  • We have always been enthusiast about innovative safety equipment that can be used by sea kayakers. That equipment must take as less place as possible, must be waterproof and preferably floatable. Above all it must be effective. So, let’s have a look at the new model ODEO flare. We’ve been sharing feed-back with the company that makes this electronical flare, DANIAMANT, on a regular base. We’ve been carrying the previous model (Mk3) for years, strapped to the back of our PFD. It’s has been abused and put to the test in the most hostile environment, the sea! If you want to know if something is completely waterproof, we’ll take it with us on the North Sea. Salt water eats trough almost everything. DANIAMANT has developed a new model, and that’s the one we are testing right now. It a lot smaller than its predecessor, even with the batteries it weighs almost nothing. The activation ring is new and very large so it can be operated with gloves, even when your hands are numb. It’s waterproof, there is an extra safety button so the battery compartment cannot loosen by accident. The light output is extraordinary. We did a field test to investigate the visibility. The light can be seen in total darkness and good weather at a distance of five kilometers. It can’t be mistaken for a buoy navigational light due to the SOS signal that is built in. It emits also IR which can be seen with night vision goggles. I can hear it coming; you cannot see it in bright, sunny weather? Well, if you’re life depends on it, a pyrotechnical flare is also hard to spot in these conditions. Every distress signal has it’s up and downsides, that’s for sure. But the ODEO will continue emitting its distress signal even long after you have burnt al off your traditional flares that you carry with you. The ODEO flare must be seen as an essential part of your safety equipment! To our concern, DANIAMANT has chosen the modern, innovative approach with the functional, durable ODEO flare. It’s also completely safe to operate in comparison with pyrotechnical flares. We have trust in the ODEO flare concept and we will keep testing the small flare on the long term.

      Hi Steven, We really appreciate DANIAMANT with their inventive ODEO Distress Flare. It is smaller and more powerfull than the previous model... and at the same price. Cheers!👌😊

    1. The MK3, like Rocket flares, are not very practicle during daylight hours in full sun. For this smoke flares are advisable.
    2. The benefit of rocket flares is the elevation they attain in poor sea conditions. This increases the chance of being visible over a distance.
    3. At night, unless mounted overhead, the sharp light of the MK3 will be quite irritating and potentially harmful. When using a red light for chart reading, the intensity of the glow is fairly subdued. Perhaps prolonged exposure to a harsh red glare and IR needs to be discussed more. Could it impair an individuals vision in an emergency situation after prolonged exposure to the red LED and IR?
    What is the service life of the MK3? Which components wear out over time or with use? Which components are servicable?

    It looks convincing. Good points in the description, too!
    I would expect such a device to also emit sound - exactly for those situations when, in bright light, the flare is not that visible. Or is a whistle good enough for that?

    • @Northseakayak
      @Northseakayak  Год назад +1

      We carry 2 whistles as well. The ODEO is less visible in bright sunlight indeed. But still, a normal pyrotechnical flare isn't either. We like to have several options in case of distress. We also carry a PLB and a VHF in our PFD.

    Thanks for the review. It looks much more compact than the Mk3 and I like the neoprene case - I was always worried about scratching the lens of the Mk3. Hopefully these will get SOLAS accreditation at some point too.

      Yeah, we're hoping the same... They are getting better and better, this new one is an improvement of something that was already good. Do not worry about scratches on the Mk3. Mine is full of scratches (on the back of my PFD) and hit the back deck of my kayal more than once the hard way... ;-) Thanks for commenting, cheers! Dimitri

    I've used pyros from a boat deck but realistically can't imagine holding one whilst in my boat or treading water in heavy seas. I'm close to binning flares and just going to a plb and odeo with maybe a day smoke.

      Yes, it's difficult but it seems we have options when it comes to it. The more different stuff you carry, the safer. Cheers!👌

      Hi there, thanks for commenting! I use a diving light strapped to my PFD. There isn't a specific brand marked on it, it has a normal light on one side, and a white strobe on the other. You will find it easy on the internet. Cheers, Dimitri

      @@Northseakayak Hi Dimitri. So I was searching somewhat about diving lights :) I didn't found same as you have ... they are mostly in black color - I prefer high visibility color. And what I realize is that they prefer usually lamp which is sinking rather than floating :( Of course I prefer rather floating lamp ... It looks like I didn't found clear solution yet :( mira

      Hello Manu, Yes, we still carry it with us and train with it. The flare is compact and emits a powerfull light, the pouch is slightly improved by now (plastic zipper) which is convenient to attach it somewhere on your PFD. Cheers!

    What technology does it use - if LED then what LEDs are they? Is it laser?

      Hi there, there are both standard LED's and IR LED 's in this flare. For more details, please have a look at the Daniamant website. Cheers, Dimitri 😎😊😀
