admit non-Muslims in their Mosques goes back to the time when the French colonized Morocco and the French authorities themselves decided to deny non-Muslims access to the mosques. After independence, the Moroccans themselves liked that decree and it was maintained. The only mosque were non-Muslims are allowed is in the fancy Hassan II mosque in Casablanca.

      @@AdamAzzr I have no problem with respecting customs and traditions of the country where I travel in, but as a lover of architecture it's sad that I can not visit several beautiful mosques in Morocco like the Koutoubia in Marrakech and the al-Karaouine in Fez who are absolutely the highlights of mosques in the Moroccan Imperial cities. Many mosques around the world are open to non-Muslims and in nearly 99,99% of the cases we as non-Muslims visitors we respect the rules and tranquility in sacred places. Of course you always have stupid ignorant tourists but that's a very small minority.

      Exactly, that's what I mean, we opened the country for tourism instead of closing it like many other islamic countries for example.
      There is nothing wrong with à non muslim visiting our mosques, espacially when our type of mosques is unique and very different than the turkish mosques that are seen in most of muslim countries.
      You don't need to be a muslim to admire a mosque, also I don't have to be Christian (I'm a muslim) and admire the magnificent baroque, renaissance and gothic churches.

    I went inside Koutoubia as a non-muslim. I got lucky. When I arrived the prayer was already over, people left the mosque and we could "sneak in"
