So I was front row between Page & Trey at this show. This 20 minutes of Phish was / is the single best moment of the over 100 shows I saw. Trey was enjoying this experience so much and really lost himself, to the point that I could literally see his eyes rolling back into his head, I am not joking when I say spittle was flying around as he was just so consumed with intense intention at this moment. You can tell at around 14:40 he runs out of steam and it coasts into a lull that then segues well into the mellow Makisupa. Certainly my most favorite show of all time. Thank you to the taper who captured this and whoever posted it.
From '94-'98, I swear, Fishman was some kind of monster on those drums. He's been a phenomenal drummer for every year, but those years he just seemed extra buff and in shape and just built like a compact, hyper-speed drumming machine.
My favorite part about Phish is the near endless discovery of killer jams like this. I've been going to shows since 1997 and have heard hundreds of hours of their music, but never this version of Piper until now. The build at 13:10 and subsequent machine gun Trey are some of the more badass notes I've ever heard them play. WOW!
Dude. Whoever recorded this...You did a remarkable job. Thank you for taking the time to document this. A lot of people would say it's the Ghost from this night, but to me this Piper is the perfect encapsulation of that Europe Tour. Thanks as well to the uploader. Peace
@@jonathangreene4886 I had been front row every night previous. This night I was up just above Page. This night was probably the highlight. The Christiania shows were long. Especially night 1. And they were epic, but this was next level. Especially after 7/5. Cheers!
Listening to this version is similar to flowing of emotion as the jam slowly progresses. The intensity and the frankness of Trey gave Piper a different shade of color in this superfluous jam. Hats Off...
Yeah man. That was crazy. I was running into Todd Jones everywhere in Europe. He has a very memorable face, and as soon as I saw him in Road Trip I was like, Holy Shit! That's the guy from Europe 98 who was making Bittersweet Motel.
12:36 and on is just insane. lot of notes or not the energy is absolutely blowing the roof off of that place. id pay a whole shit ton of money to have been right there watching this happen
I honestly think if I could choose to be at one single show in Phish history, it would be this one. There’s just such an intense energy that is so unique. Whether it was the tiny club, or the Bittersweet Motel cameras on stage, or the supposed weed brownies the band consumed before the show (I think that was this show anyway?). Whatever the reasons, I just can’t fathom being in that little club on that night.
+Geoff Grant I've been to plenty of shows in all the eras, but there is a distinct 'Trey' here that only surfaces occasionally in 3.0. That's just a part of maturing and growing older I think more then anything else. I'm not knocking the current Mr. Anastasio. :D
+JonG ahhhhh. Ok, I get it now. I've been going off and on since '95. The Gorge shows this year felt like a time machine. Trey looked great, the music was on point, the right amount of silliness, and a fantastic crowd. Last summer was better but damn the past two years have been good ones in the Phish world.
@@briant9130 plenty of bouncy Trey moments in 3.0 not denying that. But they are few a far between…even 6 years after I made this comment. Hope you’ve been enjoying this summer tour!
Great guitar playing...boring jam. Come on guys. Trey always says they play the best when they are listening to each other. You think Trey is using his ears in this jam? Ha. His fingers and his ego maybe. Sorry for hating, but more like Trey band. Can't even hear what anyone else is playing. Oh wait....at 14:51 it gets musical!!!!
I thought the early parts of the jam (say 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 min's into the vid) were a little too over the top / aggro. Sounded too Eddie Van Halen-esque, like a 1985 Bud Lite commercial, trying too hard. Then by like 13 - 14 -15 min's & onward, they settled down, Trey got into some innovative leads, they looked & listened to each other a lot more. But jamband music is like that. I mean, the Grateful Dead sounded pretty Amateurish at times (in between some utterly Wizardly stuff) in late 60's/early 70's, chalk it up to youth, same here (altho then the GD were still late 20's, here Phish is mid 30's), & lots & lots of Rugs lol. I gotta go back thru the archives & see if I ever saw Piper in those days - must have somewhere along the line - used to see a dozen or so shows a year. I was born 1960, saw the GD in mid 70's in high school, hooked ever since, got into the early jamband scene hanging around tapers / Wetlands / Cap Th late 80's, saw all the early jambands all the time back then, been on & off with all of them since then - Mule, Panic, Phish, Bisco, Umphrey's, etc. Still hate SCI & Flaming Lips. Also - Goose SUCKS! Lamest band ever!!!!
trey was made honorary king of the czech republic for the 2 weeks following this eruption
i was named after this song:) always gonna be one of my favourites
You win.
That's beautiful. This one is the best I've ever heard. Bless you!
my daughter too🤙🏽
Piper is a lovely name as I am sure you are too ✌️😊
We need a feature length documentary on Jon Fishman. I don't care if they make the whole shit up.

Yeah saw the same thing from our boy at the old Boston Garden NYE 94 LOL
I was right next to you and loved every minute of it. I nearly passed out from exhaustion...epic epic jam! So glad we hit those 5 incredible shows.
Just came back around to this gem. Honestly one of the best things I’ve seen on RUclips that memorializes their peak in the 90s. Namaste.
Iwats too
I'd sell my soul or that show.

I was with the bros (shout-out Ethan and Matt). Hopped into a box dead center on the 2nd level. Took both nights to the head from this box. Epic.

Trey was possessed in the 90s! Man was insane!! Would have loved to be at this show!
I remember when Trey used to dance around like that a lot. Especially during heavy jams...
You know they got this filmed in high quality from the bittersweet motel filming, i would like to see this get an official video release

@@kevinmurtagh4996 I do. I don’t know where Jones came from. I think he was a Tigers pitcher. Nice!

Trey must've been coked up on this night. He went OFF.
He’s definitely on something
"I think you were playing a lot of notes."
Joe Trey was playing a lot of notes
"You always say that, man."

Whenever Trey shakes his head back and forth it reminds me of the old days
However I’ve never seen him quite so jumping around like during this song. Amazing
Trey is clearly on fire, but don't discount Mike in this one. Epic bass runs throughout. Commence salivating.
well...guess I have to download Prague again. thanks for uploading! this Piper RIIIIIPS
This is why my daughter will be named piper
superb.
Best summer ever...
Absolutely RIPPING. Any other suggestions they’re playing at this level? I’ve been focused on late 90s (island tour)
He's pulling of insane jamming and fixing his glasses at the same time. Somebody get this guy an optometrist.
Wow, and I thought the Ghost from this night was good! This is why, when you look in the jampedia under Guitar God, Trey's picture pops up.
16:29 -- "What song are they playing again?"
Is that Todd Philips on stage with the camera? Trey is coming in this jam like Arnold when he lifts and flexes, for sure.
2020 still rocking this hard
astronomical jams from this show
Trey basically cheesing for the camera on stage.
10:55 for transcription purposes
7:50ish. Sweet!!
someone dosed the camera for sure.
@arthurrimbaud1944 just like every other jam post 97... also love that effect trey starts rocking around 10:21
Cameras on stage @12:00...was that footage for "Bittersweet Motel?"
Shout out to those who remember the tape cutting off at around the 10:30 to 10:40 mark.
Jam made my nose runny... I need to poop.
Crosseyed and Painless tease around 9:25?
Epic
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Still can’t get enough of this 4 years later. Fuckin machine gun Trey 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
oh my god.
man miss this style of trey's punk ass guitar jedi swagger
6:00 seriously how does treys neck do that?
Who owns the onstage camera footage?!
4:50 What the heck happened to this cameraman's footage?
Perhaps it was for the movie Bittersweet Motel? Look it up on here if you’ve never seen it.
wicked jam!
+sweetpeajunglebean Looks like me in your picture. Who is that?
@z3nster
Little River Band - "Lady"
Miss this bouncy and energized Trey. Happy to be here and ready to explore. Maybe he comes back to us someday. Sans the drugs.
um, you realize this video is from '98, right?? Trey is doing just fine right now, bouncing and everything. go to a show.

Sad comment. Off the top of my head the Hartford double tweezer. But so many others. You don't know what you don't know.
